I wonder if they are still living where they were before, minus both parents, and plus Grandma. And with what servants are left. But how long can they stay there? SIM needs that house for the next missionary/missionaries that arrive. A family of 6 would have trouble fitting into some kind person's spare room, or a hotel room. So I imagine that before too long the family will be winging their way back to the US. Probably with Grandma, and almost certainly without Jackie. Jackie will be lucky if the occasional friend or relative goes to the expense and effort to travel all the way to Angola to see her every few years. She will have plenty of time for repenting and repining.

Jackie's lucky she is imprisoned in Angola, it's one of the few places in Africa that has separate prisons for women and men, most other places , it's all in together, .... imagine that, for a dose of horror...

Also, as WS-ers well know, it’s typical for LE to be tight-lipped when they’re developing a case, and evidently they’re still missing one perp.

I imagine SIM would be unhappy about its reputation being besmirched, and that may give them reason to not talk. Perhaps they also have some legal exposure. What did they know about the Shroyers before they came to Angola and while they were there? There might have been issues even before the murder?

Surely the family is owed some communication from the organization sponsoring their loved one’s overseas work? If that is indeed who she is alluding too.

I would feel the same way if I were in their shoes. Hope they receive some help wading through this mess.

It’s not my experience that developing countries have the same resources as the US in any respect, and especially not in the medical arena. That’s why they’re termed “developing”. Wealthy folks in developing countries fly elsewhere to get medical treatment.

Developing country means just that- the country as a whole (key concept) is developing. Think of it as an average.

Countries can (and do) have small numbers of individually very developed clinics and hospitals available for select locals and..... still be a developing country regarding the average.

Here is an analogy.:

A new proffesional sports team can be "developing" in regards to player skill (again, the key concept is average skill level). Yet.... that same "developing" sports team can have a player who is very advanced skill wise as an individual.

I think that the 5 children should be the priority. They should be returned to the USA to stay with family until long term arrangements can be made. They may not want to leave their mother behind, but they cannot wait around for months or years while the investigation and trial drag out.

Visiting the suspected murderer in prison should be a secondary consideration. Someone can always return to help her after the children's needs have been addressed.

Regardless of the outcome of the murder investigation, their time in Angola is finished. Their work is done, and it's time to move on.

As for that local wealthy do..... I have no doubt that some (key word) fly to Miami for cleaners. In the end, I think both of us are painting with broad brushes:

-Me: All developing countries have advanced medical care for those who can afford it (not true- some simply do not)

- You: There is no way that a developing country can have some skilled doctors, skilled nurses and advanced medical equipment available to select patients (not true- some can-and do). India is probably the best example.

There is some weird blurring next to Beau's temple but what caught my attention was the lines of the boards on the decking. There's a bit of wooden deck showing between Beau's arm and his body. The lines on the deck boards there don't match up with the rest of the deck that's visible next to Jackie.

I think, like many neocolonialists, they had the expectation that the people they interacted with would naturally do all the hard work and learn English to communicate with them.

It's interesting that there's no SM about their stay in Brazil.
It sounded like they're still basically at Portuguese 102. That would be second semester of a foreign language course at uni. Maybe 201 (3rd semester). And they're studying year round? 3-4 years? Portuguese is a basic Romance language. It's not inflected (inflected= nouns have different forms, e.g. possessive, direct object, subject, indirect object, etc. examples of this would be German, Greek, and Russian). Not as difficult as French. About like Spanish (which is super easy). FWIW English is a very complex language and can be challenging to foreign students.
IMO the Shroyers are not really embracing this mission or they'd be fluent. They were evidently embracing the IDEA of it.
How in the world are they doing any mission work at all with non-functional Portuguese?
I agree it would be a stretch if Berni spoke English. He prolly speaks Portuguese and his tribal language. I wonder if Jackie is gonna claim he misinterpreted what she wanted?
