They assumed based on what they saw, but it's still technically a missing persons case to this date.
Right. Until they have significant reason to believe NG is the victim of a homicide, it will remain a missing persons case. So clearly (MOO) there was not enough blood evidence inside the home to reasonably indicate NG would be deceased. It's hard to have a "no body" homicide case & if this were to switch to homicide, I'd be extremely curious about the evidence that almost certainly would have to be brand new/freshly discovered.

Sooooo......Could the ransom note(s) be from someone, an insider, who was in the house investigating the abduction and knew details of the crime scene? Wouldn't you send a ransom request soon after the kidnapping? Why wait days?
Not necessarily someone investigating inside the house but someone close enough to hear rumours about the state of the crime scene (either through family or LE grapevine). There was a poster here a few days ago who said they were from a Tucson neighbourhood where a lot of LE live, and posted a theory based on the rumours circulating there (the post was deleted). By Monday when the notes were sent rumours were probably flying wildly, and this one might have happened to be true (since we heard from media that LE appeared to be taking the notes seriously, at least initially). So the first ransom note(s) could have been from someone who heard those rumours, either in real life or through social media, had enough knowledge to protect themselves from being caught easily, and took a chance.

Just another random thought from me:

A gemologist is not the same as a geologist.

"The home directly west of Nancy Guthrie's house"

So they mean the supposed gem house?
No - that's the house to the south on the same side. The videos that came out show it to be the house across the street but a little south.

Yes, those tiny keyring lights work very well for short distances. I used to have one and loved it. You can see the perp flash it on when he approaches the porch step, to make sure he doesn’t trip. In the pitch dark, it’s enough for that. He also uses it when dealing with the Nest doorbell cam.

A head torch can be used for hiking and walks on unlit roads. I’ve used mine for that. This is different. It’s a tiny thing that might illuminate a car door or front door to make key insertion easier.

In the video, the light seems to be offset, coming from the side of the mouth. Also, it looks like we see teeth, which may be part of a mesh mask. Hard to say. But we don’t see a typical flashlight or bite light (like the Illumibite) protruding from the mouth.
So you can only see something right in front of you. The up side is that it does not throw off enough light to be detected from afar, but the down side is you cannot see any distance.

Doesn't sound like a robber could use it to quickly examine a large house for valuables? Or for someone quickly hunting where victims are located in the house?
A flashlight or head light would be better.

So perhaps this is not a robbery and perp knows where NG is located in the home.

It sounds like he did not turn the power off, so perhaps he turned the lights on when he got inside. Which is risky. Neighbors might notice lights going on in the middle of the night. Of course lantana man could just be the outside look out. Never went into the house

So we might not even be talking about a regular bite light. Just a keyring light.
And we see it off kilter from his teeth. We don't know if the real teeth or fake teeth.

Has anyone seen any confirmation that there was an Uber driver or any talk of LE interview with that person?

Investigators hunting for leads in the search for Nancy Guthrie have asked people living in her neighborhood whether they noticed any disruptions to their internet connection on the night of her disappearance.

Both the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI were out canvassing in Guthrie’s neighborhood in the Catalina Foothills in Arizona on Thursday, going door to door talking to residents and asking if they noticed anything about their connectivity...

Nancy Guthrie Update as Former FBI Agent Points to ‘Good Sign’

"When agents canvass for doorbell and surveillance footage in the first 48 hours, they are working with a rough timeline – but timelines sharpen," Pack said. "As cell phone records come back, as Walmart purchase data is analyzed, as the suspect’s clothing gets traced through retail channels, the timeline tightens and suddenly a neighbor’s answer that seemed irrelevant three weeks ago becomes critical."

If I remember correctly, it either the last or second to last press conference. It was definitely both mentioned at the conference that there was an Uber driver and that they spoke with the driver.

Nanos would not discuss reports of a forced entry at the home as far as whether there was or was not a forced entry. He added that investigators have spoken to an Uber driver who took Nancy Guthrie to the residence of her daughter earlier on Jan. 31.

