One other thing I noticed. His Mom has many LE friends. Yup.
It was on the way back from Bannerman Island, where the couple stopped off, that Ms. Graswald called 911 at 7:40 to report that Mr. Viafore had capsized. The police say Ms. Graswald waited nearly a half-hour to call after Mr. Viafore went into the frigid water – a detail that presumably came from her.
“It is also alleged that she moved the paddle away from him as he was struggling to stay afloat with water temperatures in the 40 degree range,” read a statement from the district attorney’s office.
Prosecutors have also said that Ms. Graswald intentionally capsized her own kayak to make it look as though she had tried to save him. A person with firsthand knowledge of the rescue said that members of a local boat club were alerted to the couple’s distress, and that as they approached, they saw her throw herself into the water.
Then there are the Facebook posts, in which Ms. Graswald is seen days after Mr. Viafore’s disappearance smiling broadly in selfies, playing with her cat, visiting an animal shelter and doing a cartwheel. Whether they will be admissible at trial is uncertain, however.
“It depends on the judge,” said Jeanine F. Pirro, a former Westchester County district attorney and host of Fox News Channel’s “Justice With Judge Jeanine.” “The prosecution will say it’s inconsistent with the behavior of someone whose fiancé just died. And the defense will say, ‘Wait a minute, maybe she’s just blowing off steam.’”
Two further, almost completely o/t, 'gloaming' references....The reporter gets extra bonus points!
new from NYT:
Minus Physical Evidence in Kayak Case, a Focus on Suspect’s Statements
....^^ lengthily interesting
Yes. So why didn't they use those easy terms?
Gloaming reminds me of Loch Lomend.
They are the Hudson Highlands.

May Mary Ann Viafore and friends prevail. xo
I respect and understand the views here; I just got chills watching her speak about it. The media links are in the first pages.
Word of the Day?
The culture/language thing is of concern... know any Russian women? I believe some will sometime say things completely opposite the way they feel.
Anyway, the kind of confession I would want would have her giving facts and details that can be verified.

I love it. I wish all reporters would get above a 5th grade reading level in their articles.I think it's a nice word. Old fashioned but I've heard it before, especially in poetry. However, although I thought it had something to do with misty darkness, I didn't know the definition until I read it here.
Me too. Something about her creeps
me out. But aside from that, this isn't a small, backwoods force, for example, pressured to solve a case or harboring an innate prejudice against Latvian Russians. There is no hint of corruption surrounding this force. The incident was treated as an accident and would've been left there but for the statements of Graswald. There was zero motivation for LE to coerce a confession. It's illogical.
So her culture evidences she meant the opposite of "I tampered with his kayak. I felt trapped. I moved his paddle from his reach. I felt happy and a sense of relief as I watched him drown." ??
