MN - Beau Shroyer, Wife of Detroit Lakes missionary killed in Angola arrested in connection to his death

Where are the 5 kids is what I want to know. <modsnip - speculation outside the bounds of the known facts of the case>
I wonder if they are still living where they were before, minus both parents, and plus Grandma. And with what servants are left. But how long can they stay there? SIM needs that house for the next missionary/missionaries that arrive. A family of 6 would have trouble fitting into some kind person's spare room, or a hotel room. So I imagine that before too long the family will be winging their way back to the US. Probably with Grandma, and almost certainly without Jackie. Jackie will be lucky if the occasional friend or relative goes to the expense and effort to travel all the way to Angola to see her every few years. She will have plenty of time for repenting and repining.

Jackie's mother has been flown in to Angola to babysit, and probably , to visit her daughter, if that's allowed ... Jackie's lucky she is imprisoned in Angola, it's one of the few places in Africa that has separate prisons for women and men, most other places , it's all in together, .... imagine that, for a dose of horror...
I didn’t see that. Thank god the kids have someone there.

It’s hard to know what she means by “Beau’s story”.

Also, as WS-ers well know, it’s typical for LE to be tight-lipped when they’re developing a case, and evidently they’re still missing one perp.

I imagine SIM would be unhappy about its reputation being besmirched, and that may give them reason to not talk. Perhaps they also have some legal exposure. What did they know about the Shroyers before they came to Angola and while they were there? There might have been issues even before the murder?

Surely the family is owed some communication from the organization sponsoring their loved one’s overseas work? If that is indeed who she is alluding too.

I would feel the same way if I were in their shoes. Hope they receive some help wading through this mess.

It’s not my experience that developing countries have the same resources as the US in any respect, and especially not in the medical arena. That’s why they’re termed “developing”. Wealthy folks in developing countries fly elsewhere to get medical treatment.
Developing country means just that- the country as a whole (key concept) is developing. Think of it as an average.

Countries can (and do) have small numbers of individually very developed clinics and hospitals available for select locals and..... still be a developing country regarding the average.

Here is an analogy.:

A new proffesional sports team can be "developing" in regards to player skill (again, the key concept is average skill level). Yet.... that same "developing" sports team can have a player who is very advanced skill wise as an individual.

I think that the 5 children should be the priority. They should be returned to the USA to stay with family until long term arrangements can be made. They may not want to leave their mother behind, but they cannot wait around for months or years while the investigation and trial drag out.

Visiting the suspected murderer in prison should be a secondary consideration. Someone can always return to help her after the children's needs have been addressed.

Regardless of the outcome of the murder investigation, their time in Angola is finished. Their work is done, and it's time to move on.

I am very familiar with developing countries. I grew up in several and have lived in more. I have sought medical care in one recently. As I mentioned, it's not my experience that these countries offer resources equivalent to what is available in the US. The wealthy simply fly elsewhere to get stuff like medical needs attended to. Heck, one country I lived in, the wealthy women flew to Miami to get their dry cleaning done.
In this context, "developing" refers to economic status. IMO It has no relationship to "developing" an individual on a sports team.

Please note that I said the reference to a sports team was an analogy.

Again, the term "developing country" means that on average (very key concept), the country is in a developing phase economically. It does not mean that everyone in the country is at the same economic level.

Rather some select individuals are going to have access to resources that nearly all others do not. Yet.... the country as a whole is still developing.

As for that local wealthy do..... I have no doubt that some (key word) fly to Miami for cleaners. In the end, I think both of us are painting with broad brushes:

-Me: All developing countries have advanced medical care for those who can afford it (not true- some simply do not)

- You: There is no way that a developing country can have some skilled doctors, skilled nurses and advanced medical equipment available to select patients (not true- some can-and do). India is probably the best example.

This article has a photo near the top of Jackie and Beau outdoors on a wooden deck. Maybe at a restaurant?

There is some weird blurring next to Beau's temple but what caught my attention was the lines of the boards on the decking. There's a bit of wooden deck showing between Beau's arm and his body. The lines on the deck boards there don't match up with the rest of the deck that's visible next to Jackie.
I've seen that picture myself, and agree that it's probably Photoshopped.

Doesn't look photoshopped to me at all? What you're seeing on the left side of Beau's head is a person seated at a table behind him. Don't see anything wrong with the decking alignment either?

