Russia targeted Kryvyi Rih in a deadly attack on April 4, killing 20 people and injuring 75. Russian media claimed the attack targeted Ukraine's Armed Forces and foreign instructors training them.

No evidence of a military meeting in Kryvyi Rih on April 4 was found, Gulliver Cragg, a correspondent at France 24, reported.

"They hit a peaceful residential area. They hit children and civilians with ballistics with cluster bombs," Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of Kryvyi Rih's military administration, said on April 7.

Ukrainian forces are now embedding malware in their drones as a new tactic in their ongoing war with Russia, Forbes reports. This development adds a cyber warfare dimension to a battlefield already transformed by drone technology.

The malware serves multiple strategic purposes. It prevents Russian forces from studying captured Ukrainian drones to develop countermeasures, stops them from repurposing captured equipment, and potentially allows Ukrainian forces to track the location of Russian drone operators who attempt to use captured devices.

The U.S. did not impose tariffs on Russia, despite imposing tariffs on over 180 different countries and territories, because "we're not doing business" with Russia, U.S. President Donald Trump said on April 7.

Trump told reporters, Russia did not have tariffs imposed "because we’re not doing business, essentially, with Russia, because they’re at war."

Trump said an agreement between Russia and Ukraine is "getting sort of close."

Ukraine has called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following a Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih that killed 20 people, including nine children, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced on April 7.

Additionally, a special meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council is also scheduled.

“This is necessary to draw attention to Russia’s crimes,” Sybiha said.

“Both meetings will take place tomorrow and will help advance peace efforts while holding those responsible accountable,” he added.

Russian intelligence has reportedly disguised homemade explosive devices by packing them alongside sex toys to facilitate a planned series of bombings across Europe.

Western intelligence agencies have accused Moscow of attempting to send bombs in parcels to various locations in Europe, including the UK, Germany and Poland after several parcels caught fire while in transit warehouses last summer.

The bombings in part mirror similar operations in Ukraine, where Russian intelligence has reportedly staged dozens of bombings aimed at official buildings and other crowded locations by tasking locals to make and deliver crudely-made bombs.

Russian warships on Sunday mocked a ceasefire claimed by the White House to be in effect between Kyiv and Moscow and covering the entirety of the Black Sea, with the massed launch of naval cruise missiles at the Ukrainian capital and other civilian targets.

The White House, on March 25, announced Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a ceasefire in the Black Sea. Until the Sunday launch of cruise missiles against Ukraine by Russia’s Black Sea fleet, the Kremlin had not openly contradicted the US government claim that Russia had promised not to engage in combat activities in the Black Sea basin. Ukraine has no navy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly acknowledged for the first time that his troops are active in Russia's Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine.

I'm pretty sure they just voted to keep President Zelenskyy. Trump and Putin don't like him because he won't kneel before them and can't push him around. Plus President Zelenskyy never signed that mineral deal and that makes Cheetos extra salty jmvoo

Our military has captured two Chinese citizens who were fighting as part of the Russian army. This happened on Ukrainian territory—in the Donetsk region. Identification documents, bank cards, and personal data were found in their possession.

We have information suggesting that there are many more Chinese citizens in the occupier's units than just these two. We are currently verifying all the facts—intelligence, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the relevant units of the Armed Forces are working on it.

I have instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to immediately contact Beijing and clarify how China intends to respond to this.

Russia's involvement of China, along with other countries, whether directly or indirectly, in this war in Europe is a clear signal that Putin intends to do anything but end the war. He is looking for ways to continue fighting. This definitely requires a response. A response from the United States, Europe, and all those around the world who want peace.

The captured Chinese citizens are now in the custody of the Security Service of Ukraine. Relevant investigative and operational actions are ongoing.

The U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command announced on April 8 that American personnel and equipment will be relocated from Poland's Jasionka Airport, a key logistics hub for delivering military aid to Ukraine.

"The important work of facilitating military aid to Ukraine via Jasionka will continue under Polish and NATO leadership, supported by a streamlined U.S. military footprint," the command said in a statement.

Ukrainian troops clashed with six Chinese soldiers near the villages of Tarasivka and Bilohorivka in Donetsk Oblast, according to the president.

Zelensky said that China is another country, along with Iran and North Korea, that supports Russia in its war against Ukraine.

"But there is a difference: the North Koreans fought against us in the Kursk direction, the Chinese are fighting on the territory of Ukraine," the president said at a press conference with Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever.

Despite his role as mediator, Trump has not taken punitive measures in response to Russia's renewed aggression. He reiterated on April 7 that Moscow had avoided U.S. tariffs only because "we're not doing business, essentially, with Russia, because they're at war."

Trump's new tariff regime, announced under the "Liberation Day" policy, slapped duties on most major U.S. trading partners — including a 10% tariff on Ukraine.

The European Union was hit with 20%, and China with 54%. However, Russia, Belarus, North Korea, and Cuba were not included.

The Kremlin is maintaining its effort to deny the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government as part of a broader strategy to claim that Ukraine is not a legitimate negotiating partner, while simultaneously demanding Ukrainian regime change and demilitarization, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on 7 March.

