MO - 1-month-old girl dies when mother, Mariah Thomas, allegedly places her in oven instead of crib, mom charged - Kansas City, 9 Feb 2024

Is there current evidence that she has such a diagnosis?
Not that I have seen confirmed. It was speculation in part due to the photographs I have seen of her and comparing it to adult clients I have had. The intention was to present a possible reason other than intentional harm.

I wonder if the grandfather took her out of the crib and put her in the car seat to rush to the hospital but then decided to call 911 and an ambulance came instead?

that's what I was thinking

I'm going with she did it on purpose and then realized how much trouble she'd be in so tried to pretend it was a mistake. JMO.
Poor baby.

Are we talking about serious cognitive impairment? Like someone not capable of ... being left alone herself? Horrifying as it is, is it possible she thought she could warm the baby up, not near the oven but in the oven, and only intended it to be a minute.... and then forgot that the baby wasn't asleep in the crib, lost track of time, until it was too, too late?

I'm just sick about what happened to this beautiful baby. I'm trying to understand how this happened. Mental deficit is the only thing that makes any kind of sense here.

Me, I can't get that sweet baby's face out of my mind.

Where is the father of the child?
Why did the father of the child leave the child with the mother if the mother has serious cognitive impairment or an acute problem?
If the mother has a serious cognitive impairment, is fathering a kids with her even, ermh, legal? Moral?
I have my suspicions about the daddy and none of them are very favourable on him tbh. He must be legally responsible for his own kid, and should be held accountable, too.

The mum did the deed, but I'm suspecting it's more of a medical case than anything else. The dad, on the other hand, is probably not a medical case, but get's off easy as it is normalized for men to neglect the kids, even if it pretty darn directly causes the death of the kid.

Poor grandfather who made the discovery. I'm assuming he had to work to keep a roof over their head etc. And then seeing this out of the blue - and now he is losing both of the girls.

I'm not ruling this out, but IMO usually these cases have the baby suffocated or shaken. It keeps on yelling, you throw a pillow on the mouth or attack it to shut it up. If you try to be sneaky or get rid of it for good, you probably drown the baby as history has shown us. Or just neglect it.

A baby in a hot oven would not even shut up, it would not "go away" and it's very hard to explain away. At the very least, someone doing this is stupid below the normal stupid. More probably, distorted thinking and psychotic.

EDIT: looking at her FB photos, the one on July 26th 2023 displays her hands full of marks that look like cigarette burns to me on first glance - but maybe it is some sort of a skin problem instead? There are also some on her legs. With all the "self love" messages, this might point at some sort of a self injury background. It is maybe possible she has a previous kid who is alive (though I think it is her nice/nephew and the "another child" comment about the SMS hints at the passed away one), and it is likely she had another kid who was a miscarriage and passed away.

Thomas is charged with endangering the welfare of a child in the first degree, leading to the death of a child, a class A felony.
Thank you. So, no manslaughter or murder charges, right? Or in that state, is this charge comparable?

Poor baby.
Until I see diagnosis/diagnoses from a shrink, I'm going with this also.

That's all the charges I could find. Can't answer whether it's comparable.

Speculating;
If she has turned the oven up high, she could have taken her out pretty quickly and she still would have been burnt from skin contacting the metal and from melted clothes and nappy
If she has cognitive impairment to the level where she doesn't understand putting a baby in the oven is not how you warm it up she
might not understand how to use an oven either
and she might not be able to recognise a more subtle injury to the baby at first
or know how to do first aid

And if hypothetically she was in a panic that the baby was too cold and might die she might think anything is worth trying

Just my opinion

I will be SO ANGRY if it turns out she is disabled and is punished and whoever this guy is just gets away with being POSSIBLY a deadbeat dad and POSSIBLY a statutory rapist or violent rapist

IF she is found to be mentally handicapped the baby's DNA should be added to criminal and public databases until he is found IN MY OPINION

Frankly I think he should be found through DNA even if she's fine and did it on purpose
As you say Za'Riah was his responsibility too

Yes, if she had cognitive impairment she may have not understood that what she was doing was dangerous and fatal. I agree.

After reading how much she loved this child, in her own unique words, and how much she wanted to be the best mother possible, I now see this as a horrible, tragic accident much more than what I initially thought (that some cold, crass drug-using mother who had actually wanted to hurt a baby for crying too much had done this deliberately).

Chances are, he's mentally disabled himself in some way, and/or a predator who knew what he was doing, or maybe there's some overlap. We may never know.

Yes, our society continues to fully place the blame on women when they don't care for their newborns and lets the male parent off as if they had no responsibilities whatsoever. It's wrong.

BBM-
IMO, all of the above can be true. She could love the baby and want to be the best Mom possible. But deliberately hurt her in a moment of frustration.

One of her cash bond requirements would be "medication compliance". Was she supposed to be on meds and wasn't taking them?

Yes, sad but true.
That could very well be.
