Did they drain the water in Orlando? I thought they just dove.

They did drain water from an irrigation ditch for Sandra Cantu.

To me this feels more like what happened with Cantu. Especially since Tommy is in jail with such a high bond. Draining ponds is expensive. There is too much water in Florida for investigators to waste resources without a serious reason.

jmo

I only recall LE mentioning "training exercise" while on a body of water in Orlando associated with Caylee but never heard that any body of water was drained for Caylee.

I must of missed LE mentioning "training exercise" when they drained water from the ditch regarding Sandra.

I'm trying to catch up after being offline since before this broke, so forgive me for reading backwards, but...

If Tommy had taken Haleigh for ..."personal reasons" as some here are still seeming to believe, why would he have taken other things out of the trailer, like Ron & Misty's dirty laundry, and put them in the pond?

From what I'm reading in the reports, it looks like they're finding things Ron & Misty would not want LE to see... "baskets upon baskets of Cummings and Croslin family dirty laundry both literally and figuratively."... and about 100 pots of pot...

LE said it was L shaped and about 5 acres plus in a remote location. I think it is the pond off Peru Avenue.

Are they draining two ponds? I thought they were draining "Stark's Landing" - or is this the same 3 acre pond?

Authorities begin draining L pond to make task easier

By Larry Sullivan
Palatka Daily News

Authorities are draining a large pond in the Mondex in their search for Haleigh Cummings, the 6-year-old Satsuma girl who vanished in February.

The decision to drain the pond followed two days of searching by police divers.

Removing water will make the search easier, said Maj. Gary Bowling, director of law enforcement for the Putnam County Sheriffs Office.

We got out here and we determined to do this the best, and really, to lessen the risk to divers, we needed to pump out a large volume of the water, Bowling said. Were going to pump out a majority of the water and take a look and well be back in business.

This article seems to confirm they are searching for HaLeigh. All the articles (and there are LOTS of them) seem to say different things.

This is an interesting comment below. HaLeigh was seen at 8pm by a neighbor?

BBM
Authorities say Haleigh was last seen by neighbors about 8 p.m. on Feb. 9. She was reported missing about 3 a.m. Feb. 10 by Misty Croslin, her babysitter and then girlfriend to Haleighs father, Ronald Cummings. He was working a late shift at PDM Bridge, an industrial firm in Palatka.

"Reasons deputies gave for the search Saturday ranged from training to looking for drugs, to recovering stolen property taken from another nearby home.

Finally, Sheriff Jeff Hardy released a statement before noon Saturday that the search was, indeed, for new clues in the Haleigh Cummings case."

LE now confirming the search is related to Haleigh...but then we knew that didn't we:doh:

I have never been negative regarding LE, however I can't wrap my brain around all the "game playing" regarding what LE is doing or not doing. They should have just been upfront or said nothing at all rather then deny, deny, deny then admit what they are actually doing.

If it was in a cold climate, it could help preserve the body for a short time. However, it is Florida and the weather has been very hot. It would enhance the process. After almost 8 months, they will only recover remains and the possibility of finding the COD will be very small unless there are marks on the skeleton or skull.

Thank you for the clarification. I agree that Tim Miller is probably shaking his head in frustration. I remember he would not check the location where Caylee was eventually located because he was worried about stepping on evidence and squishing it further down into the ground. I think in LE's haste to solve this crime they may be ruining key pieces of evidence by walking around that pond like that.

I am no expert though, maybe they know exactly what they are doing and are not worried about that......

I feel the same, but I think you have to deep in mind the kind of people they're dealing with and a small town where everybody knows everyone else's business. It's still disappointing, but maybe that was the only way to get closure here, I don't know.

Putnam pond search confirmed related to possible evidence in Haleigh case

Florida Times-Union - Jacksonville,FL,USA
"Snip" By Dana Treen Story updated at 1:05 PM on Saturday, Sep. 19, 2009

"It has been our position that we will not discuss operations or searches prior to their completion," the news release said. "We have done this to prevent any scene contamination issues that could arise from onlookers."
The sheriff and investigative team will not be participating in formal interviews regarding these events, but they do ask that the area be kept clear to avoid interference in the search. http://www.jacksonville.com/news/met...dence_in_halei

So, I guess there is a method to their madness. But I can't understand putting searchers in the water, why not wait until the pond is drained so as not to disturb possible evidence.

  • #269
I also noticed the water being drained from the pond just gushing out the other end of the hose into a gully...why would they not have a netting or screen on the end of the hose to catch any bones etc. If she's there her remains are bound to be scattered all over the place by now, wouldn't ya think.

It actually goes on to mention the actual dirty laundry: the washing of the blanket when there was no detergent in the house, the dirty clothes in the dryer, why the washing machine was running the night Haleigh disappeared.

Then it mentions the figurative dirty laundry. No mention of baskets of clothing being found in the pond. It was poor word choice by the journalist.

aksleuth I just quoted your post because I wanted to grab the link to that article. This isn't about your post, but the article :)

Off Topic to the search for Haleigh.

In another case on here, I was doing some digging and found that the articles posted on the associatedcontent website are bloggers. Not really reporters.

They are paid for their blogs I believe. That's why I have tried to maintain a certain eye when reading them. I'm not saying this source isn't accurate, but I just wanted to make sure to say this in case no one else knew about it.

I apologize for the off topic post.

Makes it difficult to trust them on other issues knowing how much they have lied about this, imo. It wasn't simple misdirection...they outright lied about the search until too many people found out it was true. :banghead:

Yes, I thought about that...but they could have some kind of filter on the intake to serve that purpose.

  • #273
Mom detective...I said the same thing when I saw that water gushing..doesn't make sense to me, but neither does this whole CASE..:furious:

  • #274
I highly doubt they have found any remains at this point. Look at the men walking the pond. I don't see how they could find small pieces of anything in that manner. (I bet Tim is cringing to see them conduct the search this way.)

Like I cringed when they did that damn dumptser search.

  • #275
Well, maybe if they are draining from the top water, the heavier objects will stay near the bottom and the water gushing will be just water. Like an aquarium. Just a thought.

Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy confirmed that a recent and ongoing search of a large pond south of Palatka is related to possible evidence in the case of missing Haleigh Cummings.

Inital responses from the Sheriff's Office were that it was a training exercise or in one case a marijuana sweep.
Today Hardy, through a statement issued by Lt. Johnny Greenwood, said he wants to quell the rumor that the body of the Satsuma girl has been recovered. The Sheriff's Office has been beseiged with calls about he search off Florida 19.
"It has been our position that we will not discuss operations or searches prior to their completion," the news release said. "We have done this to prevent any scene contamination issues that could arise from onlookers."

A ha....this is where my trusted friends are posting.....wasn't sure at first so I've been downstairs. Shoulda checked up here I guess but I thought these latest developments might have been considered rumors....

So why would Hardy think people would believe a word he says now? His credibility tanked with the training exercise fabrication. Hardy>> :croc: << John Q. Public

Couldn't have said it better myself. Completely ridiculous.

Do they have cadaver dogs there? Would dogs be able to find anything that's been in the water for seven months?
