I don't think so. They were steel columns as described in this article.
The project to remove and replace the bollards along about eight blocks of bustling Bourbon Street, from St. Ann Street to Canal Street, began Nov. 18, city documents show. Temporary asphalt patches were installed in the spots where the steel columns were removed, according to the documents.

Oh so they seem to be permanent barriers then like Target or Walmart might have to prevent cars from hitting the front of the store?

I wasn't sure if cars were ever allowed down those streets that's why I was picturing something that could be removed to allow traffic when it was okay.

It's unfortunate this happened, but I think this would have happened no matter what barrier was there. It seems like this was planned so if it wasn't a truck driving down I'm sure he would have done something else.. we know he had IEDs also. I know there are always things that we could have or should have or would have done AFTER the fact and I hope they assess this well and figure out the failures.. but to really prevent these things, we have to get better at stopping the person before they are in a truck headed for a closed off street.

Where did he buy these IED parts? What was he doing online? How did he get to this point? Surely he was showing signs of something going wrong.. he was in financial trouble.. where did he get money for this attack? Who funded it?

"At the time of the New Year’s Eve attack on Bourbon Street, New Orleans was in the process of upgrading its bollard system, which are metal poles embedded in the roadway that block vehicle access. While the upgraded bollards are being installed, the city utilized temporary barriers in their stead on New Year’s Eve."

"In addition to the bollard system, the city also has mechanical barricades that lift to block traffic at the entrance of Bourbon Street along Canal Street. But [police chief] Kirkpatrick said those barriers, which she referred to as wedges, had malfunction issues and were at risk of getting stuck, preventing emergency vehicles from accessing the street. The police department determined the old bollards to be inefficient because they did not operate in the way they were intended to"

"The City of New Orleans began construction on the Bourbon Street bollard replacement project in November 2024, according to its website. The project will replace the old bollard system with new removable stainless-steel bollards"

As for the funding, this really wouldn't have cost much at all. These don't sound like sophisticated devices by any means, and the materials wouldn't cost much. Truck rental, stay at an AirBnB, etc; not much either.

This was a poor man's terrorist attack, which can obviously be just as deadly as something more sophisticated.

<modsnip: Channel2 is not an approved source>

The deceased attacker was wearing body armor, two sources familiar with the investigation told CBS News.
A long gun "with a suppressive device" on it that acted as a silencer was recovered from the scene, law enforcement sources said.
Rbm.

"Suppressive device", aka silencer or suppressor --which I've been told are two different things ?
One (suppressor) muffles the sound but not entirely; while the other (silencer) makes it difficult to tell where the shots are coming from ?

Found a pic. of the bollards they may have been using :

They could stop a car, would they stop a truck at full speed ?
The screws to hold them in place don't look very heavy.

What I'd like to know is if the perp knew they were temp. removed ?
Or it would've been a long drive for nothing.
Not feeling bad that he no longer walks amongst us !
Imo.

What a devastating start to 2025…as the terrorists planned IMO.

When I saw that lorry driven into crowds in Nice a few years back I thought this was going to be a popular lone wolf modus operandi and so difficult to detect or prevent - devastating the bollards were temporary measures at this time. It’s essential large public spaces are protected mechanically from vehicles choosing to replicate these attacks and particularly at this time of year with festivities targeted.

Absolutely devastating, poor families and people involved.

MOO but I believe ISIS in particular often target recent converts to Islam as they don’t have in depth knowledge or mainstream community calibration and moreover those with criminal pasts or mental health conditions make good “lone wolves”.

It sounds like nothing that sturdy was in place on NYE:

"Jimmy Cothran, a New Orleans resident of 15 years who was at the scene during the horrific mass casualty event, says the city’s steel mechanical barricades were not up and in position prior to the vehicle attack. “They had the flimsy orange ones that you could just push over with your finger." It would depend on the weight and speed of the vehicle. As far as the fasteners are concerned, it depends on their material, design, length and diameter - and what kind of material they're fastened to. Concrete would have the greatest pull out resistance. Longer fasteners could have been purchased. JMO

The people on surveillance video who investigators thought might have been planting bombs have been ruled out as suspects. That video evidence was the basis for officials saying he didn’t act alone

Thank you !

I was looking for that statement from the CNN reporter's interview and couldn't find it.

Ok, I found this dubious from the beginning. These guys are always working alone when we have the set of facts we have here. Standard lone wolf attacker in every way.

And that Tesla Vegas explosion is going to be unrelated too.

I am hopeful this was a lone wolf -- because then more attacks aren't coming in a coordinated plan all over the country.
Need a little better news.
One lone vicious monster is bad enough !

They were probably people planting coolers of drinks so they didn't have to buy booze. Dropped them off and hid them to come back to later. Relieved that they have been ruled out. All JMO

With the death toll climbing to 15 people and having read that the suspect was wearing body armor I'm wondering if some of the casualties were the result of friendly fire. I hate to think that but with a crowd of that size it could be possible. :(

CNN Live: John Miller

Made a series of voice recordings on video as he drove from Texas to Louisiana. Talked about turmoil in family, divorce, discusses getting his family together for celebration so he could kill all of them. Over time, based on dreams of joining ISIS, changed plan to carry out attack in New Orleans.

Last will and testament where he divides up what little money he has left.

Gee ... what a nice guy.
I do feel badly for the members his family --I'm assuming they knew nothing about his nefarious plans, since it sounds like he was deeply estranged -- the exes and kids if he has them, and extended family.
He's hurt them as well.
Smh.
