I've never owned a kayak before, but I do have a fishing boat.

Can anybody that has experience with one explain how it could be tampered with so that

A) The boat would capsize easily

B) A healthy person in the Kayak would be unable to free themselves from it, even if it did flip upside down.

Final question: Could a kayak be tampered with in that fashion so that an experienced kayaker wouldn't notice it ?

Thanks

Stuck on what could be her motive?
Does not appear she would gain from insurance or other $$
No mention that he was some kind of control-freak she wanted to escape from.
Assisted suicide - far fetched.
Argument and he went into the water and she didn't help?

My guess has been anger/rage.

Prosecutors: Geaswald admitted tampering with Vincent Viafore's kayak so he'd capsize, watched him go under, 'felt a sense if happiness'

WTH!!!???!!! You're kidding me. I had no idea the evidence would be that damning. Lord above.

Is she crazy? Wow. I am stunned. Why would she say that? Why would she do that?

(Got my continuance so I will be able to follow a bit). Gobsmacked really.

When the couple was about two-thirds of the way back, "the victim's kayak filled with water, causing it to capsize," Mohl said. "The victim was holding onto the kayak...he went under water and drowned," around 7:15 p.m.

Graswald did not call for help until 7:40 p.m., Mohl said. Graswald said she could see Viafore while on the phone, and the call was cut off when she herself capsized.

Witnesses say they saw Graswald "intentionally" capsize, and when she was questioned about inconsistencies in her statements, "she said she capsized her kayak on purposely," because she wanted authorities to believe she tried to save Viafore, Mohl said. "She stated that she tampered with the victim's kayak...she knew it would contribute to his death."

She told authorities she "felt happiness and relief" as she watched him go into the water, Mohl said. Graswald said "it felt good knowing he was going to die," and that she felt trapped in the relationship with him.

Agreed.
Also, why would her attorneys be so adamant that she be released or even given bond IF she admitted to all that? What am I missing?

Good questions. This is just so odd. And it doesn't explain a lot. Why wasn't he wearing a life jacket? Did he try to swim? He's a strong swimmer so how did a capsize kill him when she survived the same? Was he drugged? Is she just delusional and something totally different happened? This is so odd!

I don;t get this.

I think they had no idea of any of that until the bail hearing. Demanding a bail hearing before arraignment is a tactic to get a jump on what the prosecution has evidence-wise. The prosecution likes to hold back their evidence as along as possible to prevent the defendant from having a lot of time to creating alternate scenarios/explanations to mitigate the evidence.

Totally chilling. Remember I said how her photo gave me the chills/creeps? I think my gut was operating on this one. So, so terrifying that a guy could be sleeping with a human like that and never know until too late.

Twisted.

I have a boat like that. There is a plug on the front tip to allow you to drain it by turning it over. They mention the plug was missing, but imo that would not flood the boat.

He is experienced, he should have know if he was filling with water. At such a time I would never attempt the crossing. Hypothermia may have begun while he was paddling.

The only other thought I had about tampering, is that there appears to be a covered hatch on his boat. She could have filled it with rocks, unbeknownst to him. He may have been drugged also.

I'm glad there were witnesses. :jail:

BBM. I suspect this may be the case as well.

B) A healthy person in the Kayak would be unable to free themselves from it, even if it did flip upside down.

If the boat flipped, you would just fall out. According to statement, he was clinging to the boat.

Why couldn't he hold on to the kayak??? He was a big man and strong swimmer. He must've been drunk or drugged.

If the kayak filled with water, how come they found the kayak right away but haven't found him??

I wonder if they went out or had a few drinks before going out on the water? She could have put something in his drink or food.
