Me too, Barney. Thanks.

I would like to point out that a reporter is given a "beat" by his editor. The reporter must check with his sources on that beat on a regular basis, whether daily or whatever.

You did the job of a reporter. You checked a source and reported the results. I wish our media would do the same. Even a negative report by WRAL and N&O would let viewers and readers know SOMETHING.

--Jake

What do you mean by "a negative report"? Do you mean news that points to Jason's guilt, or do you mean that the news agencies should report that they have nothing new to report?

p/s: Sorry to hear you had a loss in the family.

Since you say you want to know:

Below is a transcript (I don't have a tivo, I recorded it the way God intended, with an old fashioned cassette recorder) of this morning's WTVD news broadcast. As always, the typos are mine...All mine.

They were talking about today being the two year anniversary of Janet's murder....

An unsolved case in Wake County has similarities to the Abaroa case. Michelle Young was pregnant when someone beat her to death in her home, after six months there are still no arrests. While the investigation has focused on her husband Jason they have not publicly called him a suspect and he is not cooperating with investigators. Jason Young lives in Brevard with the couple's three-year-old daughter Cassidy.

Sorry for your loss Jake, life is incredibly short. ((hugs))

As I don't have to read all the pages on this thread can someone update me - are they any closer to an arrest or is it all still hush hush???

This is more-or-less what I meant by a "negative" report:

Nearly six months after the brutal murder of Michelle Young, sheriff Joe Blow said today the investigation into the murder is still active.

Apparently Sheriff Blow and his officers are still investigating the hammer/mallet found on the Youngs' lawn Easter weekend. The search warrant has not yet been returned.

Sheriff Blow had no comment when asked about the hammer/mallet.

Cute,

I will however stick with my transcript. NOT wishful thinking or a figment of my imagination:

I think that pretty much brings everyone up to date.

(Don't even TRY to make me out to be the fool! YOU asked, I tried to accommodate you.)

Signed,

So is it just WRAL you're upset with since they haven't covered the latest warrant at all. I believe the N&O and the ABC affiliate both covered it. I expect they'll follow up when the warrant is returned and perhaps WRAL will pick it up then, too.

I do understand your frustration; I'm anxious for news, too. But I also realize there are lots of other crime stories in the Raleigh-Durham area for these reporters to keep up with. I'm trying to be patient, but it's not easy.

A "negative" report simply tells the newspaper reader that the editor has not forgotten the story. The reporter gives the sheriff the opportunity to say whatever he wants to say. It's a reminder to the public and LE that the story has not been forgotten. All facts are attributed to a source.

Most newspapers keep a follow-up file. These are news stories that need to be reported on daily, weekly, etc. The readers (and you) are not expected to be "patient". "Nothing new to report" stories are usually not front page news, but there is a place for them in the paper.

Sorry I couldn't keep up with your posts the last while. I had a death in the family. Funeral was Wednesday.

My last post was a bad one, as several have kindly pointed out. I misread the news article about the warrant. Maybe I wanted to NOT see the same "Jason is not cooperating" tag. Obviously the warrant is not yet available.

--Jake
So sorry for your loss Mr Jake.:(

I'm thinking the local news organizations must follow a different philosophy than you hold to, Jake. I emailed an N&O reporter this week about the case and was told that a new article would be published when new info becomes available. I also think that if they did publish a "nothing new to report" story, we'd be complaining that they're not digging hard enough or in the right places.

I think it's a sorry situation when the public has to write to a newspaper and ask for news. Unbelievable.

But at least you got an answer. I'm still waiting for an answer to my email to the N&O. I'll paste it below.

--Jake

I have had a discussion about this lead from your Jan. 22 story about the death of Michelle Young.

Some say the lead is inaccurate, that Michelle was strangled first and then beaten. Others say the story must be accurate since you report what the medical examiner stated. Others say the autopsy report does not indicate which came first.

Would you mind weighing in with your opinion, please?

Thank you!

Michelle Young’s killer struck her more than 10 times in the head, neck and shoulders and then strangled her, the state Office of The Chief Medical Examiner reported today.

I have to ask, Jake. Are you really surprised that they're not replying to you after the AL thing? I'm afraid you may have burned a few bridges there.

Probably right. I was writing to the N&O, not WRAL. But I've been critical of the N&O also.

And I didn't even point out that the reporter's "ten blows" were actually more like 32 or so.

Still, they might have seen my letter as somewhat insulting.

Scout,

Why don't you try the N&O with my question. See if you get an answer.

But I thought you were close to Jason? Why would you need the newspaper to give you any information?

To see what LE is doing?

I take it you weren't satisfied with my interpretation and critique of that N&O report. It's my opinion that the reporter mistook the order of injuries as described in the ME's summary as the order in which they were inflicted. I think we won't know the order of infliction until the ME testifies in court.

Edited to add: I believe the attempted strangulation occurred prior to the beating, but that's just my unlearned opinion.
