I think it appropriate to say this case has gone "as quiet as a church mouse."???
Did see some pics on InstaG public but I don't have further access. (One has to "sign in' and
I've given up trying to remember passwords for anywhere other than here.)

It is nearly 8 months since Jackie was charged with the murder of her husband, Beau, and also she was charged with conspiracy to murder, which may, perhaps carry the heavier sentence should she be convicted of it..

The Justica Angola dept. runs on a very strict timetable re it's courts and there is an enforceable penalty should Jackie's trial go over the 8 month limit, from her charges being laid, so I expect some sort of news in the next week or so... unless they count November as the first month instead of October, but even so, some movement will become apparent.. There would be lots of checking and balancing going on, as Justica would want to have everything just exact and correct but still, they have to produce a trial or explain the delay, so either way, some sort of news will emerge.

As far as I can tell, the USA has not , as yet closed off the American Embassy at Luanda, this was threatened by Trump, <modsnip> it seems that threat has been somewhat diluted, luckily for Jacki.. If that does happen, it's likely that Angola will close off USA visitors as well, not an impossibility. So for now, she has the services of the Embassy , such as they are, to assist her in her confinement, books, shoes, medicine etc...

Also, luckily, she is in a country that separates men and women in prison, not all countries do, so this has to be counted as a bonus.. Angola is progressive in many ways, her nutrition would be addressed and connections to her family back in Minnesota would be encouraged...

I am assuming she is in regular health, as no report has been made of her hospitalisation , as far as I can tell...

SO .. we wait.

EDITED to add. -----.no news of the third man as yet.. the silence points to perhaps he is under guard as a witness for the State.. that is a strong possibility. Also . Jackie is being portrayed as a 'co- author' of this murder, so it is likely that her and Bernie will be tried together, that is, they will not have separate trials.... remains to be seen , and this possibility, 2 defendants for the same murder, may cause some delays re adjudication stuff.. again.. we wait.

Ditto on the thanks.

Wonder how Beau’s family and the kids are doing? And if they (kids) are still communicating with Jackie?

I don’t know how they can reconcile what she’s accused of doing to their Dad, but hope they are receiving the best counseling services available. Their lives were completely destroyed.

As far as I can tell, the USA has not , as yet closed off the American Embassy at Luanda, this was threatened by Trump, along with deprecations hurled at the South African ambassador, ( and PM, too ) , but oil money talks in Angola, much louder than your everyday Republican, so it seems that threat has been somewhat diluted, luckily for Jacki.. If that does happen, it's likely that Angola will close off USA visitors as well, not an impossibility. I was randomly thinking of this case today and so glad to find your post from today.

Your knowledge of the region is particularly helpful to me and others, no doubt!

ETA: typo.

It is nearly 8 months since Jackie was charged with the murder of her husband, Beau,
This article from February says she was “ formally charged” (no date given, but it appears to be more recent than her arrest in October). So I am wondering when the eight months starts.

Jackie Shroyer, the woman accused of plotting to kill her husband Beau Shroyer in a murder-for-hire scheme, has been charged with murder, according to a statement from her family's church.

The Detroit Lakes, Minn. church Lakes Area Vineyard, announced on Monday, Feb. 24, that Jackie had been formally charged as a "co-author" in Beau's death.

Its a bit opaque for me to be certain ...my translations of the Porto/Angolan Law journal are not contradictory but not exactly crystal clear, either.. I am taking it as 8 months from the arrest, which was Nov 3rd I think... but equally, you could be on the money, too..8 months from the formal charge starting the clock....no news whatsoever re the charges for Bernadino or when he was charged... my conclusions are he was charged the same day, and so were the hired hands...

Then, we have the conundrum ..is it a double trial. ? Jacki and Berni together, then the two hired men together... ? I am assuming that Jacki and Berni will be tried together, she being promoted as 'the mastermind' and him the 'acolyte'.. .... this complicates things tremendously, but not impossibly.. just extra time to be taken..

Angola abolished the death penalty last century... the last person executed in Angola ( For treason , he faced a firing squad) was in 1977... so Jacki is not facing that sort of demise. But certainly a long sentence..

Let’s hope it’s eight months from the arrest so we won’t have to wait as long. But logically, I think it’s from formal charges because sometimes people are arrested but not charged (or tried). So that would be late October, I expect. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Sigh.

Just to add to my (probably optimistic ) timeline , I asked a Brazilian bloke in my office to go over my Porto notes, his conclusion, taking into the slight variation on language is that the timeline starts ( the 8 month thingo ) from the moment she/he is incarcerated.. that is, when Jacki came under the purview and control of the Angolan State...

....... so that would make it 8 months after Nov 3rd when she was arrested and held in situ under the holding provisions of the law, considering the charge was murder and conspiracy to murder.. ..but we both agreed that either of us could be missing a crucial point of the Angolan law, ,... the probability is high in consideration of the complexity..

This may, or may not make things clearer!!

I find this case fascinating, even though I definitely understand the pain that Beau's family is going through, particularly his children. We've seen other cases where one parent is accused of killing the other and the kids often side with the surviving parent. Understandable, since they don't want to lose both of their parents.

The other challenging twist to this case is that is that the victim and the accused were Americans charge in another country, with different legal rules and cultural differences.

Did the kids ever go back to the US?

Yes, their grandparents went and got them from Angola and brought them back to the US.

IMO:
Just plain ole' bizarre.

'Before leaving for Angola, missionary and wife charged with his murder shared their troubled paths to Jesus'

JMO, but neither of them sound particularly intelligent or mature. Still, that's not a crime. Murder is.

RSBM
So, who wouldn't want to stay in Angola, eh?

I wish the sponsoring missionary organization had been more mature / intelligent.

The couple seems to of been tossed into the field with no mentors, little training and little screening in regards for aptitude for the work.

I would have thought that the transition from Minnesota resident to Missionary in Angola would have been more gradual:

- Make some "come and see" type site visits for 30 days or so to see if this is really for you.
- More training in the US regarding realistic expectations, how to handle domestic help, local languages and culture.
- First assignment is assisting a mentor couple running a well established mission. Mentoring couple also reviews trainees for aptitude etc.

But..... as you implied, tossing people into the field is not a crime, murder is.
