MN - Beau Shroyer, Wife of Detroit Lakes missionary killed in Angola arrested in connection to his death

Lots of Beau's relatives (cousins, aunt, uncle, sister) and many spoke of him. Hunter, ornithology, good sense of humor.
Except for one mention of "J's" name ...No one spoke about her. She is apparently "off limits" to any discussion. Makes me wonder if it is a case of: "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything."??
Hmmm, I may have to rethink my scenario. Definitely got the persona non grata vibe in that regard.
I skipped around and listened to parts of the service. The sound wasn’t that great so it was hard to hear details. I did catch some of what you point out.

I couldn’t see who was in the front row. The video started when everyone was seated and ended promptly with the last word. Under the circumstances, there is a huge elephant in the room - that’s a tough one to overcome. The only choice is to avoid speaking her name or mentioning Jackie at all.

I have trouble visualizing what it might be like to be in prison in a developing country. This isn't Angola, but I thought this prison in the Philippines night give some insight about prison conditions in an unfamiliar country.

When Beau was home this past summer from Angola, he posted about selling homes in MN.

I looked him up on Zillow when the news about his murder originally hit. In 2020, his last full year as a realtor, he was involved in 35 transactions, either as a buyer or seller's agent. I was actually a little surprised. I expected him to not be doing that well, since people often make radical life changes when they're struggling in their current situation. But it seems like before he went to Africa, his real estate business was humming right along.

They had evidently sold their family home, too. That's a little odd if you're busy doing sales. He was still at it last summer, yes?

Complete s-i-l-e-n-c-e ... I wonder if Beau's family has heard from LE in Angola yet?
Yes KNOX it is very quiet.... I am thinking this is a good thing and perhaps a time of rethinking this case and tossing aside Bernadino's, IN MY OPINION ridiculous, claims. First of all, what gives with the knife? By the strangest of coincidences, I saw someone using exactly that same style (double serrated) and it is a knife designed for cutting up "pineapples." No kidding...who'd-a-known-it? "According to available data, Angola produces more pineapples than countries like Mexico, Colombia, and Vietnam based on recent pineapple production figures; placing Angola as a significant pineapple producer globally, though not among the top producers.
Who gives a pineapple cutting knife to a lifelong resident of a country who produces over a million pounds of pineapples a year????
The last thing I would give a lifelong resident of Hawaii is a grass skirt, a coconut grater to a lifelong resident of Indonesia, or send banana chips to my pals in Ecuador...
It just never made sense to me....frankly it is a story Bernadino made up "on the fly" to shift blame onto someone else. And if the investigators are buying the convoluted story...oh geeez lahweeez. So far we have only heard "his side of the story." And the theory of "possible" "alleged" "rumored" "suspected" romantic involvement... but I just can't imagine the relationship going in that direction. When does a Mother of 5 children and a husband have time for a guy half her age? Frankly, I wouldn't/couldn't have the energy or inclination. The "promise" of $50K US, would be the equivalent of 15 years income for the average Angolan....shaking my head on that alone. "Oh I am a young inexperienced street criminal, seduced by an American missionary, and just couldn't resist the rich foreign woman's request."? She would have to have a heart if stone and ice in her veins to plan and witness the horrific manner of her husband's death. The whole scenario is more like "Unlawful Entry" than "Mrs. Soffel." Again, in my opinion.

Beau was officially laid to rest on Saturday during a short, but meaningful graveside service surrounded by his family.

December 21st, 2024
We held a beautiful memorial service for Beau on November 30, where we prayed and shared our favorite Beau stories.

Beau's body departed Angola, Africa on December 11, aboard an AirFrance flight. His connecting flight from Paris, France to Minneapolis, MN was canceled, and he landed back in the US on December 14. Customs was not open, so our funeral director was not able to take him into his care until December 16. Initially, we had planned his interment for December 14, but due to the delays, we had to reschedule to today, December 21.

Beau was laid to rest during a short, but meaningful graveside service surrounded by his family. We feel so blessed to have him "home", where we'll be able to visit him when we need that comfort. Thank you again for your support.

Lastly, if you knew Beau, we hope you'll find humor in the fact that he was literally late to his own funeral! There's no doubt he'd have had a good laugh about it!

Sincerely,
Beau's family

That is interesting- and I think your conclusion is very telling and timeless: people often make radical life changes when they're struggling in their current situation.

But as you noted, he seemed to be successful at the time he decided to "leave it all behind". Perhaps your observations have two explanations:

A- The family made the decision to become permanent missionaries in Africa stress fee and with external pressures.

B- The Zillow information is based on deceptive data.

Towards possibility B:

One of my family friends switched to real estate as a second career. She told me that the industry (at least in DFW) is absolutely ruled by senior agents. It took a long time before she was given her own homes to sell- and even then, they were not "hot" properties by nay means.

She described arrangements where she needed to present homes for a senior agent assigned several homes to sell. If her pitch was the one that sold the home, she received say, a $500- $750 "tip out" from the senior agent who "controlled it".

Anyways..... I wonder if a company, however, may of identify "presenters" as having been "involved in the sale"- just to help them build up their portfolios?

Her involvement, however, was only to present the home- and get a modest tip out if her pitch sold it. She did not get the full commission (senior did). If her pitch did not sell it, her tip out was even less ("Thanks for trying, here is $100-200).

