Oscar Pistorius’s brief punishment sends a dangerous message

Because we don’t place a high enough value on women’s lives, we reinforce the entitlement men feel to act on the variety of reasons often used to justify violence and abuse: drink, drugs, peer pressure, having more money than sense, being young, feeling jealous, wanting their right to see their kids, what their victim was wearing, doing or saying.

With jailed paralympian Oscar Pistorius’s imminent release, the Progressive Women’s Movement of SA (PWMSA), which was instrumental in getting his first parole blocked, has voiced its disappointment over his release.

Convener of the PWMSA Jacqui Mofokeng told The Star on Friday morning that his sentence of five years was not enough and only serving 11 months was a travesty. “We respect the rule of law but it does not mean we are happy about this decision.”

She said the PWMSA was looking forward to November 3, when the State would ask the Supreme Court of Appeal to set aside Pistorius’s conviction on culpable homicide. “We will be there and we won’t be quiet… his happiness will be short-lived

BIB - sounds quite threatening!

"If he breaches the conditions of his correctional supervision he’ll be given 3 written warnings and after a third warning he’ll be taken back to prison."

That sounds pretty lenient. I think here in the States, one gets a single chance, that's it. If you break parole once, then back you go. THREE written warnings?

Psychologist Dr Lore Hartzenberg said she asked OP in one of her consultations with him what he’d like to do in the future. He replied that he wants to teach poor children at his uncle's school in rural Mozambique when "all this is over".

"… I said one day when all this is over, how would you like to live? He said to me that his uncle had a school in Mozambique and nothing would make him happier than to go work with the children in that rural school”.

The conditions of his release from prison won’t allow him to leave SA. Working for members of the family wouldn’t constitute community service so it will be interesting to see what sort of work offers come his way. I’m sure Uncle Arnold will be calling in favours in this regard if he’s given the chance but I’d like to think Correctional Services choose something they consider appropriate, not the family.

BIB on the one hand you have Aunty saying this is a life sentence, and on the other hand Pistorius himself refers this like a dose of man flu which he will get over. Appalling.

The sad part is that the usa is just as blind and pathetic. Remember the affluenza rich kid who killed 4 and critically injured 2. But he only got 2 years at a reform place.

I'm surprise that judge wasn't set on fire by now. Also the parole violations are usually not significant unless the person is a career criminal or the violation is huge. Other than that it is pretty much considered the Lindsey Lohan violation. Mess up and still get plenty of chances with maybe 30 days behind bars.

Ah don't worry about it. She probably never even said it. The media embellish things related to the killer all the time remember.

Now that's very true!!

June said the appeal was a matter for state prosecutors rather than her family. “This is now their job. They’re not happy with the verdict and sentence because they feel there were mistakes made. It’s not really going to affect me. It’s going to affect Oscar maybe but that’s not my business.”

She said the prosecutor had been hugely disappointed by Masipa’s verdict. “He did his utmost best. He’s devastated now, Gerrie Nel, but I can only say that he pulled his guts out for Reeva. He always spoke of her and he was doing his best. He did the best job anybody could do.”

Nel choked up at the end of the trial. It was painfully obvious that he really cared that there was justice for Reeva. Unfortunately it was not to be. I only hope the appeal rectifies all that was wrong about Masipa’s judgment and sentence.

Let Oscar be at home for the next 13 days, but [on] 3 November we are hopeful that the national prosecution, together with women, are going to be at the front of the court. We are going to make sure that he doesn’t come out.”

Mofokeng believes Pistorius should have been convicted of murder and imprisoned for at least 15 years.

Killer Oscar Pistorius turns to his clubs: Blade Runner hopes to become star golfer

KILLER athlete Oscar Pistorius is hoping to launch a lucrative golf career when he is freed from prison this week.

Sources close to OP say he will hit the fairways after concerns over his future on the track. He’s banned from professional athletics during his five-year sentence, the remainder of which he will serve under licence.

“Justice chiefs in South Africa cannot stop him from competing in golf tournaments as he is effectively free to come and go from his home as he pleases.”

Is the BIB from an OP source? If so, and if correct, it appears that special treatment is being meted out yet again. Remember how all the lawyers and Kelly Phelps said how tough correctional supervision is. This statement bears absolutely no relationship to what was previously put out, i.e. attend church, community service, no lunches or holidays and not being allowed to compete in events or travel.

A family source said he has a handicap of 18 and loves golf. “He is still an amateur but may go pro in time if he can gain sponsorship and support.

If he's virtually free to come and go from his home as he pleases, all I can say is I’m totally shocked, speechless and disgusted. Will the family still be saying he's getting singled out for special treatment. Of course not, only when it suits them. As they said previously, and I'll say it here ... he should be treated like any other prisoner (granted correctional supervision).