FBI searches home west of Nancy Guthrie’s house

The headline is misleading though. The FBI agents were seen in the garage and driveway after talking to several neighborhood residents. It appears they were not searching the interior of the home. I wish news wouldn't create sensational headlines just for clicks. JMO

Just catching up here and wanted to add two random things:

1. I have a friend in the jewelry industry who has attended the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show for numerous years. She said that items get stolen from the show ALL the time and that it's kind of free-for-all. In my personal opinion, if someone wanted gems, they could hit the show and steal there. Check out the videos of the show this year - people have backpacks, huge purses, etc. - and the show is HUGE size-wise. IMO, no need to rob NG's house (or any other house) for gems.

2. Has LE ever said one way or another that this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public? Personally, I feel feel this was likely a targeted act, but if I am wrong and the individual(s) responsible like to prey on the elderly, I'd hope LE would issue some kind of blanket statement to the general public. Maybe that's me asking too much.

All IMO.
I addressed this some time ago. No, they didnt issue anything that i am aware of and i looked. People here have said "well obviously people in the area knew there was this incident etc". Not good enough for me. Again, IMO, pay attention to what wasnt said by LE. JMO

From CNN
Guthrie took an Uber to her daughter Annie’s home around 5:32 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said. He said detectives have since interviewed the Uber driver, who the sheriff said is not under suspicion. The driver has been “very open” and shared video of Guthrie from inside their car, he added.

Elsewhere I recall they referred to the Uber driver as "she" but I didn't find that link with a quick search.

Yes, now that I had a chance to read it, I agree!

I had a keyring light like this but didn’t experiment with putting it in my mouth and talking ;-)

I think he’d have been able to talk and keep the light in his mouth behind a mesh mask, which would have minimised saliva drips.

It’s possible that he didn’t need to say much. He had a gun and could just have bundled her out of there using gestures and short phrases, removing the mask(s) and light only after reaching the car.
He doesn't need to talk much, if at all?

All he has to do is grab the victim and drag her out the front door. If she was sleeping she might not immediately know what is happening. Half asleep she could think it is a fireman or something, dragging her out of a burning house. Or some sort of emergency in the middle of the night.

She doesn't realize what is happening until she gets to the porch and then starts struggling.

I doubt he took off his disguise in front of her. He seemed hell bent on not being identified. He could have taken the top layer disguise off and revealed another disguise costume layer.

Even a bright, talented, highly educated non criminal is going to make mistakes. Like the vascular surgeon who killed the Tepe's.

I agree, we can no longer say that in the Guthrie case the perp is a kid, a druggie, an impulse crime, a street person, inexperienced, etc. You don't evade the FBI and 400 agents for this long if that were the case?

Most first time criminals, no matter how smart, make mistakes. So I am going to guess this is the not the first crime the guy has committed. At the least he had to do some dry runs, practice sessions.

Yes a methodical person. Meticulous about detail. Planned it carefully ahead of time. Often first time criminals plan the crime itself but not the exit plan. This guy planned it all looks like.

<modsnip>

The guy in this case is a careful thinker, but wider in scope that most deep thinkers. There are a lot of moving parts to this crime, many different pieces and he appears to have done well with all of them. Perhaps there is more than one person involved.

It wouldn't be the first time a suspect was found to be a neighbor. Time will tell.

Thanks for the welcome. I have been racking my brain trying to comprehend the why which might help lead to the who. I do think Nancy was specifically targeted and that some time and effort went into avoiding detection. I also speculate that the bad actor(s) are not the usual type, e.g. not cartel, not burglary gone wrong. It appears that whoever is behind this knows the territory/neighborhood - is comfortable in a place that is remote and dark so maybe someone nearby with an axe to grind? I just read on here that LE is going house to house in the neighborhood. Glad for this.

Bbm

I agree with the bolded.

The video of two LE walking back to their car via the driveway of NG’s neighbor’s house shows the house number on the mailbox of the neighbor, and it is the neighbor to the west (a bit southwest on her street, to be more precise).

I don't understand the gem situation in Tucson.

The daughter has gems, NG has gems, the neighbor has gems? Do most people have gems in this town?

There is a big gem show every year with large amounts of cash or bitcoin.

Are precious stones mined in the desert around Tucson? Did NG have a connection to mines? Are gem robberies common in Tucson?

NG’s late husband was a mining engineer.
