Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, 18, on her graduation day from Harrison Central High School in Gulf Port, Miss. Dedeaux was one of 10 people killed in the Bourbon Street attack on New Year's Day in New Orleans, her family confirms.
The 18-year-old from Gulfport, Mississippi, was supposed to start a nursing program at Blue Cliff College on Jan. 13, following in the footsteps of her mother, who is also a nurse.
But Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux was killed when hit by a pickup truck after coming to New Orleans to celebrate the New Year with her cousin and a friend, according to the people she was with.
Known by the nickname "Biscuit" by friends and Cheyenne by family, friend Zion Parsons said Dedeaux "was never down, or grumpy. He called her "a little ball of sunshine" who always tried to stay positive, cheering friends if she detected an attitude or negative energy.
"You know those kinds of people where you can’t find a reason to dislike them? She was one of those people," Parsons said.
Her mom, Melissa Dedeaux, said her daughter had "carloads" of friends and was always getting together with them. She was the third oldest of six children
"I just want to see my baby," Dedeaux, 40, wept. "She was the sweetest person. She would give you anything, anything."

Reggie Hunter was a warehouse manager and a father of two from Baton Rouge who decided to head to Bourbon Street on a whim Tuesday, said Shirell Jackson, a cousin.
He and another cousin were both hit by the truck. Hunter died from his injuries, and his cousin is hospitalized with extensive internal injuries.
Hunter leaves behind two sons. He took pride in his 12-year-old son's academic accomplishments in the STEM field and in his 18-month old son. He loved working out at the gym with a group of family members and friends.
She and other family members never expected that gathering to be their last Christmas with Hunter.
"You are praying for a prosperous year in 2025," Jackson said. "And never do you think this is the news you are going to get."
A Lafayette native and former football player died late Wednesday morning after suffering catastrophic injuries from the attack.
Tiger Bech, 28, was hit by the suspect's truck, according to Kim Broussard, the athletic director at St. Thomas More Catholic High School, where Bech played football before going on to play for Princeton University.
He graduated from Princeton in 2021 with a degree in finance and worked as a trader at a New York brokerage firm, according to Broussard. He was in New Orleans for the holidays.
Bech was kept on life support until his family could arrive.
He earned all-state honors while at STM and was a member of the All-Acadiana Regional and All-District First Team as a senior.
Bech is the older brother of former LSU player Jack Bech
