MO - Tornado Slams Joplin

The below link from CNN interview with the man who made the videotape. He said all that was left standing was the freezer they were in and even at that there were holes ripped into the freezer.

A link from Isaac's twitter

He is a musician and a very lucky young man. From the video I could hear him and his friend saying that they loved everyone as the tornado hit and they thought they where going to all die. What a wonderful young man to care about others in catastrophe.

Listen to his song it is very touching.

Oh my...I just listened to that with the scanner in the background...chilling!

Yes, it is chilling. Just the name gave me goose bumps "main street blues".

I found this in readers' comments on the page with the lead story about the tornado, on the Joplin Globe website; I took the liberty of editing the lines into poetic form but added nothing - it was simply and perfectly this:

Terri T,
Are you still out there?
I hope you are safe from this storm.
Do you still have 'Blue', the doggy I won you?
I still think of you often,
You were my first love.
Call me sometime.
I miss you.
Gregg

This is a youtube video of a helicoptor flying over Joplin, MO. This really put the destruction into perspective for me. There just aren't words!

Excellent NY Times article just up:

Death Toll Rises to Nearly 100 From Missouri Tornado
---
“It’s just overwhelming,” said Lois Richardson, 75, who moved to Joplin three years ago from California, where she survived several earthquakes. “I’ll take two earthquakes to one tornado any day,” she said. “There’s nothing that compares to a tornado.”

I have a dear friend who lives in Joplin and just found out this morning that he and his family are okay. I am so sorry for all those who perished.....:(

Does anyone know how far Ulman is from Joplin? I've tried to get a map but apparently, a lot of other folks are using the map features on Google...

Would Ulman be in/near Joplin?

This has been one of the worst years for tornadoes that I can ever remember. People were killed in Kansas and Minneapolis, as well, but what happened in Joplin is almost beyond comprehension. I am fervently praying for everyone there, in Jesus' Name, amen and amen!

Ulman, in south central MO, is a ways - three hours, 170 miles - away from Joplin, which is in the southwest corner of the state.

Thank you, WF...I don't know much about the region. This makes me feel a bit better...not that there is any "better" about this, but at least a friend (the breeder of my pup) is not in the path of this monster.

Keeping all in my prayers.

There are no words. Tornadoes scare me to death. Our home doesn't have a basement and the only interior room without an exterior wall is a teeny tiny coat closet. There is no way six people and three cats are going to be able to squeeze into such a small space.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this latest disaster.

Omg I live here in Joplin and luckily our apartment wasn't hit but came really close. My dad and stepmom lost their home but they are all ok. Scariest thing in my life. It looks like a horror movie out here and I'm sure the death toll will rise well over 100....I am just sick and numb but thankful that my family is all ok. I have never seen anything like this and I'm still in shock....

Praise the Lord you and your family are OK. I have been praying all day for Joplin and all of us in the "Prayer Thread" in the Jury Room have been praying as well! Godspeed all of you!

If there is anything you, or your Dad and step mom need, would you please let us know? I know there will be a lot of folks contributing in general, but if you guys need anything in particular that we could help with, please let us know.

And you, as well as the rest of Joplin, will remain in my prayers. May God shower His Love and Mercy on all of you.