As an American accused of a serious crime in Angola, Jackie will be subject to Angolan law and procedures. In Angola, the judicial system operates under Portuguese civil law, a framework that places a strong emphasis on judicial rather than jury decisions. This means that instead of a jury trial, Jackie’s case will likely be heard by a panel of judges who will assess the evidence and decide her fate. Angola’s legal system also typically includes extended pretrial detention, meaning Jackie could face a long wait before her trial officially begins.

If convicted, Jackie could face severe consequences. Although Angola abolished the death penalty in 1992, the country’s laws allow for life imprisonment in cases of serious crimes such as murder. Her role as the alleged mastermind in a high-profile murder-for-hire plot only adds to the gravity of the situation. She has the right to request consular assistance from the U.S. Embassy, though the Embassy’s role is limited to ensuring fair treatment and cannot influence the judicial outcome.

I'm not sure that one is photoshopped, but the one of Beau with the four kids definitely looks to be, as does the one with the shoe shine boys. In that one, also, Jackie appears to have impressively long fingers.

Little bits of extra info..... apparently, the whole family went to Brazil, to learn Portuguese, because at that time, Portugal closed it's borders due to Covid... ..no one can believe Jackie would do such a thing....

'
“Jackie had visions of helping poor children and Beau was right beside her,” said Stewart, who had worked with Beau during Detroit Lakes’ Festival of Birds, an annual birdwatching event hosted by the city of nearly 10,000. Beau volunteered to lead many of the birdwatching tours, said Stewart, who is the city’s tourism director.

“He was really good as a field trip leader, really good at describing things,” said Stewart, adding that Beau could easily describe 1,000 different bird species. “He really knew his birds.”

The Shroyers sold their $300,000 bungalow in Callaway, Minnesota, in 2021, according to public records and settled in for language school in Brazil, where they learned Portuguese, said Jackie during the presentation before the family’s trip. The family was originally supposed to go to Portugal to learn the language, but the country would not allow foreigners into the country during the COVID pandemic, she said.

I thought Jackie complained about Portuguese lessons in Angola? And they had the whole first year in Angola to learn the language? They're at 2+ years and still taking "boring Portuguese lessons"?
Y'all....this is CRAZY slow for someone to learn a foreign language when they're immersed in it. And Portuguese is not difficult; it's about like Spanish, as far as learning. 6 months immersion would be PLENTY for an adult, and they would be blabbing freely in about 3 months. For a kid, no time at all, especially if you let them play with other kids.
They hated language lessons and they STILL went to Angola?

I think, like many neocolonialists, they had the expectation that the people they interacted with would naturally do all the hard work and learn English to communicate with them.

MOO

Compared to some languages, Portuguese is not that hard, .. if it was Hungarian, well.. fair enough,.. or Urdu... I cannot find how long they spent in Brazil, whether they were in Rio , or Sao Paulo... or, and I doubt this, Manaus, where they actually should have gone to get an idea of Angola's weather.. but , .. I digress... ..

From this, I guess I am expected to believe that Berni, lover boy, spoke excellent English.. . not that this is not at all possible, but it is, in many ways, improbable.. Also, if Jackie was 'masterminding ' it, ( and I do not doubt this call by Superintendent Manuel) the contract killers were conversant in English...

It's all a bit muddy and murky.

Beau would have been entranced with the birds of Angola.. .. it's the home of the ostrich, they are as big as a small Fiat... probably faster, too..

It's interesting that there's no SM about their stay in Brazil.
It sounded like they're still basically at Portuguese 102. That would be second semester of a foreign language course at uni. Maybe 201 (3rd semester). And they're studying year round? 3-4 years? Portuguese is a basic Romance language. It's not inflected (inflected= nouns have different forms, e.g. possessive, direct object, subject, indirect object, etc. examples of this would be German, Greek, and Russian). Not as difficult as French. About like Spanish (which is super easy). FWIW English is a very complex language and can be challenging to foreign students.
IMO the Shroyers are not really embracing this mission or they'd be fluent. They were evidently embracing the IDEA of it.
How in the world are they doing any mission work at all with non-functional Portuguese?
I agree it would be a stretch if Berni spoke English. He prolly speaks Portuguese and his tribal language. I wonder if Jackie is gonna claim he misinterpreted what she wanted?

Imagine the poor kids lost their home and not just their parents. And they might just have been made penniless by the Angola boondoggle.
