VOX' Joseph Stromberg has done some calculations:
http://www.vox.com/2014/7/18/591519...tm_campaign=vox&utm_content=article-share-top

There's a particularly sobering statistic that emphasizes the magnitude of this tragedy: with the reported death count now including 189 passengers from the Netherlands, the MH17 crash has claimed the lives of a greater share of the country's population than the September 11th attacks did in the US.

BBM

The people lost onboard MH17 represent approximately .0011 percent of the total Dutch population of 16.8 million.
Many more Americans were killed in the 9/11 attacks — 2,624 in total — but because the US population is so much larger (it was roughly 285 million in 2001), the death toll represented .0009 percent of the overall population.

President George Bush after 9/11
"I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon."

Dutch PM Mark Rutte:
"Much is unclear, an investigation should take place on a totally objective way ."

Hear, hear! Putin's lapdog repeating what His Master's Voice has just told him. Because this is Putin's text, if you had not noticed.
Maybe it is just as well that this total wimp is completely absent from the international discussion. He's the country's worst PM since whichever war you choose.
There is a lot of anger about him. A lot.

KIEV, Ukraine (CNN) -
Malaysia Airlines will give an initial cash payment of $5,000, per passenger, to Flight 17 passengers' next of kin for "initial expenses," Malaysia Airlines Senior Vice President Huib Gorder told reporters Friday at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.

The airline also intends to fly the passengers' relatives to Ukraine "at the appropriate moment," Gorder said.

An analysis of previous crashes shows that victims' relatives need to go to the crash sites, he said. "There is an emotional need to do so. That is a fact of life," he said...

Air France, Lufthansa and other airlines all said they are rerouting their flights as of yesterday. On flight tracker at the last recorded time of MH17 there were a lot of planes in that corridor. Some people are mixing up the Crimea no fly zone and the Eastern one in this case. This was an open highway to all commercial traffic, IOCAO had not closed it. It was not considered to be the dangerous area, in fact due to bad weather the pilot was actually flying even farther north than the planned highway and should have been even safer.

I cannot blame MH, i blame IOCAO (sic) and others in charge of making safe flight corridors and maintaining them.

No. Flying further North is what brought the plane into the rebel territory near Donetsk. Look at the map.

'One of the corpses fell through the rickety roof of Irina Tipunova’s house in this sleepy village...

“There was a howling noise and everything started to rattle. Then objects started falling out of the sky,” the 65-year-old pensioner said...

“And then I heard a roar and she landed in the kitchen, the roof was broken,” she said, showing the gaping hole made by the body when it came through the ceiling of the kitchen in an extension to the house.

The dead woman’s naked body was still lying inside the house, next to a bed.'

Villagers (as is usual I believe) have been told to leave bodies where they are until investigators can collect them. There were reports like this about the Lockerbie bombing in Scotland too. One poor woman spent three days having to step over a body outside her front door. A local farmer was so moved by an infant's body out on a hill, he picked it up in a lamb sack and took it to police.

Mr Bartsch said that while bodies like the International Air Transport Association issued advisories and warnings from time to time, incidents like MH17 “really hit home that it is up to individual airlines to continually monitor and assess the risk on a daily basis”.

Ultimately it was up to the airlines themselves to determine whether potential hazards on their routes were within “an acceptable level of safety”, he said.

Mr Bartsch said there had been instances, such as a volcano eruption in Chile, when Australian airlines had chosen not to fly even though the airspace was declared safe by authorities.

“You can use the analogy of a policeman can’t be there to tell you when to cross the road and when not to,” he said. “It is up to the individual, in the case of airlines, to make that assessment.”

It is so difficult to read the reports. Oh my gosh, the horror for thousands....

Wow. I always had the impression Russia Today wasn't exactly an 'independent' media org. Look at these tweets. One of their presenters resigned because of the MH17.

https://mobile.twitter.com/Sara__Firth

This totally confirms something my partner told me yesterday. A client of his who is a Russian expat told him that the Russian public are being fed nothing but propaganda regarding the conflict between Ukraine and the pro-Russian separatists. She told my partner that the majority of the Russian people endorse Putin's support of the separatist rebels because, in part, they're being lied to by the government controlled media.

An interesting tweet by Sally Firth:

@Polly_Boiko @ukTanos Lies hun. We do work for Putin. We are asked on a daily basis if not to totally ignore then to obscure the truth

https://mobile.twitter.com/Sara__Firth?p=s

I admire Sally Firth for her integrity in resigning.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...ia-plane-ukraine-debris-field-scene/12827931/

In some areas of this field, near the small town of Gravobo in a remote eastern Ukraine farming region close to the Russian border, backpacks and other carry-on luggage were grouped together. It was clear that looters had already opened and rifled through some of them. How many personal items were taken, no one could say

So sad evil people Looting, all those items should go back to family members.

Thank you for this; I didn't know she'd resigned and agree with you. I was watching RT yesterday, simply because they had more journalists on scene, but the bias was painfully obvious and I had to switch back. There may be bias in Western media but it is more subtle for the most part.

Just watching the Russian Ambassador talking in the UN, trying to blame Ukraine for everything. :banghead:

CNN awaiting President Obama news conference re: Malaysian airline incident and crisis in Ukraine.

  • #718
Did anyone else just see the statement of the Russian Ambassador at the UN?

I am so angry I can barely type.

Not one word of regret as far as I saw.

Apparently the shooting down of the 'plane was 100% Ukraine's fault because of their air traffic control. This was followed by a 15 minute list of statistics, accusations and complaints about what the elected government of Ukraine has done in the rebel held areas and how it was no wonder that the poor downtrodden masses might resort to violence.

Dutch-French photographer Pierre Crom is at the locatrion of the crash

Pierre Crom ‏@PierreCrom 15 min.

Rebels keep #OSCE observers 500 m away from main #MH17 crash site #ukrainecrash #Ukraine #donbass #donetsk

BBM

500 m is 500 metres, not miles.

Hope they brought binoculars, because it was overly optimistic to expect that the OSCE-observers would easily be allowed on site.

This sucks. Despite all the denials, the pro-Russian rebels are definitely at fault this time (previously friendlies were US gov and Ukraine gov).

So much evidence and now they are trying to delete/hide them. Most likely stole this from the Ukraine base they boasted a while back and they taught themselves how to use it or the Russian government taught them. That's why they mistaken because they didnt' know how to identify a standard commercial airline. And then they blamed the airline. WTF.
