OH - Three students killed in Chardon High School shooting, 27 Feb 2012

As our justice system now steps in here and we move to the courts, I have to say this.

In cases like these, where we know FOR A FACT, that this kid is the shooter, justice should be swift. Period. He did it. I understand all about innocent until proven guilty. I'm willing to bet the shooting is on camera. We have eye witnesses, he confessed, there is no "innocent until proven guilty" here. He did it.

Now, we will waste thousands of dollars on this and heaven forbid, he decides he wants a trial - costs even more.

Why? He did it. Sentence him. Lock him up. Its over. Just that quick. I really believe that in cases like this - the wheels of justice should move fast. But, instead, he will linger in jail and have court date after court date after court date and maybe even a trial after a couple of years have passed. Why? Why put the victim's families through all that?

He did it. Its over.

Yesterday there were some reports of 10 shots. I also heard somewhere that the 22 was a semi-automatic so does that mean it would hold more bullets?
JMHO

I'm not an extreme gun buff so maybe someone else can answer, but my understanding is that semi auto matic just refers to the way it's reloaded. It uses the energy from one shot to load the next. The spent casing is ejected and the new round automatically loaded so it can be fired again immediately. It would rely on a magazine (stored in the grip of the gun) that housed the bullets.

I can't find anything specific on just how many bullets a semi auto .22 pistol would hold, but I think typical is 6-8 ?

I honestly would be shocked to see anything but a plea in this case. He will plea to a lesser charge for a reduced sentence. Unless, of course, they go with the insanity route. The lawyer has to know there is NO way of getting him tried as a juvi.

Historically, most school shooters who shoot multiple victims turn the gun on themselves so there isn't alot of court cases to look back to.

The family attorney's statement and his comments about the suspect are classic lawyer-speak. The shootings were "something that could never have been predicted". There's the use of the passive voice..."try to understand how such a tragedy could have occurred"...."a very scary circumstance that I don't think he could have possibly even foreseen himself in the middle of".

The "tragedy" simply "occurred" and the suspect just happened to find himself "in the middle of" it with a smoking gun. A very scary circumstance indeed!

The psychiatrists will line up soon to give their "opinions", and the insanity defense will follow. Poor kid, he was bullied and just snapped one morning.
Either that, or someone stole his girlfriend. That could make any kid want to kill a bunch of people.

I'm so tired of the hand-wringing over the suspects in these incidents. I hope the media keeps the focus on the victims and the heinousness of this crime. I don't want to hear about how "confused" and "scared" this young killer is.

I understand that this was senseless and a tragedy and so many people are angry right now, but we don't know what was going on in this kid's head. CLEARLY there was some sort of lack of reasoning that would allow him to think something like this would be okay. I fully believe that he could be scared and very confused, as even at age 17, some kids do not fully understand the ramifications of their actions. I am not defending his actions what so ever and I do think he should be published to the fullest extent.

I also just want to say, this could be any one of our kids! You can hope your know your child, but I don't think anyone ever does. It is not just the family saying they couldn't have predicted it, but the friends and people interviewed have said the same, save for a few FB posts. I have seen teens quoting dark and depressing lyrics on FB more than once. It certainly doesn't mean they are all going to commit a school shooting, and I'm guessing a good 99% of them are never reported.

Yesterday I found out my 10yo daughter STOLE some money from a donation jar at school. Her teacher was the one to call and tell me. Now I know this is in no way close to a school shooting, but I would NEVER EVER have thought she would have done something like that. In fact, just last Thursday we had teacher's conferences and the teacher said she was a 'model student'. Our kids do things that we would never imagine them to do, nor do we understand.

I understand that you are angry, but I very much believe this shooter could be confused, very scared and remorseful.

I just heard this on my local noon news.

It seems these 3 boys were the ones he targeted and the other two were hit by stray bullets.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families. Such a senseless crime.

I agree there is no way he will be tried as a juvenile. Not at his age. Maybe if he was under 13. I don't think he'll plea, though. Because I don't think it will be offered. He killed two, maybe three people and tried to kill several. He will get life, IMO.

I wonder what goes through a young person's mind when they are about to do something like this. Did he think he would run afterwards and get away with it? Did he plan on killing himself? Did he think about life in prison? How do they think something like this is supposed to end?

I guess it doesn't matter now. His life is finished. These are decisions that can never be undone.

I was afraid that there would be three dead by this afternoon....
I think those three were all shot in the head correct?

Then the one (Nick Walczak) who was shot multiple times and near the heart is in serious condition... (multiple times, by stray bullets?)
Then the girl is stable...

Hopefully this is the last of the fatalities... but I do worry about that other boy.

There were five victims and reports say NW has several gun wounds. So if the gun had only 6 to 8 shots, it could be that the only reason he stopped shooting was because he was out of ammo?

BBM: respectfully, mrsu, I am sure you will teach your daughter that what she did was wrong & there's no excuse for it. You will make it a teaching lesson. Bless you!

Too bad the shooter did not have this support in his life. Seventeen IMHO is old enough to know what is good & what is evil or in the least have a basic understanding that MURDER is wrong.

Three dead, and who knows if the others will survive.

I really hope there's no plea deal or that he's tried as a juvenile and walks free in a few years. Now THAT would be a "tragedy".

The one shot near the heart and multiple times was one of the 3. I think he tried to jump under the table and TJL just pointed the gun under the table and pulled off rounds.

The only 2 still alive are a boy that was shot in the leg and the girl that was shot in the butt. I do believe both of them will be ok. She was in stable condition yesterday and the boy in serious (maybe hit an artery). It was the 3 in critical that were all sitting at the table.

I should add that as i have stated I just have a gut feeling this kid is a different type of shooter. I will reserve full opinion until we learn more about him. At this point is seems he may not have a record of trouble with the law. Or we don't know as he is a Juvenile. None of the students who seemed to have known him over several years said he had brushes with the Law. Then again maybe they just didn't know. I would like to know also what prompted him attending a school for at risk kids?

MetroHealth Medical Center confirmed a third student, Demetrius Hewlin , has died following a shooting rampage at Chardon High School that ended with five shot and one under arrest.
His family made the following statement:
“We are very saddened by the loss of our son and others in our Chardon community. Demetrius was a happy young man who loved life and his family and friends. We will miss him very much but we are proud that he will be able to help others through organ donation. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.“

I wonder this too. Very sad. I do wonder why he didn't commit suicide and instead turned himself in?