I really do hope that this is not correct, because it certainly wouldn't be right. In fact, to me it would be like taking the p ss out of Reeva Steenkamp's death if he is out enjoying himself on a golf course. I think it must be false but if not, there will be a huge public outcry if he is spotted and photographed out and about pursuing leisure activities. And disgust, both with the law that allows it and with the killer himself. Maybe so much disgust that someone will whack him over the head with a golf club.

Pistorius golfing?

Don't worry JJ – he has no chances of getting sponsorship. How can OP be an investable commodity for any advertiser for years and years to come? A Sponsored OP? It's like an oxymoron.

Re C.Supervision. Remember Dadic saying that even track training may well not constitute as work under the CS criteria. So how will golf training class? If he is planning to practise in the grounds of Waterkloof – good luck with that! He'll be lucky if he hits a paparazzi.

If the source is credible, it doesn't really surprise me. Par for the course that OP should come out with something else that is totally inappropriate. He is bad-timing personified, as are all the family.
I had a quick look, here is OP in 2012 golfing/doing some PR whilst golfing.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/ot...Dunhill-Links-Sprinter-terrified-dancing.html

“'My golf is rubbish at the moment and I've got quite a dodgy game as it is. Yesterday I shot 88 or 89 and today (in his final practice round) I shot closer to triple digits. 'My golf is rubbish at the moment and I've got quite a dodgy game as it is. Yesterday I shot 88 or 89 and today (in his final practice round) I shot closer to triple digits.'

And talking about retiring, not because he's already peaked of course
The man known as 'Blade Runner' is aiming for the 2016 Games in Rio and then possibly one more year of competition after that.

He added: 'I'll be 30 then, so it's fairly early for a sprinter, but I've been running since I was 17 and internationally since 2007.
'It's a very demanding career and I would like to get involved in other aspects of my life, in humanitarian work and family life.'

http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport..._a_modest_golfer_but_an_engaging_personality/
In this one he is blowing smoke up the Scots journalist, OP with a handicap of 18.
“but the most striking thing about him is not his physical prowess but his radiant personality. He really is one of those rare fellows who can light up a room with a smile. "I would like to say I would just like to have fun this week, but ultimately I'm a fierce competitor, so I would like to do well too.............*My golf has not really improved much to be honest. It's probably the same as it was seven or eight years ago, but I have one or two good shots."

Fighting talk huh? That's what has got him in trouble from day one.

There is no way anyone is going to sponsor him. He is dreaming.

Tiger Woods lost all his sponsors and he didn't kill anyone. He cheated on his wife with multiple women and they dropped him like a hot potato. And he was the world champion golfer. And the Pistorius family thinks their convicted killer is going to get sponsors?:giggle:

All very interesting. If the story is true I think there will be trouble stored up for him. I cannot imagine most SAs accepting this as a possibility.

Before signing in this morning I have been reading various new articles (none worthy of a link) but in the comments of one somebody described the charade as "the p*ss takius case". How true!

Briiliant.

Looks like all the wags with humour are on the correct side!

Sorry, can't delete my double-post earlier.

At this point OP knows the terms of his "house arrest". He would have been told last week. From various comments from the family or friends it seems that he may have been given very light rules by which to abide, ie he may be playing golf, training, and virtually no restrictions on his movements. I have also read today that house arrest is very unlikely to last for the whole 4 years.

One point I do find slightly odd is that he has been undergoing anger management. Isn't this the man who denied he had an anger problem and I don't recall the social workers finding this or has my memory failed me? So, has he let himself down whilst inside and has it been noted he does indeed have a problem that needs treating? Too bad Masipa didn't latch on to his inability to control himself.

Pistorius may turn to golf

Office of Chief Justice has issued statement saying video feed will be allowed in SCA during #OscarPistorius appeal on 3 November.

"We have noted the requests for camera access into the courtroom, in line with Practice Notice 1/2009 section 6, a pool feed system will be utilized to reduce disruptions inside the courtroom. This will also apply to photographers. As such it is imperative that those requesting to have video feed inside the courtroom attending a meeting on Wednesday, 21 October 2015, at the Supreme Court Appeal, in Court A, Bloemfontein, 10h00."

Some clarity now on video feed for #OscarPistorius appeal in SCA - there will be video pool in court but no decision yet on LIVE feed.
Officials saying there've been no applications for LIVE broadcast of #OscarPistorius appeal. Meeting to take place on Wednesday to discuss.
So in short - you'll probably be able to see footage of lawyers in court but won't actually be able to follow arguments live. Usual for SCA.