Any real estate people here......?

Still the rainy season in Angola, but on top of that , life in South West Africa rolls on, the Legal Year 2025 begins this week, so by this time, the judges (3) that have been assigned to Mrs Shroyers indictment have been chosen and briefed, and begun their investigation. They won't be talking to the press, but mainly, Mrs Shroyer is not of much interest to the general population, at this point. She murdered her husband, it happens, people do stupid things, it is not an over riding tragedy...... in other news, Cholera has appeared in the northern province of Angola, 87 cases in four provinces , this has become an urgent matter....

Meanwhile, just over the border, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, war, savage and brutal has deepened, likely to spread over into Angola and Zimbabwe, It's been raging for some time and the news today is horrifying...

A womens prison has been set alight, in Goma, which is right on the border... Rwandan rebels at large.......

No news of the disappearing third man in this crime.. I can think of some scenario's.. he has died somewhere , out in the bush... or someone has done him in... or. he has made his way to Mozambique, where his language would be at home ( an ex Portugese colony like Angola ).. or he has somehow , on slow buses, made his way across the Arabian Gulf to Qatar, or Bahrain, working in construction along with millions of other young African men....... or.. he is the state's witness and under their protection, this seems to me to be the most likely.....

I don't find anything surprising about this whole dreadful murder, I think she did organise it, and Bernadino assisted in it... one thing that had the ring of truth from the Police Commander was the squeamishness of Mrs Shroyer and Berni.. neither of them wanted to actually do the killing, but they wanted him dead. Her hysterics ( according to police reports ) was probably because she did not realise that death by machete was so messy, so barbaric..

Thanks for all of that Trooper. I ‘loved’ it, because it was written at all, and because you, as usual, give such in depth reporting/info! Appreciate the update. Sick about the Goma events.

I just want to repeat this post, to keep one's chins up , so to speak... it feels like nothing is happening, but think of the Justice system in Angola, as a swan , gliding along, but rapid paddling underwater... things are happening, and on schedule.. nothing is being left out, or delayed or left behind.... there is a schedule, and it will be adhered to by the Judicia Angola...

There really is an enforceable timeline that the Prosecutor must follow, .. it is set down in the framework of the legal registry, this would be explained to Jackie, she would be informed of what will occur..

Pre-trial detention is subject to strict timelines which can not be surpassed. These vary with the phase of the procedure and type of crime.

Global Overview – Portugal – Global Access to Justice Project

These are (counting from the day it was enforced):

(1)

(a) 4 months without an accusation brought forth;

(b) 8 months, the defendant asked for a judicial review of the accusation and one has not been produced;

(c) One year and two months without a sentence in the first instance;

(d) One year and six months without a definitive conviction;

(2) The deadlines above are augmented respectively to six months, ten months, one year and six months and two years in cases of terrorism, violent or highly organized criminality or when the procedure relates to crimes punishable by 8 years incarceration or more or crimes of:

( worth reading, because it gets longer and more intricate.... )

Angolan law follows these principles, all of their jurisprudence and penal code is based on Portuguese Law.

RSBM

Thanks for detailing all this. Puts it into perspective for us on WS that the whole world doesn't revolve around the crime world on WS, which is pretty American-centric with a few forays into other parts of the world on occasion. MOO

In regards to her hysterics, im just wondering:

There are many methods in "shake-downs". IF it was known or obvious to 'security guards' (who are often employed for their knowing what locals to pay off for protection & safe passage) that Beau & the Mrs had sources of ample funds, they and their criminally experienced friends could take care of the Beau side of things and set things up for local enforcement/justice system to take care of the shake down of the rest of the funds/sources from the Mrs. Being incarcerated allows for interrogations and whatnot in a protected environment shielded from prying eyes and ears.

These wonderings come from an inside view of some of the more shady corrupted systems in countries where that sort of thing has been endemic back into antiquity. And yes, I've known several people who have been shaken down by corrupt cultures and systems though neither of them involved loss of life. They both were left penniless at the end by the cooperation between corrupt actors on both the inside and outside of law enforcement. Its like walking a tight wire in some countries and some localities. The "missing" actor in this scenario, still living life free somewhere has me curious about possible complicity. I have to question a woman who's given birth 5 times, is a full time stay at home mom home schooling 5 kids, has teenagers most likely watching her every move, and is living under somewhat uncomfortable conditions regarding illness, etc, would at all likely have had a literal affair with a young security guard. How? Where?

I think this is a really helpful perspective, and I agree with you. I’ve lived in a similar sort of country, and have had to pay bribes (as a victim of crime) to the police and to other government officials. I once got so angry at the system, knowing the police knew exactly who robbed me and probably were getting a cut, that I refused to pay the bribe. The US embassy support worker actually told me I needed to pay them off when I rang for assistance, but I was too fed up with it all. My husband’s company ended up getting involved and paying the bribe because they wanted us to stop causing a fuss and get the paperwork sorted. So none of this would surprise me in the slightest.

Well, I think it may be the case that the oldest child, who JS characterized as her “best friend”/sidekick and who seems to be somewhere between 18-20 years old, was fulfilling some of the parental duties (homeschooling, cooking/cleaning) for or with her younger siblings, leaving JS free to go on “errands” outside of the compound, accompanied by the security guard…for safety’s sake, of course.
