O/T Hey Snoods ... just want to let you know that horsey is fine. He has pretty phone-number hooves, but they didn't have to cut the fences and let him run as the fire skirted the stables and burned past (with lots of help protecting the stables, of course). In fact, horsey has lots of mates crammed in with him now, as other nearby people from burned or threatened properties have brought their horses to share the accommodation. The more, the merrier in this case!

Daughter's friend is so relieved.

Your right, they are drop down oxy masks. The Capt can manually deploy them. These masks are automatically deployed if the aircraft goes into a decompression. My thoughts are that these masks have loosened due it impact.

They are located overhead. If you loose an engine which happens frequently, the aircraft will stay pressurized. If the A/C looses both engines then you loose the ability to keep the cabin pressurized and the oxy masks will deploy. At this stage my assumption is that the engine has iced they have battled to keep the aircraft airborne. They have pancaked into the ocean. No time for a mayday, emergency ditching preparation etc. If the cabin had depressurization at 32000 ft by the time they got down to 10ft which is basically seconds, the requirement for oxy would not be necessary.

There is also talk of the crew not retrieving up to date weather. When a crew signs on the flight plan will be already waiting for them along with the weather....this is why they carried an extra 40% of fuel. It sounds like media have made it sound like the crew were negligent with the weather. A dispatcher would have had this information for them therefore they were not required to do so. The submerged seats don't like they have sustained a super major impact which may lend weight to a crew member being alive to deploy the slides. Fingers crossed for the black box.

Thank you for posting this. It looks like other planes were flying at higher elevations, and they made it safely. Do you think the 2 minute delay from ATC in telling the plane they couldn't ascend to 36K feet might have been the deadly factor? TIA. This thread is very interesting.

OT: We also have spray paint handy when there are severe tornado warnings to paint hooves, rump, neck, as well as placards that are laced through the manes with identifying info, here in the US. Your Australian horse community is internationally renown. Thanks for sharing the info!
