Yes it is I just wish it was the black boxes so we could find out how this tragedy happened.

Me too! After all this time, would there still be anything left on the black box?
IIRC, data is only stored for 30 days...

The locator signal from the flight data recorders so they can be found only lasts up to 30 days as the battery dies. But data can be recovered from the boxes after long periods underwater provided they are not badly damaged. In the 2009 Air France flight 447 crash from Brasil the flight data recorders were located from a depth of 10,000 feet and the data successfully recovered two years after the crash. But they knew roughly where 447 crashed. It is going to take a miracle to find out where MH370 went down and then where the boxes are.

This article provides useful information about the recorders http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...veals-secrets-device-solve-MH370-mystery.html

Thanks for the info!
For some reason, I think I knew this...but it's been so long since we discussed the FDR/black boxes.

No problem. Yes it has unfortunately been a long time since they were discussed I think once we knew the locator signal had definitely died all hope was lost of finding the recorders.

I would be interested to know how long flight data recorder information can remain underwater and still be successfully downloaded provided the recorders aren't damaged.

An object found on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion earlier this month is "unlikely" have come from missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, investigators search for the jet said Wednesday.

The 8-by-15-inch piece of ocean debris was found March 3 by Johnny Begue.

Would have been nice if they included the photo since there have been a few pieces found. It would be this one which to me looked like it came from a boat.

2nd piece found at La Reunion Island by the same person that found the 1st piece.

Found a decent video that's about the piece from Cape of Good Hope that says "no step". The video says it's possible marine life was washed off of the part if it was sitting on the beach. They also say that the rip pattern suggests a violent impact with the water but that they expect a flimsy piece like that to rip off 1st.

Malaysian authorities have reiterated that photographic evidence suggests a piece of debris discovered off Eastern Africa likely came from a Boeing 777.

So now a piece of a Rolls Royce aircraft engine has been found on a beach in South Africa. Malaysia is sending a team to retrieve it.

Wow!

From your link -
Mr Kruger described the object as being about 70cm by 70cm, “with chunks gone from the side”. The white surface, with the partial logo, has peeled away to reveal a dark metallic grey covering.

That is a good sized piece. 70cm is about 2.3 ft.

Also,
Malaysia said it would send a team to retrieve the object, which was found near Mossel Bay, a town of about 60,000 in Western Cape province on the country’s southern coast.

Mossel Bay beach is at the bottom of Africa between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.

Air Crash Investigation was on TV last night. It was the one about the Ethiopian flight that was hijacked by 3 ex-prisoners who wanted to come to Australia. They ran out of fuel and the pilot tried to glide the plane down near some islands in fairly shallow water, so about 1/3 of the people survived, thanks to the tourists and islanders who rushed out to save them.
That plane broke into 3 main parts - cockpit, middle, tail (as did the plane that was shot down over the Ukraine) - with other smaller pieces that also broke off during impact.
It made me think of MH370.

MH370: Analysis confirms Mozambique debris 'almost certainly' from missing aircraft

http://www.9news.com.au/world/2016/03/24/12/37/mozambique-debris-almost-certainly-from-mh370

That didn't take long to confirm that these two pieces are from MH370.

Here's another article describing some of the tests they performed on the debris.
Also, in this article, an acknowledgement of the new debris and a problem associated with a search of the South African area for more possible debris.

Liow, Malaysia's transport minister, said there is a possibility it came from an inlet cowling of an aircraft engine. Authorities will examine the part to see if it, too, came from Flight 370.

Liow said Malaysia is awaiting approval from South African authorities to comb the area for more possible debris. If approved, a Malaysian team will be sent to conduct the search along the coast of South Africa and Mozambique, Liow said.

I guess all this debris being found is good news!
The crash site is probably very close to where this debris keeps washing up...
IMO, searches need to be done in this area!

Really hope they are close to finding the plane. The families need answers now more then ever!

Makes me wonder if they need to move the search area

I wonder if they have searched anywhere else other than the main "ping" area? Did the other potential sightings get followed up? We can dismiss the South China Sea theory as it's nigh on impossible that debris would have got from A to B without being seen in Malaysia/Indo first.

I'm pretty shocked the crash site still hasn't been found, 2 years later. Mindblowing really!

I find this statement in an article today and wonder if the number of debris is in error-

https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/335926

So far, six pieces of aircraft debris have been found and are believed to be linked to MH370

Can anyone help fill in my list? -
1 - flaperon found on LaReunion
2 - no step piece found at Mozambique
3 - teenage boy carried home piece from Mozambique
4 - Rolls Royce engine piece found at Mossel Bay South Africa
5 -
6 -

ETA -
Here's another link mentioning six pieces.
I can't tell from this writing if there was a second piece found in South Africa or not.
