Possible lead in Susan Powell case, 8-18-11

  • #801
Hi everyone. Just started following this case recently and have spent the weekend reading the forums. I have a question - is it possible there was a separate search going on somewhere else while everyone's attention was pulled to the Ely media-invite search? I'm just trying to make sense of what's transpired the last couple days.

It sounds to me like the searches of the Ely mines would be physically risky.I don't think they would be used as part of a ploy. JMO

hi Girly ! I started following the case early on and then the Casey Anthony case got ahold of me which i regret now and so i lost touch. Also I cant help but notice how little info there is on the Powell case and how much overkill of info there is on the Cassey case. Doesnt seem right to me either as that Powell case should be plastered all over the tube like the Anthony case and maybe that would help bring thing to a head. I hope that Josh is questioned every day of his life. I asked just now and I would like to know if you found any info about his car rental? Did he give an answer for why he did that>?

BBM I agree,but there are thousands of cases of missing woman and children (of all races and backgrounds) under suspicious circumstances. Only a few get media attention and most fizzle out. The Anthony case grabbed us all and is still in the media daily.

This is where WS can make a big difference ,IMO.WE can put more of a focus and pressure on cases like Susan's . Shine a big ole light on them .
Rats and cockroaches hate the light .

you know what is bothering me? The rental car or van, I think JP did that to throw of investigators. I think he went the opposite direction. I know he isn't the brightest bulb but you would have to be mental challenged to make that much of a blunder. I don't know with his cocky smile on the interview it just struck me that he knew they were not going to find anything there.

The only thing I can think of as to why he would do something like that is if remembered he left something critical there and he had to take that risk. Could it be to remove her wedding ring? Is that worth risking doing that?

The police wasn't tailing him, they were going over his minivan for evidence. They didn't even realize that he was driving around in a rental until the rental car place notified them about it several days after he returned the car (they had already cleaned out the car) but on second thought considering the news, thought the police might be interested in knowing that he had driven the car for several hundred miles.

I don't know about you, but if someone in my family was reported missing (and I had nothing to do with it) I can't see myself deciding to drop my children off at my sister's house so I can drive for hours - especially since I had already recently had a day without much sleep when I went camping in a blizzard to eat s'mores. I would be wanting to talk to my friends for support, her friends for clues, ideas, and I would be gathering up my family around me. I would probably blame myself for leaving her alone while I took the kids camping. But probably the last thing on my list, would be to rent a car to drive and drive and drive for hundreds of miles by myself.

“She knows she will be chewed up like hamburger when she comes back,” Josh Powell said in a Wednesday interview with The Salt Lake Tribune….
“She can’t come back with them treating her this way,” Josh Powell said. “They want her to be perfect, a saint with no fallibility.”
Susan’s family and friends have openly criticized Josh Powell’s level of cooperation with investigators and recounted instances of controlling and abusive behavior toward his wife. Yet Josh Powell said his wife’s family must stop lying about him and be more accepting of an imperfect Susan.
“She doesn’t have as much strength as they like to think she has,” Josh Powell said.
But he also tearfully described Susan as “a good person and a good wife and a good mother.”

.....................the statement "chewed up like hamburger" strikes me as a little odd, is hamburger really something that is "chewed up"? I can think of people chewing on steak, but I wouldn't think chewing on hamburger as being a common phrase, why hamburger and not chewed up like a sandwich? Is it possible that he is giving a clue about being (apologize for graphic) grounded up somewhere?

He also says that he felt that she was a good wife and mother, but her family expected her to be perfect? Strange that he would consider her to be a good wife and mother even as he is claiming she ran off with another man, abandoning her children and him.

Today we are doing a honk-and-wave campaign," said Susan's friend Kiirsi Hellewell. "We constantly try to do whatever we can every day to try and find her."
The timing of this campaign was scheduled months ago and the schedule of the Ely search was totally coincidental.
"We had this planned before the Nevada news broke and we had no idea that was going to happen," said Hellewell.
But the new investigation this weekend is stirring up a lot of emotions for friends who just want some closure.
"I saw an interview last night with Josh where he said if you ask anybody who knows me they'll tell you I am not a violent person and I could never hurt Susan--I don't think he's asked anybody here in Utah or people who've known him a long time in Washington because he does have violent tendecies and there are alot of witnesses who are close friends of Susan and Josh's who will tell you some pretty bad fights," said Hellewell.

