OXFORD, Mich. – Prosecutors on Thursday told the jury that James Crumbley, the father of the Oxford High School shooter, had the “most glaring” opportunity to stop his son from carrying out the mass shooting.

The father is standing trial on the same crimes his wife was convicted of one month prior: four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Both of the parents were charged in connection with the four students murdered by their son on Nov. 30, 2021, at the high school.

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office is now working to convict James Crumbley, who they say was in a position to prevent the mass shooting, but failed to do so. As they attempt to prove Crumbley is guilty of involuntary manslaughter, prosecutors are focusing heavily on the fact they believe the shooting was “preventable and foreseeable” by the shooter’s parents.

“What happened inside that school was truly a nightmare come to life, but it didn’t have to. That nightmare was preventable,” Assistant Prosecutor Marc Keast Thursday during opening statements...

Pontiac — An image of an unopened cable lock for a handgun, still in its original packaging, flashed Thursday on a video screen for jurors in an Oakland County courtroom, highlighting what will likely be the crux of the trial against the father of the Oxford High School shooter.

That gun lock, along with what James Crumbley did and didn't know about his son's access to a 9mm gun and his son's mental health, will likely be the focal points in the unusual trial in Oakland County Circuit Court.

“What happened inside that school was truly a nightmare come to life. But it didn’t have to. That nightmare was preventable," Oakland County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Marc Keast said during his opening statement.

But Mariell Lehman, James Crumbley's defense attorney, said prosecutors have cherry-picked evidence to make him look negligent...

James Crumbley’s communications privileges ended for threatening messages: sheriff's office

Prosecutors alluded only vaguely to the issue Thursday in court, saying Crumbley’s communication privilege needed to be halted, but did not give a reason why or specifics. Oakland County Circuit Judge Cheryl Matthews, who is presiding over Crumbley's involuntary manslaughter trial, signed the order Thursday to revoke Crumbley’s privileges, aside from talking to his attorney and legitimate clergy members.

Day 1 of testimony in James Crumbley's trial was almost an instant replay of his wife's case, but it ended on a dramatic note, with the jury being sent home early and a visibly irritated Crumbley mouthing "no" emphatically to his lawyer.

Turned out, Crumbley was caught making threatening statements on a jailhouse telephone and in electronic messages, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office confirmed to the Free Press late Thursday, noting "his access to a phone or electronic messaging is now limited to communication with his lawyer." Authorities did not disclose the nature of the threats or toward whom they were made.

State Witness #2: Edward Wagrowski, Forensic Analysist @ the Sheriff Office, was interesting and informative. He reviewed cell phones, computer, and social media. It was emotional for him at times on the stand. He mentioned he has a 17 year old daughter, maybe that had something to do with it. He reviewed the school videos stating there were a 100 cameras.
ot: James Crumbley is tall, much taller than the jailers (irrelevant, just an obeservation)

I was wondering what all of that was about!! This certainly impacts the whole “he’s the meek and quiet one” conversation that has been happening since his wife’s trial. I know the jury won’t know what happened, but it makes me wonder if this shows that he has a temper underneath the surface there. He was emphatic during the conversation yesterday that he would not agree to their order until the judge mentioned the media.

If he takes the stand, I wonder if the prosecution would try to get him to show that temper (or maybe I watch too many crime shows, lol)

All MOO, obviously.

Did he say anything that stood out to you?

I have trouble reconciling being a passive guy and having the string of relationships he's had with partners and kids. I can't see this being passive. It doesn't magically just happen to you.
However, he might want to make it seem like he's a passive kind of guy.
Sometimes irresponsibility looks like passivity. A man who has a string of relationships and fathers children that he doesn’t care for is certainly irresponsible. JMO

WDIV and The Detroit News links below. This is how I'm following the James Crumbley trial. I've spent entirely too much time watching several trials "live" from start to finish and tend to neglect things that I should have done around the house, exercising, reading, etc. I follow updates throughout the day and catch up on posts to the discussion. If James takes the stand, I will watch his testimony "live" as I did during Jennifer's trial.

Yeah, same, I don’t have the energy to watch this trial beginning to end like I did Jennifer’s trial. It’s the same evidence pretty much, but I will watch if he testifies.

I was just thinking the same thing.

OXFORD, Mich.Prosecutors are emphasizing the fact that James Crumbley never stopped at his Oxford home in the hours leading up to the 2021 high school shooting, despite driving past it several times that day and being armed with potentially concerning information.

Through witness testimony at Crumbley’s trial this week, Oakland County prosecutors zeroed in on what the Oxford shooter’s father did and didn’t do the day of the mass school shooting. The father -- who’s on trial for involuntary manslaughter in connection with the Nov. 30, 2021, shooting -- is accused of failing to take steps that could’ve prevented the massacre, including on the day of the actual shooting.

Prosecutors specifically focused on the fact that Crumbley didn’t stop home to check on the family’s firearms that day, despite concerning circumstances brought to his attention...

Editor's Note: Some of the testimony below is graphic. Discretion is advised.

Pontiac
— How James Crumbley purchased the gun used in the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School and his immediate response after the shooting were the focus of testimony Friday in Oakland County Circuit Court.

Crumbley, 47, is being tried on four counts of involuntary manslaughter for the deaths of four students his son shot in 2021 — Hana St. Juliana, 14; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; and Justin Shilling, 17. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted...

Alleged Passive Guy James Crumbley was making threatening phone calls in jail. My my. If only there were court channels and local media that could FOIA those calls so we can hear what he said. Maybe Michigan doesn’t allow that and we’ve been spoiled by Florida’s transparency when it comes to this stuff. But it’s so frustrating to hear the outlets speculate instead of gather information. The local channel didn’t say we’re trying to get those records but the jail won’t give them to us or whatever. Ugh. JMO

During one of WDIV newscasts yesterday, reporter Shawn Ley, who is covering the trial, said that there is a court-ordered gag order on the information regarding the phone calls/electronic communications. If and when that information is made available to them, I'm sure it will be reported by local media.
