MN - Beau Shroyer, Wife of Detroit Lakes missionary killed in Angola arrested in connection to his death

  • #561
Beau said, he was not just jealous in general, but jealous of Jesus. . I don't quite understand how that could factor in to reality , but that's what he said. It was a motivating factor for him....
I’ve seen this in several couples over the years when a spouse comes to a new or deeper commitment to their faith, their hobbies, habits and focus of attention can dramatically shift … rather like an infatuation phase… and the other partner feels slighted or cutoff from the time, attention and focus they used to enjoy

Ironically I’ve seen it equally in couples where the offended spouse is not Christian/religious, is lukewarm/occasional Christian, and even the on fire at church all the time, praying for my spouse to be saved type Christian-

It seems mostly to do the the change in dynamics at home, church and community that spark the jealousy…

That could have been part of the dynamics here if she suddenly got super involved and focused … moo

- Beau Speaking @ 26:48

Bakke Church | Welcome to worship | By Bakke Lutheran Church | Facebook - August 11, 2024 Beau & Jackie speak @ 15:50 - Jackie speaks in depth in this one.
Was there ever a truer ministry that took off into absolutely long term dangerous chartered territory , with red flags all over the place, but they went ahead anyways... ???

From the pulpit, Beau speaking...

'Our mission is not like other missionaries do, we are not doctors, or pilots, or home builders, our ministry (!) is based on relationships, getting to people deeply, and intimately, using those relationships to delve deeply into their lives, and helping with their physical needs, and also their spiritual needs. and their spiritual darkness they live in !!!!! ( THEY live in?? like.. .... ) . '

No wonder it went so far off the rails, that one ends up dead, one is on the run to the Namibian border, one is in prison on a charge of murder, awaiting trial and two are charged with conspiracy to murder, and murder. 'getting to people , deeply and intimately. and using those relationships.... '.. far far better to just build a road, or a school, or plant trees.. ..

They do seem to have been, let's say, not totally up to their appointed task. Or didn't understand it. The little girl was going to teach people about chickens! As if people in developing nations don't know all about chickens!

I believe it was reported earlier that the knife that killed Beau was an American knife. Which had been given as a present to Berni from Jackie. Was that right? Gee, I wonder why she did that?

There is nothing strange about this. To understand "born again Christians" and Revelations... it makes sense.

One question about this snipped section of the obit: What do you all make of the phrase “an opportunity as a Conservation Officer fell short”? I am not sure whether it implies Beau got the job and didn’t like it, or if he was hired and assessed as a poor fit for the job. It just seems a bit odd to me that someone with “Law Enforcement Training” would totally change careers (in BS’s case, to real estate) if their desired LE position wasn’t available or (for some reason) didn’t pan out. For that matter, I wonder what prompted him to want to change LE tracks, from SRO (where he was apparently well-liked, unless you think the obit’s comment about him being “affectionately” called “Officer Nice Guy” is not entirely accurate) to Conservation Officer?
Edited to add that it just occurred to me that, depending on when he was employed as an SRO, he could’ve been out of work due to Covid (assuming he was working in the Detroit Lakes public schools at that time and those schools were partially/exclusively remote in 2020 and/or 2021), and thus might’ve sought an LE job that was primarily outdoors and required less face-to-face contact with others, like a Conservation Officer).
It could be there wasn't funding to hire a Conservation Officer when it came down to it, or the location wasn't what he wanted, salary was too low, benefits not adequate, etc. I wouldn't read anything disparaging into that comment, tbh, except it indicates what his interests were and that his interest wasn't real estate, but that real estate agent was simply a job.

I am deeply disturbed that the mainstream press hasn’t dug any deeper on this matter.
They are simply reporting what the Angolan police spokesman reported- and there is documented corruption within this police force.
The fact that they are regurgitating what THREE KNOWN CONVICTED CRIMINALS are saying ONE CONVICTED FOR A PRIOR KIDNAPPING and not offering anything that Jackie is saying is truly upsetting.
WE KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT JACKIE’S SIDE OF THIS STORY.
WE DO NOT KNOW IF SHE WAS IN THE VEHICLE AND RAN OR IF SHE WAS AT HOME WHEN BEAU WAS MURDERED AND CLUELESS. WE DO NOT KNOW.
Nobody has even asked for Jackie’s side of this story or her comments.

MARIE A I so admire your strength in presenting a "plausible & alternate scenario" on what could have occurred in this horrible crime. You have made me "not accept" what is being spoon fed by MSM.... there is going to be at least 3 different versions of this crime, NO MATTER WHAT: Hers/His/Theirs. But for now, In My Opinion we have very five minors, U.S. children who are in very vulnerable positions. Their Father has been killed by men who already have criminal histories! And, more than willing to quickly "roll-over" on each other when caught. The killers surely have relatives/friends/accomplices heretofore in the area who might not look with a kind or objective eye. They are reading the same stories we are reading. ie "Manipulative rich missionary wife seduces young Angolan men into killing her husband." Right? If the citizens were slow to include them in their community before, think of how much worse it must be now?? Immediately move the minors out of the country so they can not be used as pawns, be safe from outside pressures and not be used as leverage in keeping J.Shroyer silent. JS could be facing a long trial and "if convicted" her children do not need to literally serve time with her in Angola. ETA Such a horrible tragedy....so unnecessary.
PS I have appreciated the input of so many on this forum who have shared their international experiences.

Good points on this and your entire post.

I would add to your observations above that jealousies and stresses can really increase if one spouse changes from nominal / cultural Christian to active Evangelical- then expects the other spouse to follow.