This comes amid Trump’s pivot toward Russia as he pushes for Kyiv-Moscow peace talks, allegedly to end Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Washington claimed a partial ceasefire deal had been reached, but the Kremlin said it remains on hold unless sanctions on Russian banks and vessels are lifted. Moscow continues to demand Ukraine’s de facto capitulation, including control over occupied and large unoccupied territories.

Here, the Russians broke the stalemate and conducted a massive surprise assault to break through the Ukrainian defense line. Despite the previous less intense tempo of fighting in the area, Ukrainian troops were well prepared for any scenario and dealt a deadly blow to the enemy armored column.

Overall, Russia’s obsession with achieving a breakthrough by brute force has only handed Ukraine another victory. Despite suffering countless losses from similar armored column attacks throughout the war, Russian commanders continue to believe that sheer weight could crack Ukrainian defenses, demonstrating once again their inability to adequately adapt to the modern battlefield.

Howard G. Buffett, CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, has pledged to surpass $1 billion in aid to Ukraine this year, despite growing uncertainty in US–Ukraine relations, Fortune reports.

Buffett’s foundation has already contributed around $800 million to Ukraine since the invasion began, with $175 million dedicated to humanitarian demining efforts. The agricultural sector in Ukraine has been severely impacted, with 20.5% of its farmland lost due to landmines, occupation, and ongoing fighting. Buffet told AP that his foundation will surpass $1 billion in aid to Ukraine this year.

An estimated 139,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian land are potentially contaminated by mines, with about two-thirds of that area being fertile farmland. Since the war’s start, mine-related incidents have killed 335 people and injured 823.

Law enforcement officials detained a man suspected of killing a Ukrainian soldier and committing acts of sabotage in Kharkiv.

The suspect also planned to assassinate Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, and Viacheslav Zadorenko, head of the Derhachi City Military Administration, reports the Office of the Prosecutor General (OGP).

“The Russian agent planned to blow up the car of the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, for which he was promised $50,000,” the prosecutor’s office said.

At least 15 explosions rocked Kharkiv late on April 8, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov. Russia launched waves of Shahed-type attack drones in a "massive" strike on the city, causing fires and property damage.

Over 20 drones targeted Kharkiv, Terekhov said, with 17 striking the Osnovyanskyi district.

Other drones struck the Shevchenkivskyi, Kyivskyi, and Industrial districts, damaging property, Syniehubov said.

The attack wounded at least 14 people between the ages of 18 and 87, with half of them requiring hospitalization, Lysak said. One woman is reportedly in serious condition.

A series of explosions occurred in Dnipro between 10 and 11 p.m. local time, according to Lysak. Drone strikes caused multiple fires throughout the city and damaged homes and vehicles.

Bruce also said North Korea's direct involvement in the war was disturbing and highlighted China's role in supporting Moscow's full-scale war.

"China is a major enabler of Russia in the war in Ukraine. China provides nearly 80% of the dual-use items that Russia needs to sustain the war."

According to Zelensky, Ukrainian troops clashed with six Chinese soldiers near the villages of Tarasivka and Bilohorivka in Donetsk Oblast. The two captured fighters are now being held by Ukraine's Security Service.

Olexiy Haran, politics professor at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy, said the intensified attacks may be Russia's intent to "maximize the stakes" and possibly to show it to Trump in particular.

"The question here is how we can break the Russian position — the only thing (that can) is pressure," Haran told the Kyiv Independent.

"But (Trump) is not doing anything right now."

He's been "pissed off," "not happy," and "very angry," but so far, U.S. President Donald Trump is yet to take any concrete action to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a full ceasefire.

Trump has multiple forms of leverage he could use against the Kremlin — increasing military aid to Ukraine, strengthening the enforcement of existing sanctions, or imposing additional tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil.

So far, Trump has used none of it, and aside from a few angry statements, he is letting Putin wage war unabated.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China has avoided publicly condemning Russia’s armed aggression. In March 2022, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called Russia “Beijing’s most important strategic partner.”

In 2023, China proposed its own “peace plan” for Ukraine. Russian leader Vladimir Putin stated that “many provisions of China’s peace plan are consonant with Russian approaches” and “could form the basis for a peaceful settlement.”

In September 2024, China announced plans to create a “Friends of Peace” platform through which countries would promote a “political settlement” of the war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said he asked his top diplomat “to immediately contact Beijing.” He said China would be the third country to offer military support to Russia after Iran, which has supplied attack drones, and North Korea, which has supplied soldiers, according to American and South Korean officials.

China has provided strong diplomatic support for Russia since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022. Beijing has also offered an economic lifeline through the trade in energy and consumer goods.

China has helped Russia ramp up its defense industrial base as it continues its war against Ukraine, senior Biden administration officials told CNN last year.

The support China has provided includes significant quantities of machine tools, drone and turbojet engines and technology for cruise missiles, microelectronics, and nitrocellulose, which Russia uses to make propellant for weapons, the officials said in April 2024.

