New Zealand - White Island volcano erupts, 19 dead, many injuries from cruise excursion, 9 Dec 2019 *charges*

I had just read this article about the mood on the cruise ship after this happened. The article ended with "But most guests were on their phones, seeking information, trying to figure out how it suddenly could turn to horror." I appreciate the cost of these trips, but I truly can't imagine taking this opportunity, on the record no less, to express annoyance about my derailed travel agenda.

Shock aboard cruise ship after New Zealand volcano eruption

I saw that on TV. He is being held as a hero for his actions. He picked people up and put them into his helicopter as they were just laying there.
And he said a couple of people in his helicopter expired while he was flying them back to the mainland. :(

Brave and amazing actions.

He wants to go back in but the police won’t allow it, he knows where the bodies are because he placed them where they can be found including his mate from the tour company.

“Law said he would fly back immediately to recover the eight victims who remain on the island while police waited for clearance from experts to return. “It’s a bureaucracy,” he said. “I would get the bodies now if I was allowed.”
having discovered a friend, tour guide Hayden Marshall-Inman, dead when he was there.

“I came across a guy there I recognised. He was beyond help,” he told New Zealand’s TV3. “I just pulled him out from where he was and made him as comfortable as I could so he is there when we go back to get him.

“We would have loved to have gone back but we were instructed not to go back out. It was pretty hard to take.”

unreal
like the people who complain about amber alerts interrupting their lives

There is a guarantee that if you book a tour through the ship it will not leave without you if your are late back.
This is sadness on steroids.
I’ve been a few cruises and there have been a couple of medical emergencies where the ship has diverted to another port, the captain tells us all what’s happening and I never heard anyone whinge (publicly).

Paul Kingi left White Island by boat "moments before" the volcano erupted, according to long-time friend Rick Pollock, who heard the story from Mr Kingi directly.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Mr Pollock praises his friend as "nothing less than a hero" for going back to the island in dangerous conditions and helping numerous survivors onto his boat.
Photos taken by witnesses show crew members from White Island Tours, including a man believed to be Mr Kingi, bringing injured people to safety.

"He went back again and again, ignoring the toxic environment and personal risk, until he was satisfied there were no more obvious survivors remaining

Thank God for the wonderful people who responded to help those in need of care. They didn’t concern themselves with their own safety, just hopped to it and did what was needed to be done. Not by someone else, but by them. These people are true heroes for saving those they could. I can only imagine the horrible images they will carry with them the rest of their days....

Yes, I wonder if the red tape burocracy would be still there contemplating their navels.

I’m very proud of you Paul Kingi with love to you from across the ditch.

Watson says 22 of the 30 patients in hospital still need airway support. The nature of the burns suffered is complicated by the gases and chemicals in the eruption. This has necessitated more rapid treatment than is normally the case for thermal-only burns, he says.

He gives a breakdown of the number of patients at each hospital:
  • Eight at Christchurch hospital
  • Seven patients are at Middlemore hospital in Auckland
  • Six at Waikato hospital
  • Four at Hutt hospital near Wellington
  • Two at Auckland city hospital
  • Two at Tauranga base hospital
  • One at Wellington hospital. That person is in the process of being transferred to Sydney.
Doctors have “almost” completed full identification of who they are, says Dr Peter Watson, chief medical officer at Counties Manukau.

..... operating theatres are working 24 hours a day to treat the injured.

Disaster victim identification specialists are standing by to identify bodies, Tims says. Police will release the names of the missing shortly, with details to be published online.

The Australian Defence Force will soon be arriving to repatriate injured Australians, he says.

"The following is a list of nine people who are not either in hospital or who have not been discharged. These people are listed officially as missing. This is not a complete list of the missing as we have been unable to speak with all next of kin involved. "

UPDATE: Whakaari / White Island volcanic eruption

Two are NZers ... Gavin and another ... possibly both tour guides?

Thoughts are with all of the families and friends. :(

TV News flash: First Aussie hospitalised person has arrived back in Australia tonight. Being admitted to a burns unit here. Ten more Aussie hospitalised people are supposed to be coming back to Australia tomorrow (or soon) to be admitted to burns units here.

Our armed services are flying them home.

New Zealand has ordered 19,000 sq ins (1.2 million sq cm) of skin from America to help victims of the volcano eruption on White Island.”

“A total of 29 patients have been admitted to hospital with burns in the wake of Monday's deadly eruption, and doctors say they urgently need more skin grafts.“

“Faced with an unprecedented number of burn victims and the unusual nature of the burns from toxic volcanic gases, surgeons are having to work quicker than usual.”

“It is predicted surgeons have 500 hours of operations to perform on patients in the days and months ahead of them.”

Today's medical technology is amazing ... offering hope for these badly injured people and their families.