This can especially be so if the marriage was entered into with the unspoken agreement that the couple's Christian practice would be occasional Sunday services and either Christmas or Easter. Husband or wife then get saved and suddenly Sunday services 52 weeks a year, additional prayer meetings and Wednesday night Bible studies are a big part of their new life.

If the nominal spouse does not follow the other into Evangelical status, there is the potential for jealousy- especially if the Evangelical starts to consider people at the new church as his/ her "chosen family". If the nominal spouse goes evangelical, there can be alot of resentment followed by obvious less than fully enthusiastic participation.

Yes, also true if one spouse leaves the faith, becomes Roman Catholic or Orthodox (or Jewish I saw once) and or if there is any major shift in dynamics from the “status quo”

Not much different than women being jealous of golf/golf buddies or work/work wives (relationships)

Or when men are jealous of the children, wife’s volunteering or girlfriend tribe…

Normally it’s not a blunt as “I’m jealous of Jesus” (which does absolutely sound bizarre at first blush) but the jealousy of external factors and or dramatic changes of course are rather common.. moo

Very well said.

And in some ultra conservative churches etc. , "Jesus" (as you stated not the individual Jesus, but the new church with its numerous commitments) can umm... "discourage" associating with, or having friendships with non believers.

So, as you noted, the husband (in this case?) potentially gets jealous over the wife's new friends and church commitments etc. Then adding to it, is the possibility of being directly or indirectly pressured via the wife to drop friendships with "non believers".

I can imagine like somebody can feel that they have lost participation in their marriage- and no longer control their own life by being able to freely select friends and activities.

According to reports, Jackie's mother has flown to Angola and is looking after the children, and maybe the kids do not want to leave, as yet, it is perfectly possible that our hardworking Superintendent , Manuel is allowing them to visit their mother, NOT the PRESS, just like it is in Minnesota, Jackie is not going to be allowed to promote her case in the press, that will happen at trial (just as it does in Minnesota,) because that is a hold over of Portuguese law. Maybe some of the kids have to stay as they are witness to the going on's at home during the 'romance' of the security guard and Jackie..

Mr Fairman, the director of SIM has gone to Angola to sort stuff out, apparently.

Maybe the kids have a fear of leaving Angola.. It is entirely possible that they are attached to the staff there, that they are attached to their home there, that they fear even more change than that which has taken place, ...

The whole business must be a source of extreme irritation to Angolan authorities, a white American missionary woman in this situation, with an American Presidential visit on the horizon, close on the horizon, all the to and fro between the Embassy and the Court and the police station , phone calls from frantic rellies far away, inconveniently speaking only English, if only it was a local lady in a snit with her husband, things would be easier, and smoother.

That’s exactly how things can unfortunately play out if communication isn’t open and expectations managed and or one or both parties lacks empathy and emotional intelligence- there seems to be a lot going on between forward facing image projection and behind the scenes motivation and behavior in this case

I feel badly for the children for the trauma of losing a parent, and being in a foreign country under such stressful circumstances- moo

I'm a little bemused by some of the commentary to date. So far, we've heard nothing from friends, family, the missionary group or from anyone else claiming that Jackie is being framed. I'm not saying it's impossible, but as of yet there's been no indication that's the case from anyone who is in the know.

Similarly, I've yet to hear that the children are being kept in Angola against their will or the will of their guardians. Again, I don't deny it's a possibility, but I think we need to know more about the situation before rushing to claim they're pawns in some game by the Angolan government and need to be rescued.

All I see is a lot of assumptions being made based on the fact that a white, Christian lady was arrested for murder in an African country. That's basically all we know to date. Yet people are claiming that this is a stitch-up, and she's being falsely incriminated. I just don't get how anyone can come to such a definitive conclusion.

I've only seen it said the knife was given to Bernadino by Beau, not Jackie.

SIM USA Statement Regarding The Death of Beau Shroyer

The global SIM community is heartbroken over the death of our friend and colleague Beau Shroyer, who was killed in a violent criminal attack in Angola on Friday, October 25. We are shocked and devastated to learn that his wife, Jackie Shroyer, has been arrested in connection with his death.

SIM is grateful to Angolan law enforcement for their diligence in investigating this matter and encourages patience and respect for all involved as the legal process unfolds. SIM remains committed to supporting the ongoing pursuit of justice for Beau and has taken steps to ensure that Jackie has appropriate legal representation.

The SIM USA leadership team is working closely with the SIM team in Angola and with the Shroyers’ home church, Lakes Area Vineyard Church in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, to care for the Shroyers’ five children
and everyone else affected by this tragedy. We continue to keep them all in our prayers.

Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and those experiencing unimaginable grief and loss during this time, SIM is unable to provide further comment.

I mean this in the most respectful way:

SIM has said they are making sure Jackie has legal representation. Lakes Area Vineyard Church is the Shroyer's Home Church. They did not sponsor them in their missionary endeavor.

This is a complicated legal matter, we no idea what all is going on behind the scenes in terms of the kids or for Jackie. To accuse these organizations of blackmail or a cover-up with no facts to back up the suspicion? There is no shortage of funds to get the kids home, or people willing to care for them once Stateside. There may be red tape and legal reasons they aren't home yet. They are not with another family, they are currently being cared for by Jackie's Mom.

IIRC, it was first reported that the knife was a present from Beau, then later that it was from Jackie.

BIG CHANGE NOW BEING REPORTED!!!! (Fabulous news in my opinion...and I can now breathe a sigh of relief.)

The Shroyer kids — ages 9 to 17 — are now with family in the United States and receiving expert care, according to a news release from SIM.
