Oscar Pistorius - Discussion Thread #64 ~ the appeal~

I think it is a safe bet he will get drunk behind "high walls". He will have to be very careful for the first few months because people will be "gunning" for him (please excuse the pun). Even if the SC change the verdict it is unlikely, now he is out on parole, that he immediately will be incarcerated. He will no doubt appeal and be allowed to remain "at home" until such time as the appeal is heard. I have no idea how long it takes to get an appeal heard in the Constitutional Court of SA.

Think they will definitely be gunning for him with one of those long zoom lens! No idea how bad the SA papparazzi are, if it was the UK they would have drone cameras flying over the Waterkloof pool in a jiffy!

Also, most people now have smart phone cameras which means when he is outside, playing golf, he is likely to be snapped. BUT he's used to playing a role in public so it won't be too stressful for him.

Heck, the family aren't daft when it comes to leaking PR stories, so expect to see staged snapshots from unknown sources of OP praying with small disabled children very soon. :)

“If the SCA finds in favour of the State, Pistorius could see himself going back to jail.
However, Pistorius could launch an appeal and apply for bail”.

Witz said if he did not appeal or get bail, Pistorius would have 48 hours to put his affairs in order and return to prison.

I am sure I read last week that the norm would be that if OP was granted permission to appeal to the Constitutional Court he would be allowed to stay at Uncle Arnold's. I will see if I can find it. Of course, I hope I am wrong!

Whilst searching for something else, I came across this article. It is a year old but well worth a read. A very passionate account of a South African's views on Op and the Trial.

http://www.dailymaverick.co.za/arti...-privilege-the-farce-the-insult/#.ViY5S9KrQV8

Pistorius Trial: The arrogance, the privilege, the farce, the insult

“Let’s get something straight. Oscar Pistorius is no hapless hero that a barbaric society is trying to punish because of our bloodlust or savagery. He is no tragic figure like Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird. We need not pity him or cry for him. He is quite the opposite. He fought against his disability and triumphed, and then he became convinced he was superior to the rest of us. He basked in his privilege, defined by his race and his class.
He projected himself as a figure of moral virtue, while firing guns in public places, and asked others to lie for him about it. He abused his friends, abused the court system and abused our tolerance. He thrived on his megalomania and believes now that the world wronged him, rather than that taking a human life comes with consequences.

He was our superstar, our gold medallist, our flag-bearer, our champion. He is not anymore.
There is no cheering him as he exits the dock, having dragged this society through a rollercoaster ride of drama and tragedy. If he spends the rest of his days holed up at his uncle’s mansion, fearing the testosterone and lip-gloss coalition of his enemies who lined up in court this week, so be it. If he is confined to a cell in the hospital section of a prison, so be it.

He just needs to get the hell out of our lives. He has insulted this nation’s intelligence and sense of decency enough. He killed one of us. He does not deserve to be one of us.”

Security concerns factor in why prison decided to release #OscarPistorius early. They couldn't guarantee his safety during "staged" release

I'm sure it wasn't the press that were causing concerns. The question now is who is going to guarantee his safety now that he's outside prison. It doesn't bode well for the future.

Well spotted Saromar. Sure you have noticed that some of the most angry Pistorians are not blocked by her though.
Maughan has previously written books about big legal cases/crime over there - she is raising her profile and perhaps thinking about her next moves/playing the long game.

many many threads ago we discussed OP writing his autobio after this - AFAIK from then, he is not allowed to profit from proceeds of crime. ( My memory isn't 100% on that.) Nothing to stop him not being interviewed for a book though, authored by Karyn is there? He needs some good PR, going forward and Annaliese Burgess isn't really do very well. Don't think there are many journalists that the family will deal with. ( The other journo was that one that did the sickly Aimee & Carl video last year. )

#OscarPistorius won't be tagged as part of his correctional supervision. He's been allocated a probation officer. @eNCA

What does it mean: The probation officer runs every step with him because OP isn't tagged ...?

