Twitter

MSP Fusion Center has current updated tally of responses to fires/explosions/investigations of gas odor at 70. Spread over wide swath of south
#Lawrence
and northern part of
#NorthAndover
with several others across Merrimack River in north Lawrence.

The number is up to 70, but that includes reports of gas odor, too, not necessarily fire or explosion.

oh great smelling gas

maybe the smelling gas is a mistake like in panic?

I am sorry I have a sense humor - they are warning people without power not to use candles

help us all

OMG
The live news is mentioning that they turned off the electric now to 3 whole communities as a safety precaution. So even though that is probably the right thing to do it now compounds the problem. There is now a total blackout in these 3 huge communities.

Andover
North Andover
Lawrence

There are thousands of people now without power as it is getting dark outside. The highways around there are at a standstill.

OMG. This is a major disaster. Caused by human error. May have been a single worker making a mistake. Incredible !

Over 39 homes involved in the fires or explosions and now thousands without power as it gets dark. WOW

Watch WBZ Live - CBS Channel 4 « CBS Boston
Well, the system should be set up so a single person can't make a mistake like that, though I'm not a gas/utility expert (though I did once work for a power company....in the office!).

I'm going to be very interested in what is determined to be the cause, especially since I live in an older city with infrastructure that is probably in need of an upgrade 40 years ago.

Total population of Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover is about 150,000.

I really, REALLY hope that they aren't going to find that someone did this on purpose. :/ Is that even possible?
I don't know if it's possible, but when I heard "explosion" and "Boston," my first thought wasn't an accident (though that was before seeing about the upgrade work).

I hope it was an accident.

We are going to have to prepare for people that passed cause they could not be transported

how can you do that when houses keep blowing up all over the place

Anyone know the time frame between first one and last known one

its strange we all do a lot of strange stuff together but this is really hard to comprehend

trying to figure out why so widespread as opposed to a lot in one area

the only thing I am coming back with is like a huge pressure surge and old hookups gave loose cause if it was a fire actually in the line wouldnt it be more in a row ??

why is it so scattered and widespread ?

Re BBM

Yes
If this is like I expect and it ends up because of extreme pressure getting in the gas lines to the homes then it makes sense why its scattered about the city. Because like you mention the older homes with older gas fittings and older appliances may give way where the newer homes with better built gas lines and gas fittings may have stood up to the extreme pressure.

The fires would be caused by an ignition source and is why some fires probably started right away by pilot lights where some other homes that didnt have an ignition source but still had a blown gas line would build up gas in the home until something caused a spark and then blew up the home. Something as simple as a phone ringing or a doorbell or the A/C kicking on cold cause a spark and boom.

I suspect there are lots more homes that are filled with gas and need to vented carefully by opening all the windows and getting the gas out. There could be many homes with gas in the home and they are like a time bomb waiting to go off unless they get vented.

No announced fatalities, at least. Presser was announced for 7 ET but not yet.

State Police said it was “far too early to speculate” on the cause, and a “joint investigation will be conducted when situation is stabilized.” (Boston Globe)

I'm just seeing this.....what on earth !!!
If this catastrophe is due to human error.....don't they have safety protocols in place when upgrading and dealing with something as dangerous as gas?

Long time ago a house blew up in mid winter in Montreal where I lived. Whole family perished. Still haunts me and has resulted in my fear of gas.
But here.....70 houses ????? I'm incredulous.

Please let there be no loss of life...including pets.

I am truly having a hard time understanding how one comes to the conclusion when it is ok to start up three separate communities

think about it for a sec

whose job is that gonna be ?

Only news in my part was a huge drug bust 5 blocks away from us at 4:30 a.m. this morning. I am thankful. This is so tragic.
