Lovette was still resentenced to life without parole. Prison is where he belongs. He is truely an animal. This case has always really bothered me, because they didnt have to kill her. They could have just dumped her off. It would have taken 30 minutes before she could have ever called the police and she never would have been able to ID them. They killed her just for fun, just to be mean. I don't think a person like that could ever be rehabilitated.

"You know, people make mistakes. Nobody's perfect. I'm not the monster that y'all made me out to be," Lovette said prior to Judge Allen Baddour's sentence. "I know that this has been a traumatic ordeal for everybody involved. For that, I send my condolences to everybody who's been affected by it. If it means anything to anybody, it means something to me."
I say....Yes you are a monster!.... More at link.

Also, it was proved in the trial that they abducted her from her house just after 3:30 A.M. and the 911 call about gunshots fired came in just after 5:00 A.M. so she was with these 2 monsters for an hour and a half as they drove around with her trying to get money out of ATM's. Pure horror for anyone! Still makes me sick after all these years, yet he says he is not a monster!!!!

I think it was all a lark to those two convicted murderers, Lori. As I said earlier, when Lovette held up & shot dead Mahato weeks earlier in Mahato's apt in Durham, it worked for him then (and he did get away with that one for while and still hasn't gone to trial or made a plea on it yet).

This time the two buds were indeed looking for a rich sorority student. I also think this lark was mainly Lovette's idea. I remember the ear-to-ear grin he had when he was using that ATM to get Eve's money from it.

They were about to close in on a different young woman as they stood in the shadows of a sorority house where they watched her while she was on the phone in her car in the sorority parking lot, but she saw them, got spooked, and drove off, thus making them go look for another.

And they walked about 50 yards or so down a little side street & saw little Eve on the sofa in her living room studying. So they paid her a visit with the cheap little .25 cal pistol and the "baby gauge." And her bank account balance was about $9,000. "Wow! we're cookin' now, dude."

Monster? He!! yes. For a second time.

Life without parole? He!! yes.:stormingmad:

"People make mistakes..." Well, people do make mistakes. They accidentally break their mother's favorite vase, they forget a sister's birthday, they may even impulsively cheat on a spouse. But they do not commit cold-blooded premeditated murder by mistake.

Borndem, this one hit me hard as at the time my own daughter lived blocks away from Eve's house and was the same age. They headed out into the dark streets for an easy mark...that poor sorority girl was very lucky that night as I believe they were about to abduct her before she spotted them and took off. Those two monsters and Eve could not be more different..she worked and studied hard and gave back to her community...they were bums and criminals and took from their community. Still is a case that upsets me and always will....

Oh, yes, I remember some of your remarks while the trial was going on, Lori... and another poster, NCB, had a daughter in UNC about the same time, too. I would spend a month or so in CHill with my aunt, uncle & cousins (I'm an only child & cousins are a big deal to me) every year, and I was familiar with the neighborhood where she was shot & left like a dog that night, and I was very familiar with downtown and the campus. My uncle was the pharmacist owned Sloan Drugs where Spanky's is/was.

Even in the summers, students had the run of the place, and since I went to NCSU, I was also nearby & would visit. I still can get around CHill very easily. How eerie it was for me to hear the name of those streets in that neighborhood where her bleeding body was found.

This is a very tuff one for me too, Lori, especially knowing that I prolly walked, shopped and ate in the same areas that Eve did.

This article may have already been posted, but it gives a bit of insight into Lovette's growing-up years. [I'm definitely not putting it here to try to provoke sympathy for that ~man~ in the courtroom, but rather to show that he had many advantages when he was growing up, and still he chose the path that led him to these things he has done.] He had quite a string of juvenile offenses according to the article... It's worth the read.

I'm not sure where else to put this -- it is not in connection with Eve Carson's case, but it does have to do with one of her killers, Laurence Lovette. He is accused of killing the Duke grad student Abhijit Mahato.

A recent article re his attys asking for a change of venue due to familiarity with the Eve Carson case. Nothing has been decided yet, but here is a recent article:
Lovette lawyers argue for murder trial outside Durham

Should we start a new thread for this trial, perhaps in Awaiting Trial about this?

Mods - any thoughts?

Thanks.

A jury on Wednesday acquitted Laurence Alvin Lovette on accusations that he robbed and murdered Mahato, a Duke University graduate student who was found dead in his Durham apartment on Jan. 18, 2008.

I'm confused. The verdict was announced in July. Did something happen in the meantime? I live in Durham and have not heard a peep about Atwater or Lovette in many months.

I cannot believe we are coming up on the eighth anniversary of Eve Carson's murder. It seems like yesterday to me. This time of year must be so hard for her loved ones. I am wishing for peace for her family and many friends.

It's horrible what happened to Eve and its horrible they didn't execute the both of them right after the trial.

Her family and Eve herself would disagree about execution.

I still think about her and about what this country lost when we lost Eve. I feel sure she would have done some great things -- she was just getting started.

My husband still won't even speak about it.

Both of those links are dead, but here's a link that still works, as of now.

"The mother of Eve Carson says the Durham Police Department failed the family of Abhijit Mahato with an incomplete investigation into his slaying. “Their faith is abused; Durham police and officials through their scant investigation grievously failed them,” Teresa Carson wrote in an email to The News & Observer on Thursday.
