I was just checking to see what security measures there were for the Tournament of Roses parade here in LA (Pasadena), that takes place every Jan. 1 and which always attracts massive crowds.
I found this. Don't know why it's dated Jan 3 though, but they have this barriers plan in place every year. Someone tried to drive through, and was unable. Also, people are seriously screened for entry into the venue.
eta...dated Jan. 2024, no wonder

Simply negligent. Mardi Gras is every year. Sugar Bowl is every year. NYE is every year. SuperBowl coming up this year.
Just no excuse to not prioritize fixing their stupid barriers or at the very least properly blocking off the streets with sanitation trucks or tractor-trailers, or other impassible road blocks.
I’m not sure about this. These roads have to balance the need for emergency vehicle traffic as well. This isn’t an area where vehicles never travel that can be blocked off with permanent obstructions.

I think a parade route is very different than Bourban Street though.

The only part of this that *might* begin to raise red flags for purchasing a gun would be the history of a restraining order. None of the other “life events” would even remotely qualify from a legal perspective. I also question if he purchased them vs stealing them or obtaining them illegally some other way.

"Jabbar was carrying a Glock and a .308 rifle – equipped with optics and a suppressor – that had been reported stolen in New Jersey"

What failures would HS have? Would it not be more failures with the State of Texas or local Texas police?
What did the terrorist do that the state of Texas missed or should’ve caught? I am confused about placing blame on Texas police.

Yes. We do know he was home-grown, born in Beaumont, Texas. HS does not investigate radicalization.

If these attacks intensify ... they may need to start doing so.
Even if it's just 'lone wolves' acting on behalf of someone's orders, they could do a lot of damage !

He could have purchased it in Houston. (Private sale etc)
Stolen guns end up all over the place. Obviously, he didn't purchase it from a licensed firearms dealer.

I'm rethinking my vacation to New Orleans in May.
i have a high school friend of 50 years who has been trying to get a job in New England to be able to leave NOLA- his wife relocated a year or more ago. Tonight he told me he is giving notice at work and leaving for Maine. I told him it will all work out.

Maybe this tragedy will be a wake up call. The corruption is as old as Huey P. Long. I experienced it in various ways, on boards/fundraisers, school boards, elections, etc. It defies logic that things don’t change and improve.

“In a kleptocracy, corrupt politicians enrich themselves secretly outside the rule of law, through kickbacks, bribes, and special favors from lobbyists and corporations, or they simply direct state funds to themselves and their associates”

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) wrote a letter to Chairman-elect Rand Paul of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, demanding the Biden Administration be held accountable following a New Year’s Eve terrorist-linked attack on New Orleans’ famed Bourbon Street.
Senator Hawley wrote, “They must give a full account of this attack and any departmental failures related to the incident.”

What failures would HS have? Would it not be more failures with the State of Texas or local Texas police?
While I think Hawley's rant is just political grandstanding, it would be part of HS job to detect threats. That does not necessarily mean there were any failures if there was nothing to detect.

<modsnip: Gun control discussion is off limits>

Given this guy had financial troubles, recent marital break down and restraining orders, had converted to Islam (representing some big life events)…were these not somehow flags that should have been on the system somewhere somehow when he owns or purchases an assault rifle?

It appears the truck he used killed more people so far. imo How do you keep a vehicle away from a person that wants death and destruction.

As for the funding, this really wouldn't have cost much at all. These don't sound like sophisticated devices by any means, and the materials wouldn't cost much. Truck rental, stay at an AirBnB, etc; not much either.

This was a poor man's terrorist attack, which can obviously be just as deadly as something more sophisticated.
it's amazing that someone has no money to pay their bills but has money to commit a terror attack. That alone hints that other resources are likely involved.

Law enforcement is waiting on federal authorization to search a Houston home they believe is connected to the suspected New Orleans attacker, a spokesperson with FBI Houston told reporters.

Authorities are “hours and hours” away from being able to enter the home, the spokesperson said, adding they have been clearing the neighborhood and escorting people away from the area.

No one in the area has been arrested in relation to the ongoing investigation, the official said.

Why "hours and hours" away? Wouldn't getting this approval (I'm assuming a judge to approve the search warrant?) be an absolute top priority right now?

I don't know the details of the restraining order against Jabbar but in many jurisdictions TROs are automatically placed on both parties when a divorce is filed. So simply having a TRO would not indicate any kind of threat. Also, a TRO is essentially an ex-parte action based solely on one party's claims. It is not a conviction so it would not be grounds for failing a federal background check.

He's a bomber, even if he never got the chance to press the button. It's not as simple as just the paperwork, they are evacuating absolutely everyone in a certain radius. Bombers often wire their homes when they embark on these kinds of assaults, knowing LE will show up at their homes. It's a secondary potential massacre site.

And even if he didn't do that, some bombers are cavalier and boneheaded with their bomb making supplies and spare devices. It could all go off if they touch the wrong things in there.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, bombers and poisoners are the worst. They're both indiscriminate, cruel, cold blooded and fuelled by spite.

MOO

My thought was that they are not waiting for permission. They are waiting until they can safely evacuate all the neighbors. I'm not sure why that would take hours though.

I think the exact answer is: Yes, but perhaps not- then again, maybe.

At one time, it was near impossible to flag, and then deny a weapon's purchase based on anything less than a Court order (Virginia Tech rampage shooter).

The ability to flag potential gun purchases may of gotten easier now. Its possible that his ability to purchase weapons had been curtailed.

But.... as @Friday Fan stated, background checks are not required in many states for private purchases. So, his record could be flying a series of high red flags that would never have been seen by a vendor involved in a private sale.

There’s just got to be some sort of hiccup. I imagine this will all have to be done very carefully too, perhaps first sending in a robot or something.