After watching these types of cases since 2002, the beginning of the Laci Peterson case, you'd be surprised how stoooopid some of these guys can be. Seriously.............

S Peterson returned to the scene he'd left Laci and Conner, a ### of times and LE followed him each time. He'd just drive by and turn around and drive the 90 miles home. NOt only that, he then proceeded to stay with his sister, in the same location in proximity of where the bodies had been tossed. Not only that, he used fresh water lures and said they were to catch a certain fish, which was a fish you needed BAIT. Oh, and he told his g/f that he'd "lost" his wife and this would be the first holidays without her (ie meaning Xmas)....but his wife didn't disappear for another month or so...............:crazy:

Then there's others who think you'll buy their wife saved for her departure in a divorce proceeding by putting money away, but then she leaves without a dime................
:confused:...........oh, wait! That happened here. Susan was saving in a separate account and her husband claims she left him WITHOUT any means of support! :rolleyes:

We have a case right now that the hubby said the wife was {crazy}, without any other sources for that information..............oh, crazy me! That happened here too!

Then on just about all cases, they lawyer up and refuse to talk to LE.......oh, yeah, Josh isn't talking either!

They also usually don't allow the children to talk to LE and then they keep them away from the missing wife's family..........

Although with this case, the alleged grieving husband, (because he said himself this is about the boys and Susan secondary), that Susan left with another (guy) Steven Koecher, where as usually they can't find anyone particular, just IMPLY.............:rolleyes:

Oh, and they QUITE OFTEN disparge the missing wife........:mad:

See where this is going? JOSH! ;)

I think Josh did forget something that night, or maybe he THOUGHT he had left a trail and went back to be sure no one was looking for her there. It's actually a 'Standard Operarting Procedure' for, ehhhhh............these types of cases. All these guys think they're unique and no one will ever figure it out. PUHLEEEEESE!