Lisa's co-writer and author N. v.d. Leek fears:

@karynmaughan @eNCA I'd say...that might be just a tad risky. #Fugitive

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/wo...-but-what-about-the-next-Reeva-Steenkamp.html

“For the moment, the athlete will stay at his uncle’s house where he faces not very onerous restrictions. He's denied access to alcohol or firearms but he will be allowed to work and he won’t be electronically tagged. Many observers believe he has been treated much more leniently than thousands of defendants convicted of less serious offences.”

"In a country with above average levels of violence against women, it sends an appalling message about the value placed on women’s lives."

"Now Oscar Pistorious is out - not exactly a free man - but able to get on with his life in a way denied to Steenkamp."

Killer Oscar Pistorius turns to his clubs: Blade Runner hopes to become star golfer

KILLER athlete Oscar Pistorius is hoping to launch a lucrative golf career when he is freed from prison this week.

Sources close to OP say he will hit the fairways after concerns over his future on the track. He’s banned from professional athletics during his five-year sentence, the remainder of which he will serve under licence.

“Justice chiefs in South Africa cannot stop him from competing in golf tournaments as he is effectively free to come and go from his home as he pleases.”

Is the BIB from an OP source? If so, and if correct, it appears that special treatment is being meted out yet again. Remember how all the lawyers and Kelly Phelps said how tough correctional supervision is. This statement bears absolutely no relationship to what was previously put out, i.e. attend church, community service, no lunches or holidays and not being allowed to compete in events or travel.

A family source said he has a handicap of 18 and loves golf. “He is still an amateur but may go pro in time if he can gain sponsorship and support.

If he's virtually free to come and go from his home as he pleases, all I can say is I’m totally shocked, speechless and disgusted. Will the family still be saying he's getting singled out for special treatment. Of course not, only when it suits them. As they said previously, and I'll say it here ... he should be treated like any other prisoner (granted correctional supervision).

'A family source said he has a handicap of 18 and loves golf. “He is still an amateur but may go pro in time if he can gain sponsorship and support'.

Just to clarify the post above.....................I am an amateur golfer with a handicap of 12 and there is no way I will ever or be able to go 'pro'................impossible.

He would find it hard to balance though surely when it's wet...............same as on tiles :).
Or is his balance not as bad now?..................give me strength !!

Anyway ...............he can't remember who he phoned after someone shot at him and who picked him up afterward so how's he going to remember his score at each hole ffs !
18 handicapper turned into scratch golfer.....................yeah rite mate.

The journo that did the video with Aimee and Carl on the eve of OP's sentencing was none other than Karyn Maughan. Carl tweets pics of her from time to time and wishes her a happy birthday. She's obviously very close to the family. I will say though that at least she reports facts, unlike Kelly Phelps and Robyn Curnow who were so biased that they'd say things such as OP had a great day in court when in fact it was a disaster. I actually used to look forward to seeing them as they were so good for a laugh.

Thanks Allan, nice to see you back and giving us the information on this. In the links I posted on 3 or 4 pages back , OP says himself in the interviews that he is "rubbish" at golf!!!
This is why I love WS - people share their knowledge and TBH there's often more accurate information and a more critical view on it here at WS than many of the journalists are providing.

This could get worse than prison for poor OP! Bet the neighbours wish he was back there! Love the tweet about the man driving past shouting, "He's a murderer!"!!

I know, LOL. Must say , if this was happening in the UK we would have all kinds of "rednecks" driving past tooting their horns and lobbing stuff over the wall!

Yes, looked on Jacaranda news as a change from K.Maughan and also cause they had a reporter on the ground. As you can see from the tweets, so little happened and the only people of any consequence who came were Uncle and Aimee.
Well at least Kenny Kunene ( gangster turned businessman) has come out with supportive comments of he will" bounce back". Don't know if he means bounce back to Kgosi?!
There were some funny responses about Henke being the chap trying to make a buck by selling refreshments to the media.

An emotional June Steenkamp has delivered the domestic violence speech her daughter was planning to give at a high school on the day she was killed by sprinter Oscar Pistorius.

June Steenkamp returned to Reeva's old high school in Port Elizabeth today to talk to students - telling them she had 'no feelings of revenge' towards her daughter's killer.

Her sorrowful tribute comes as Pistorius's uncle was pictured grinning outside the Pretoria mansion where the Paralympian is now serving house arrest.
