The black boxes normally emit a frequency of 37.5 kilohertz, and the signals picked up by the Ocean Shield were both 33.3 kilohertz, U.S. Navy Capt. Mark Matthews said.

Houston said the frequency heard was considered "quite credible" by the manufacturer, and noted that the frequency from the Air France jet that crashed several years ago was 34 kilohertz. The age of the batteries and the water pressure in the deep ocean can affect the transmission level, he said.

A month into the search for the jet, estimates compiled by Reuters show that at least $44 million has already been spent on the deployment of military ships and aircraft in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea by Australia, China, the United States and Vietnam.

Abbott has hinted that Australia, which has so far borne the brunt of the expense, may at some point be sending out invoices.

If they can't pick up the ping again, they have some big decisions to make. They are probably studying the data of the pings, upside down and inside out, to determine how legit it is. They have to decide how feasible it is to continue dragging their sorry assets through that area of the South Indian Ocean.


Update: This post can be disregarded. I have just been dying to use the phrase "dragging their sorry assets through the water" after last night and all the talk about "getting assets in the water".

We have a very nice synchronicity happening ATM...

At the point where everything went haywire and the plane diverted from its route to Beijing, this was at 103degrees East according to the navigation waypoints (IGARI).
Want to guess where the 'Ocean Shield' is right now? She is at 103degrees East - on the same celestial longitude!!!

Well per experts on CNN last night and also the press conference, it could take months for the ocean-floor camera-wearing thing-y (forgot the name of it) to scour the ocean floor in that area and find the black boxes, or for that matter even the wreckage. That is, if they are even in the right place....yikes. That would be really horrible if they are in the wrong place all along.

They have a huge task ahead of them, any way we look at it.

KUALA LUMPUR: While information at hand does not suggest passenger involvement in the disappearance of a Malaysian airliner, the status of the probe can be revised upon receipt of fresh input, said acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.
He said there was nothing conclusive at the moment regarding the investigation of the passengers and crew of the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight, MH370.
“We wish to reiterate that investigation is ongoing. The investigation has intensified in many areas with regard to the pilot, co-pilot and (other) crew members,” he told reporters after attending a meeting of the Assets Deployment Committee pertaining to search and recovery.

I would think two things would be of concern for me. One, why was this flight headed towards Australia and two, what was in that cargo hold? jmo

If I am not mistaken all that has been said about the computer/simulator was that what was deleted was nothing concerning. They haven't said if they did/didn't find something else, did they?

Yes. That was said.
But then a few days ago...CNN mentioned that there may have been something suspicious found but they never reported on it again.

At this point, IMO, cause will never be determined unless plane and/or one or both boxes is found. While of course investigation should be on-going, I doubt anything can be proved without the plane data itself. I hate to think, if not found, that some people will remain as potential suspects forever.

I think there is little doubt they found the black boxes. Which gives them the desperately needed narrow location, it is a pity they couldn't get a signal on the 3rd pass but imo its miraculous they got the other two sets of signals right at the end of their battery life.

It will be a long and frustrating look see but we are already miles ahead of where we were a week ago. They got very lucky and who knows luck may come into play again. At least to find the wreckage around the black boxes.

I am not so sure people realize how incredible the happenings since saturday are. Bar the actual photograph, all points to having found a tiny ping in the middle of a vast ocean miles away from where anyone imagined the plane would go down when it first happened.

They can't triangulate without the 3rd pass but they certainly can use the two different locations and the timing of the signals (2 hours/13 mins) to help them.

Can you imagine if they were one day later? we would still be scratching behinds with nothing to go on. I am excited. Even though answers won't come in for a while at least we know where to look now.

How long will they and physically can they keep up this intensity?

And financially, this is costing a lot of money. Not that it is not worth it, but, this can't on forever, can it?

As I said above, we have a lot more now. The Australians are clearly as certain as they can be that ocean shield found the boxes and imo they were looking around there based on further info too to even be trailing that locator where they were.

Don't give up, this isn't the same as the satellite images, these frequencies are unique.

Wow! Thanks for that. That is indeed interesting. They are literally on the spot of where MH370 had it's last communication, except way down on the southern arc?

Then they're going to have to reassess." That reassessment could lead officials to begin using side-scanning sonar, a painstaking process of searching the depths for signs of the missing airliner.

"I think we're in a very critical stage of the search, and some big decisions are going to have to be made in the next week or so," Goelz said.
