I'll tell you something. I did lose some respect for Hillary Clinton as a person for staying with Bill after he had betrayed her and humiliated her so publicly like he did. Am I the only one who feels that way?

We don't know her heart but standing by her husband for a press release was a public act of solidarity.
This man prosecuted people involved in prostitution rings so even if the "open marriage" theory was true, prostitution is illegal. He's the governor of the state for crying out loud he's supposed to uphold the law. The "hard time" he is going through is of his own making. He chose it and brought shame on his family.
And they have daughters. No way would I be "standing by my man" and giving that example to my daughters that this is the kind of crap you have to put up with in marriage.

Report: Spitzer trying to cut deal to avoid criminal charges

NEW YORK - As Gov. Eliot Spitzer prepares to leave office, the disgraced politician faces a tangled battle with prosecutors that will send lawyers into murky legal territory. A law enforcement official said Spitzer's high-powered defense team was believed to be negotiating a plea deal with prosecutors over his connection to a high-end prostitution ring, but attorneys were not commenting Thursday about the discussions.

The legal battle occurred as Lt. Gov. David Paterson prepared to take over the state following Spitzer's spectacular fall from power. Paterson said he spoke to Spitzer on Thursday and "told him how sorry I was this happened." "I promised the governor yesterday that I would commit myself to the people of this great state, that we would have stability and continue in these challenges that lie ahead," Paterson said. "Now we have to get New York back on track."

Paterson takes over on Monday, and will become New York's first black governor and the nation's first legally blind chief executive.

Spitzer, a married father of three teenage girls, faces a much more dubious future after he was accused of spending tens of thousands of dollars on prostitutes - including a tryst with a 22-year-old call girl in Washington the night before Valentine's Day. Officials said Spitzer initially drew the attention of authorities with suspicious money transfers that will be a key part of any possible criminal case.

Whether she decides to call it quits on her marriage and leaves with the kids,to persue life on her own - or - decides to fight like hell for her marriage,because she feels it's worth saving...either way I think that makes her a strong woman. To stand by what she believes she has to do,and goes with it.

I wouldn't trust the motives of either one of the Spitzers as far as I could throw them. That's just my opinion after hearing that she wanted him not to resign after comitting illegal acts. I agree with Lisa Bloom that these political high profile women publicly standing by men like this while they whine and lie about beign caught is demeaning to women. Spitzer is also taking advantage of a very young woman who was abused as a child. He's no better than some hillbilly paying for sex with a $10 crack . The girl may make big money, but she's still a prostitute and damaging herself.

She may have been speaking as a lawyer at the time rather than a wife...Maybe she wanted him to trade his resignation for dropping of the criminal charges? I heard a felony conviction is an automatic disbarrment in NY.

I watched this womans face closely as her husband was speaking. There came a time when he said something about his love for her and her eyebrows went up. No other facial expression it seemed, before or after that. I even rewound and watched again. Oh, and did any of you see when the car got to their home? She dashed out of it and ran inside leaving him in the dust.

Can you imagine how Mrs. S must feel?
It would be bad enough for any woman to find out her husband was sleeping with hookers.
But to be the wife of a well known Governor.
A wife who had her own estasblished career, who's done hours of volunteer work! A woman who ended her career so she could raise her children.

How is Mrs. S handling this with the kids?
How does a woman not let this tear her completely apart?

One of my bf's husband had an affair that lasted 6 years. For 6 years my friend thought their marriage was good. Then the apple fell off the apple cart. My friend was devasted.

I speak from someone who is walking in similar shoes as Mrs Spitzer.. unless you have been there you wont know what you will do.. you can think you will do one thing but its a complicated and heart rending issue that is not as easy as it would seem..even more so when you are caught completely off guard. She is not a fool by doing what she thought is right at that moment at that time.. don tforget there are many there advising her.. there may be much more to her appearance then you know and likely a lot that has to do with her daughters.. it seems to me anyone who can easily throw more stones at someone who is already in the most diffcult time of their lives and hasnt been there is the foolish one...

And it seems to me that you are making a lot of assumptions about someone whom who don't know. You have no idea whether I've "been there" or not, and that is irrelevant anyway. We are discussing Silda Spitzer not me.

I think she may have not known the full extent of it during that first appearance at his side. Looked like she knew a little more at the second appearance but maybe not everything.

What else can she do at this stage other than put up a front until she figures things out? I'm sure she didn't want to see him resign as she will lose lots of her standing in society also.

Boy - I was just going to type almost these exact words. So all I can say is ditto!

While none of us know her reasons for standing beside him this last week - I have a feeling part of it was due to the fact that he is the father of her daughters- and that she was doing it more for them than him. Just my opinion. I have great regard for her and I think she'll come through this better than he ever will.

This is the very reason I would not be standing by his side. There is no way I would suggest to my daughters that being humiliated, cheated on, dis-respected and lied to by a father and/or husband is anything a self respecting person would put up with.

I feel bad for Silda. I do know that she will be ok though. She is a educated,beautiful & smart lady! I know she feels heartbroken right now and that pain will eat at her for awhile. I know only time can ease that pain but she will be ok.

I was watching Gov.McGreevey's wife on a talk show this morning and she was asked why she stood next to him when he gave his ''speech''..She said she did it for her daughter so later in life her daughter will not ask her ''mom why weren't you there for dad when he was going through that hard time in his life?''.. Sooo I don't know maybe that is why they stand by their man? :waitasec:
