Disclaimer: my thoughts may be biased.
I think FBI and marshals were involved immediately because of the combination of the burqa and the brazen way she was abducted. Possibilities of quick involvement: could it be a terrorist act- the beginning of an attack on US children? Second, they become involved because of the potential bad foreign press in case media focused on extremist views of burqas, Muslims, etc. I have more possibilities but my daughter is texting me nonstop and I can't multitask. ;). FYI i don't have an issue if these are the reasons those agencies became involved. I understand that media and the way the US is viewed plays a major role in world dynamics. I am just glad they are there for whatever the reason. All jmo

:detective: This never crossed my mind....Thanks!

They have some big boys toys.

The Marshals use both traditional methods and sophisticated technologies for fugitive investigations, including tactical equipment, electronic surveillance and aerial surveillance. Tactical equipment includes covert audio and video alarms and sensors; digital, narrowband, encrypted wireless communications; and radio and satellite communications equipment, such as tactical repeaters, base stations and portable tower trailers.

I wanted to add this, even though we really don't know what happened to N (this article is from 1996, just after it was made a federal crime):

bbm

Pa. Bill Would Outlaw Female Circumcision
Rep. Lita Indzel Cohen Would Make It A Crime To Perform The Procedure On Any Girl Under 18

....Officials in Pennsylvania know of no reported cases of female circumcision here. The state Board of Medicine has never received any complaints of a licensed or unlicensed physician performing the procedure. Likewise, the state Attorney General's Office and the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association have no reported incidents.

Nonetheless, Cohen believes the bill is necessary to protect Pennsylvania's female children. She said she has been told the practice occurs in the state, particularly in the Muslim community, but she could give no specifics.....

I'm jumping in here, not caught up but I wanted to say that during just about every commercial break the local news it's reporting different blurbs about this case, the latest is that police are closing in on a suspect.

  • #685
boy I sure do hope they are right Maureen. I want to see suspects apprehended yesterday.

I'm sure N and her mom would sleep much better at night knowing these perps were behind bars, and we here would rest easier knowing what the h e double toothpicks this was all about and that it is over.

I do think your thoughts are a bit biased, but understandable. There are a lot of Muslims in this community, moreso than in most areas of the country.

I would seriously, seriously doubt this is a terrorist-related activity. Particularly since the large majority of immigrant Muslims in this area come from West Africa, not the Middle East. And actually, they generally have a reputation for "cleaning up the streets" on this side of a river, though of course there are exceptions.

There is also a difference between religious Muslims and cultural Muslims in this area that should be noted.

My DS was telling me that the marshalls specialize in finding dangerous fugitives. And one of their methods is to put surveillance upon all family members and close friends of the subject, including wiretaps, video cams and GPS monitors. And they sit back and wait for the offender to contact someone and then they are nabbed. Let's hope they are in that mode in this case already.

Statistically speaking in this country, a terrorist act is much more likely to be perpetrated by a Christian than a Muslim. Eric Rudolph, Timothy McVeigh, etc.

Muslims are just the latest immigrant group that is "different" so they get blamed for everything. 150 years ago it was the Irish. 100 years ago it was the Italians. 25 years ago it was hispanics. It's simple xenophobia. Don't let it suck you in. We have to build bridges between our communities, not dig deeper trenches.

Please note, this was not intended to be a scolding or accusatory comment. I believe that all people are xenophobic on some level. The human mind likes to make order out of chaos. We, as a melting pot, need to make a very conscious effort to overcome the very human urge to categorize and catalogue people.

I follow your intentions with this post and wanted to add to the thought about marshal involvement that we have recently been discussing.

With this crime being committed against the granddaughter of an Iman of the local Muslim community and with the abductor being covered as she was, their involvement could simply be because like it or not, this case COULD have political cause and or ramifications.

Lets face it, since 9/11 American Muslims have taken a huge amount of heat in this country. This crime could have been committed by a Muslim perp, an anti-Muslim perp, it could be for personal reasons, cultural reasons, for political reason, or it could be a garden variety perv crime. Who the heck knows.

There are extremists of every political agenda, every culture, every belief system. No one group has a lock on that.

So I can see why FBI and marshals, and now that I think of it, all the local civic leaders we have been hearing from may be involved heavily in or tracking this particular case.

Thanks for letting me use your post as a jumping off point. It got me thinking.

The school has discipled 4 staff members that they have determined the staffers actions failed to prevent the abduction and they have installed a new principal.

scanner thread, anyone? I'm not good with it...

ETA - And, way to go, little N! I wonder if she has remembered a specific detail that led them to a certain street?

Agreed, N is doing a great job of helping with this investigation it seem, and her a traumatized 5 year old to boot.

Very proud of our victim in this case and very thankful there are trained forensic interviewers to assist in that endeavor. I wish we didn't need such people with such training but boy am I glad they exist.

From matou's link above:

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Cullen-Elementary-New-Principal-Abduction-188773251.html

...Hite said that effective Tuesday, experienced educator Michael Rosenburg, would take over as principal of the school. Jala Olds Pearson was still listed as the school principal on the district's website as of Monday night.

It isn’t clear if other jobs in the district would await Pearson and/or the other disciplined employees. Hite did say that some of the workers were still working in the district but others weren't....

I'm on the fence about this. It's a tough call, unless there is reason to believe the principal herself was lax. Otherwise, it's pretty sad to see a principal take the fall for something a *substitute* did, unless they're finding fault with the person being allowed inside and being told to go to the office rather than being escorted to the office.

At the school I work at, there's pretty heavy security. But once you're signed in, the office is through another set of metal doors and then to the right. In other words, out of site of the security guards. They can tell someone 'go to the office' but have no idea if they actually did or not. I wonder if there's a similar weak link at N's school?

Not sure if the thread is still open or not belimom but if its not we could ask a mod to reopen given LE seems to be on the track of these perps. LE usually goes radio silent when they are close though so not sure how much we would hear.

here is the link to the philly police citywide channel for those who may want to listen. http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?action=wp&feedId=4603

CAUTION for our members: Please remember the rules. we cannot discuss what we hear on the scanner up here in this thread.

now I am off to figure out if the thread for that scanner is open or not.

If the search area is so narrow could a dog be able to tell if N was at a location?

I was wondering why they didn't use tracking dogs right off... seems if they walked away, it would have been a great case for dogs to lead them straight to her. :waitasec:
