Charred remains in a shallow grave, according to BrowneyedEmily's link.

Horrible that she was killed, of course, but good he was dumb enough to move the body and bury it. Trace evidence should be in his vehicle, on his shoes, tires etc. Had to conceal the body in something from the apartment to carry it out, tire tracks, footprints at the secondary scene...this dude should be toast. Idiot.

I just received an alert from WRAL:

Authorities say they found charred remains Sunday in Snead's Ferry. More on WRAL.com and WRAL News at 11 pm.

I haven't been able to find any actual stories on it though.

EDIT: I found this link: http://www.jdnews.com/articles/ferry_58115___article.html/sheriff_human.html

Ok I am a little confused. Are they thinking this is Holley? Why I asked it seems the body was set afire this afternoon.

Where would they have her for this long before burning her body.

from the article linked above:

Two sources close to the investigation told The Daily News that investigators found bladed weapons with the body and that the body had been mutilated

I wonder if the mutilation was done post-mortem to deter identification. Interesting.

Okay, martin walkerdine. Score one point for the crazy serial killer copy-cat theory. I wasn't expecting mutilation. What do you make of this turn of events?

It sounds to me like they are pretty sure it's her, but have to wait until it's confirmed to say so.

It does sound like it was post mortem to deter identification along with burning the body. I wouldn't discount the ex yet though.

Well as far as I am concern he has to be the main suspect now. The body was found in Onslow County. That is where HE is stationed, in Jacksonville, N.C.

So he is stupid as dirt if he kidnapped her in Fayetteville and then took her body all the way back to where he was stationed to bury it.

But if he is guilty then thank goodness for his stupidity. I do wonder if she has been dead all this time since the burning of the body was done today.

Thanks, BrownEyedEmily for the link to jdnews:
Sunday, Division of Forest Resources personnel discovered the burned female remains when they responded to a fire about a mile off Old Folkstone Road. Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said the fire appeared to have been set in an effort to cover up the crime.

I guess the fire might have been set to try to make the grave blend in with the surrounding area...but it seems that it actually called attention to the crime scene. Emergency personnel would rush to a fire; it could be forever before someone accidentally stumbled on a shallow grave. It seems to me that they were not trying to hide the body...they were pointing it out.

I am still curious whether there is some strange attempt by these killer(s) to antagonize the Civilian Law Enforcement who are responsible for the areas near the bases? I mean...to burn and bury her in Sheriff Brown's back yard again? I am just wondering if there is some connection?

There sure is a lot of fire involved in these murders of women soldiers in North Carolina.

Asked why he thought they were Wimunc's remains, Hudson said, "Well, we have a lot of information, but I cannot share that with you at this time."
Officials responded to a call Thursday about the strong odor of gasoline at the Morganton Place Apartments in Fayetteville and found a smoldering fire that had burned two bedrooms. Police are calling it an arson and missing person's investigation.
"I feel confident that this case will end in an arrest," Hudson said. He later added that there could be more than one arrest.

Remains found near Lejeune may be missing soldier

Investigators suspect they have found the charred remains of Army 2nd Lt. Holley Lynn Wimunc, a Fort Bragg nurse who has been missing since Thursday, Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson said Sunday night.

Forestry officials workers fighting a brush fire in the Sneads Ferry area of Onslow County found a body in a shallow grave late Sunday afternoon, Hudson said. The site is near the southern border of Camp Lejeune Marine Base, where Holley Wimunc’s estranged husband, Marine Cpl. John Patrick Wimunc, is based.

“There was physical evidence that indicated the body had been there for a substantial period of time,” Hudson said.

The Jacksonville Daily News, citing unnamed sources, reported Sunday that investigators found “bladed weapons” near the body and that it was mutilated.

After learning late Sunday of the body near Camp Lejeune, Lana said she tried unsuccessfully to reach John to talk to him about it.

“I pray to god it’s not Holley,” she said.
