Slain Bend Woman's Friends Start Memorial Fund

Friends and co-workers of Lori "Woody" Blaylock, a Bend woman missing and allegedly slain by her husband, have begun a memorial fund to help with family costs and other expenses, a colleague said Saturday.

Donations can be made to the "Lori 'Woody' Memorial Fund' at any branch of Wells Fargo Bank, said Kelly Fletcher.

But amid the tears and smiles Thursday came difficult news from police: Due to impending snowfall and rough terrain, the search for Blaylock's body along the North Santiam River has ended, at least for now.

In a break from string of hostilities dating back to the May election campaign, District Attorney Mike Dugan has announced that his successor DA-elect Patrick Flaherty will serve as a special prosecutor on the high profile Lori Blaylock murder case. Blaylock’s husband, Steven, was arrested last week and charged with killing his wife whose body has not yet been found.

My sister is a very close friend of Lori Wright-Blaylock. Here is another photo of Lori, taken two years ago at my sister's 50th BD party.

ETA: Her nickname, "Woody" comes from a mechanic's coverall that she used to wear while riding her bike to work. The coverall had a name patch with the name "Woody" on it. My sister says that nobody knew who the original owner of the coverall was.

"Woody" and Steven Blaylock were only dating for a couple of months before they were married.

They had met each other because they had similar knee-surgeries. Since Steven was an unemployed carpenter, he didn't have any health insurance. He was also homeless, and was a "couch surfer" (i.e., one who sleeps on the sofas of various friends until he wears out his welcome and moves to another friend's home). Woody and Steven started dating, and he later began living at her home. My sister indicated that the marriage was probably just a means of getting him onto her health insurance plan.

My sister says that she was very surprised when they got married right away because the relationship was fairly volitile right from the start. They had broken up and gotten back together on several occasions. On those occasions, she would kick him out of her home but she would always eventually relent and let him back into her home.

The day after Woody went missing, Steven was speaking with a friend at a local bar and casually stated that Woody was missing. He explained that they had an argument, and Woody had just walked out of the home. The friend asked Steven if he had reported her missing, and he said no. He said that she would eventually come home. The friend immediately knew that this didn't make sense because Woody would never walk out of her own home. On previous occasions when they fought, Woody would always kick Steven out of the house. She wouldn't have walked out of her own home and left him there.

Steven never did report her missing. She was reported missing by her employer (St. Charles Medical Center), where she worked as a respiratory therapist. She was a very dependable employee and never failed to show up for work without calling in beforehand.

CarlK, condolences to your sister (and you) on the loss of her friend, Lori. It's hard enough to lose someone under "normal" circumstances. Thank you for sharing what Lori was like.

IDANHA, Ore. – Marion County sheriff's deputies have located a body in the Santiam River near the city of Idanha.

The spokesperson said the body "could be" that of Lori J. Blaylock, a Bend woman who was reported to be last seen by her husband Oct. 28. The body was found on the Marion County/Linn County line, in an area just off of the North Santiam Highway.

Authorities Belive -- But Not Sure -- It's Bend Murder Victim

IDANHA, Ore. -- Linn County sheriff’s divers tried Sunday to recover a body, possibly of Bend murder victim Lori “Woody” Blaylock, from the swift-running North Santiam River, but the faster current made it unsafe and they had to abandon the effort, officials said.
..................
Recent rains have caused the river to rise two feet, while the discharge flow from Detroit Reservoir more than doubled in a day, from 2,200 cubic feet per second Saturday to almost 5,000 cfs Sunday, Thompson said.

Divers decided to enter the water to search Sunday morning, but despite repeated efforts, the current made it unsafe and they had to give up the effort, for now, Thompson said.

It was pretty warm today and not raining much. But on Saturday we had a lot of rain so the rivers are quite high. It's raining right now and the wind is blowing on top of it all.

My sister spoke to a mutual friend (of Woody and Her). The friend had spoken with Woody's sister and was told that LE went back to the location where the kayakers had spotted the body and it is no longer there. Apparently, the high currents of the river had dislodged the body from where it was located.

Wait a minute... so they HAD a body, but it was too hard to get it so they let it go? Seriously? Please tell me that I am missing something here. I understand being unable to retrieve it... But there was no way to secure the body until they could get to it?! :banghead:

They are worried about someone else seeing the body and being traumatized... what about not finding the body again for another 2 months?! OMG. :banghead:

Snipped by me...

I can answer that one...

In 1984 a guy she dated off and on for 10 years gave her the coveralls from his workplace. The name on them was Woody.

As my sister understands it, the kayakers spotted it on their way through and reported the location to LE after they had reached the end of their course, but it is not clear whether LE actually located the body themselves. It was in a very remote inaccessible area and water levels were a few feet above their normal levels. They wouldn't have been able to station someone in that location overnight to keep an eye on the body with no lighting and not even a safe place to stand for an extended period of time.

But by the time they reached the location reported by the kayakers, the body was no longer there.

I should have said that nobody knows who the "Woody" who originally owned the coveralls was. Based on the facebook post, her ex-boyfriend's name was "Tracy Forrest"
