Officers appeal to help identify woman found in the River Mersey in South Manchester

At around 11.10am on Thursday 21 March 2024, officers and emergency services were called to reports of a body in the River Mersey, close to Chorlton Water Park in Manchester.

Sadly, the body of a female was subsequently recovered from the water.

Her cause of death has not been confirmed and enquiries are still ongoing.

Officers have unfortunately not been able to identify the woman, who is described as 156cm / 5 ft 1 in height, with medium dark hair. Her approximate age and definitive ethnicity is not currently known.

She did not have any identifiable items in her pockets, or visible jewellery.

As work continues to identify the woman, officers have now released images of a lime green Primark-branded crop-top - which is believed to be the same as the one she was wearing – as they continue their efforts to reunite her with her next-of-kin.

In addition, jeans she was wearing are branded as NEW LOOK – JENNA - UK size 8 (EU 36, USA 4). She additionally had non-slip style socks.

Investigators are committed to discovering her identity and determining what led to her death.

Detective Chief Inspector Kulbir Kaur, from Greater Manchester Police, said: “Our work is ongoing to identify the woman and we hope that the description of her – and the image of the top – will help spur the memory of someone who may know her or saw her last movements.

“We are keeping an open-mind as to her cause of death and further enquiries will take place within the coming days and weeks.

“We want nothing more than to reunite this woman with her next-of-kin, so if you have any information at all, please do get in touch with us. Even if you think it is something inconsequential, it could greatly benefit our investigation.”

If you have any information, you can call GMP’s City of Manchester CID on 0161 856 6051, quoting log number 1191 of 21/03/24.

You can also call 101 or visit our website at gmp.police.uk to report information.
Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

My first thought is that, sadly, this female is possibly a student, living away from her family.

If she went into the water the previous evening (Wednesday), that's a very popular student night in the UK.

I cannot work out where a student on a night out might enter the River Mersey and end up near Chrolton Water Park, doesn't seem to go close to any university residential areas. The closest potential place seems to be Didsbury.

Of course, she may not be a student, but, still, cannot see any popular nightspots where someone might walk from. Could also be walking home from some sort of house gathering?

I also wonder how long she'd been in the water as police don't seem to be able to describe her age/ethnicity. The Primark top, however, was apparently recently on sale.

This is scaring me bc I had a friend in Manchester who's about 5'1 and has been through some stuff, haven't heard from her in a long time. Probably unlikely to be her, wishing the best for whoever knew this girl.
Have you seen the reconstruction pic cheemsg. Hopefully you have since made contact with your friend. Such a sad case.

'A facial reconstruction of a woman whose body was found in a river has been released by police more than eight months after she was discovered. The woman, wearing a lime-green Primark crop-top and New Look jeans, was found by a member of the public in the River Mersey, near Chorlton Water Park in Manchester, on March 21 but remains unidentified. On Friday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) released a facial reconstruction, created by Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University, in the hope someone might recognise her.'

The Manchester Doe is not tall enough to be this MP, but somewhat reminded of her, so noting just in case.. fwiw

She had the kind of socks on that they give people in psychiatric inpatient units. We used to call them grippy socks when I was in mental health care. I wonder if she might've been a recently discharged psychiatric patient, but you'd think someone like a medical professional would've noticed her disappearance if she was. The other clothes she's wearing are all widely available fairly cheap UK fast fashion brands, so no clues there.

I'm not familiar with the area so forgive my ignorance - does the River Mersey have suicide barriers? Is it easy to access? I read in the most recent appeals that her cause of death is still undetermined, but seeing her socks made me wonder if she'd just voluntarily discharged herself from inpatient care and decided to take her own life. Several holes in that theory, though.

Just thought I'd share my observations and thoughts. I remember hearing about this case in the news a while back. Very sad to see that she's still unidentified and that she still doesn't appear to have been reported missing after an entire year.

''When discovered, she was wearing a Primark neon green strapless corset style top, New Look branded Jenna black jeans in a size 8, and dark green anti-slip socks, of the type that are believed to be used in hospitals and care facilities, although can also be purchased in shops and online.''

'Police believe she may have entered the water in a surrounding area or region, with the River Tame and River Goyt both merging into the River Mersey.'

''The woman, who was wearing a lime-green Primark crop-top and New Look jeans, was found by a member of the public in the River Mersey, near Chorlton Water Park in Manchester, on 21 March.
She is thought to have been in the water for one or two months before she was discovered.''

Not sure about the UK but in continental europe they do not give those socks at hospitals. at least not if you brought some yourself. Those socks are popular for various exercise types such as Pilates and Yoga, too. And some use them in lieu of house slippers.

Cannot help but wonder if Jane Doe was wearing green socks and top in honour of the St Patrick's Day celebrations? speculation, imo.

But according to your post above, she was thought to have been in the water one to two months.