See, hiding behind the children and having a whiney look on your face doesn't hide what it blatently OBVIOUS!

~~~~swoosh!~~~~
JMHO
fran
LOL, and to - you know who you are!...... BOO! :seeya:
~tic-toc-tic-toc~
PS.......I think the midnight camping trip with two under 4 yo's and a brewing storm in under freezing temperatures on a Sunday night when one has to work the next day (but forgot it was Sunday and thought it was ????) :rolleyes: , is just about as believeable as S Peterson saying he went 90 miles to put his new (fresh water boat) in the salt water Bay to catch salt water fish with fresh water lures when there's TONS of outlets between home and the Bay on Xmas eve, ..................well, it's pretty clear and KEEPING QUIET isn't going to stop people from NOT believing the story..........:banghead:
Personally, I can't wait to see what develops from this weekend! Oh, and fwiw, it may NOT be something we will be able to see or detect, any time soon.
Patience is needed when dealing with Lady Justice.
Where is Susan Powell?
It really bothers me that everything seems to hinge on whether or not her body is ever found and that Josh could just get away with this. Isn't there enough circumstantial evidence to bring him in already??? She did not just up and leave her kids and disappear off the face of the earth with no trace if she were alive. There has got to be something more that can be done for these women whose husbands just make them "disappear". Circumstance should be enough in this case.
Casey Anthony was indicted before her daughter's body was found. The attorneys felt there was sufficient circumstancial evidence to convict Casey before the body was found with duct tape over what would have been the mouth and nose. A jury did not agree that it was enough evidence. What is sadder than waiting to get this resolved is to go too early to trial and have him always be free from being tried again.
Heaven forbid if they take this court eventually and he walks free again! I can NOT take another trial outcome like that ANY time soon!
"chewed up like hamburger" refers to a meat grinder.
Is that a hint, that maybe he cut her up?
BBM
But that was because the missing person was just a baby. It was pretty obvious that she did not run away or go off with a new boyfriend or anything. It is a lot harder when the missing person is an adult, imo. As ridiculous as his story is, it is still a slight possibility that she ran off. [ Not believable to me, obviously.]
Funny thing is, I think Casey would have been convicted had Caylee's body never been found and they had not charged her with the DP. My hope is that there will be enough evidence whether she is found or not to charge him no matter how circumstantial that may be. We don't need another Drew Peterson.
ETA: not funny haha, funny ironic
This may be a dumb question, but I'm clear on the east coast and don't know the winter weather there. It seems there is a route starting on I-80, going across the salt flats, and then turning left somehow onto 93 (a state road?). This appears to run through a valley where the snow may not be so bad. Is it possible he went that way, instead?. I know it by-passes Simpson Springs, etc. It just seems like a pretty straight shot - if the roads are ok.
IMO
If he went straight from home, and never went to "pony express", yes, he could have driven that direction. But the weather would be about the same. US-93 is about the same elevation and is as hilly, as the terrain in Tooele County.
Yes, US-93 bypasses. But are you really going to take a dead body onto a freeway with lots of traffic...or do you go down deserted roads, where there's little traffic? There's really few places to hide a body along I-80. It's busy 24/7.
I've been down all those routes, and know I'd have gone down US-6 to Delta and over US-50. Very little traffic (I last drove in, in January).
My primary belief in a US-50 route (rather than US-93) is due to the search at "Ward". It's several miles south of Ely, on US-50. It's not something he'd pass, if he'd come from the north (US-93). Both areas searched, were on US-50, which is part of the "pony express" route in from Utah.
My scenario is based on him saying where he'd been. I think that was an "excited utterance" to Chris Jones, and the wheels were spinning to get him out of it. So he came up with "smores".
Remember, if he went to "pony express" the first time and was going to move the body, he'd have to go back that way to get it, and move it again.
Did Josh ever give an excuse for why he rented a car and drove wherever? I cant find anything about if he was questioned about that or any statements? Anyone know?
Just that he needed a car. As far as I know, the only time Josh talked to the police, it was with his attorney present -- and it was nonproductive.
BTW, it was his neighbor (Peterson) who tipped off the cops about the rental car. Josh had asked him to drive him to turn it in, and then pick up his own car. ALSO, it WAS rented at the Salt Lake Airport (not the private-plane airport that doesn't have car rental facilities.) I've never saw a report that mentioned how he got to the airport, to rent the car in the first place.
They did not have the GPS data from the rental, but they did have the mileage. So having the number of miles he traveled would give them the ability to map out his various possible destinations.
I bet that Ely fit that scenario perfectly.
Likely so.
AND...in that ABC4 news report I just posted, there's an interesting quote from the WVC PD: " Unfortunately, we don 't have any GPS data. The company that rented the car doesn't store that data."
The company may not store the data, but someone does. Maybe they just found it? I keep thinking GPS or cell phone triangulation led them to Ely.
Like your own computer, everything you do leaves a trace. The rental car companies use a lo-jack system that tracks the movements of their cars -- that info is transmitted to a central location.
The only way there's "nothing", is if Josh researched to find a company that doesn't put them on their cars .... and that, if on his computer, would be almost as damning.
A couple of comments.
1) If it was very cold and Susan's body was wrapped in blankets (maybe) and shrink wrap, would the odor be bad enough to leave the odor in a rental w/o leakage?
2) I wish like heck some news reporter would be given unlimited time in order to let josh complete an answer.
They always interrupt while his brain is searching for just the right words with another question. Arggg!
I guess that might take an hour + long show though.. but IMO 'we' lose a lot of info when the reporter continually interrupts.
They keep asking questions, so that the person they're interviewing, doesn't just walk away. It's a way to keep them engaged ...and the continual questions kinda keep them off-balance. Like in the blue hat interview.
Josh Powell willing to meet with FBI — for a price
Puyallup, Wash. • Josh Powell, who has not answered questions for law enforcement since the early days of his wife’s disappearance, on Saturday said he is willing to meet with the FBI.
Powell, however, has conditions: His attorney must be present, and the FBI must pay the attorney.
“Yeah, if they pay my attorney’s fees, and he advises me properly, why wouldn’t I?” Josh Powell responded to a reporter’s questions about an FBI meeting.
But Powell still refuses to meet with West Valley City police, who are leading the investigation. Powell contends detectives there have misled him and the public
Oh snipped from the above article, grrr..
It occurred to me they were planting something in Ely so they could magically show it to the media,” Powell said.
He has repeatedly said he took his two young sons camping in Utah’s west desert the cold night his wife disappeared. On Saturday, he said the hot search outside rugged Ely proved the wisdom of such a decision.
“You don’t go camping in the desert in the summer,” Powell said. “You go in the cold.”
eta, but then again, he sure is talking a lot...
