The green labels such as 135 cM show how much DNA the unknown individual shares with certain relatives. When multiple genetic relatives point back to the same branch of a tree, we can narrow the likely position of the unknown person.

Today, much of this narrowing can be done using Othram's GGPS (Genetic Genealogical Positioning System), which evaluates all possible placements across the tree and integrates both genetic data and genealogy. Earlier last year, a headless skeleton was found buried in a shallow grave just off the road in Natchez, Mississippi. The man remains unidentified, and the local agency working this case does not have the funding needed to pursue advanced forensic DNA testing.