China purchases huge quantities of Russian oil and supplies Moscow with technologies that can be used on the battlefield, such as drones. Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, and Mr. Putin have met numerous times and deepened their countries’ ties to include more military cooperation.

Russian and American officials will meet for diplomatic discussions in Istanbul on 10 April, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on 8 April.

Russia’s newly appointed ambassador to the United States, Alexander Darchiyev, will lead Moscow’s delegation at the talks. The US team will be headed by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Sonata Coulter, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.

Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said that Ukrainian forces successfully struck a Russian Tu-22M3 bomber with a drone several days ago, according to an interview with Lb.ua.

“A few days ago, our successful actions destroyed a Tu-22M3 long-range bomber. It had just landed when our drone hit it. The cost is about 100 million dollars,” Syrskyi said.

The Russian bomber fleet has been used to launch missile strikes against Ukrainian targets throughout the war.

European allies have urged the U.S. to coordinate any reduction of its military presence on the continent, warning that an uncoordinated withdrawal could destabilize NATO's eastern defenses, Bloomberg reported on April 9, citing undisclosed diplomatic sources.

European diplomats reportedly asked Washington for early warnings and time to prepare, emphasizing that troop withdrawals should be carried out without undermining NATO's deterrence capabilities.

The EU is allocating another financial assistance tranche of 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) as part of the G7 loan program for Ukraine, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced on April 9.

"We are grateful to our partners for supporting the economy and the rapid recovery of our country," Shmyhal said after meeting EU Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis in Brussels.

"We are delivering on our promise to support Ukraine," Dombrovskis said. "This (aid) provides crucial financing to Ukraine and makes Russia pay for its aggression."

Just today, for the second time, air raid sirens have sounded in most regions and in Kyiv due to the threat of Russian ballistic missiles. Throughout the day, there were new bomb and missile strikes against the Sumy and Donetsk regions.

Over the past 24 hours, Russians have already used 55 attack drones against Ukraine, most of them Shaheds. There were deliberate strikes on Dnipro and Kharkiv, as well as on communities in the Sumy and Donetsk regions. Ordinary houses and civilian infrastructure were damaged – stores, a healthcare center, a gas pipeline.

Unfortunately, a significant number of people were injured. Eleven people were taken to hospitals in Dnipro and Kharkiv. In Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, a child — an 11-year-old girl — was injured in a Russian strike. In the village of Bilyi Kolodyaz', Kharkiv region, Russians attacked the village council building with an FPV drone strike right during the distribution of humanitarian aid. Everyone is receiving the necessary assistance. I thank our medical workers, emergency and utility services, police officers, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Only in unity can we protect lives from such constant Russian terror. And that is precisely why we need the support of our partners – to save as many people as possible from continuous Russian attacks. War does not abate from talks and statements, and Moscow ignores any diplomacy because they believe they have the liberty to do so.

Increasing pressure on Russia is essential to stop the strikes. And that depends on the decisions of the United States, Europe, and all partners around the world who truly want to end this war.

Chinese national captured fighting for Russia says he paid $3,500 to recruiter, sought citizenship.

A Chinese national captured by Ukrainian forces said he paid 300,000 rubles (roughly $3,500) to a middleman in China to join the Russian military in exchange for the promise of citizenship, Ukraine's Luhansk military unit press service told Ukrainian Pravda on April 9.

Russia has capacity to mobilize 5 million trained troops, Syrskyi says. Russia can mobilize 5 million troops who have undergone military service, while its overall mobilization capacity is 20 million, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said.

Russia has increased its force in Ukraine "fivefold since the beginning of the aggression," Syrskyi said in an interview, putting the number of Russian troops currently deployed in the country at 623,000.

By March, Ukraine reportedly received 90% of the weapons allocated under former President Joe Biden’s administration, while President Donald Trump’s administration has not yet announced new aid for Ukraine.

According to Interfax-Ukraine, Zelenskyy clarified during a meeting with journalists that Ukraine is not seeking free assistance but rather proposing a paid arrangement for critical defense equipment.

“We have communicated to the American side a large package that we want to buy in one form or another. This is our format for how we will pay for it,” Zelenskyy said.

The European Union’s chief diplomat Kaja Kallas called China the “main sponsor” of Russia’s war, commenting on the information about the participation of Chinese citizens in the war against Ukraine.

“It is clear that China is the key enabler of Russia’s war. Without Chinese support, Russia wouldn’t be able to wage the war in the amount that they are waging this,” Kallas said at a press conference following the EU-Ukraine Association Council meeting in Brussels on 9 April.

At least 163 Chinese nationals are serving in Russia's Armed Forces as of early April, according to a Ukrainian intelligence document seen by the Kyiv Independent on April 9.

Another document showed photos and passport details of 13 Chinese recruits who were being selected for service in the Russian army as of April 2.

"There are 155 Chinese citizens who are fighting against Ukrainians on the territory of Ukraine," President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed this information to journalists on April 9.

"We are collecting information, we believe that there are many more."

From the article:

Karelina -- a ballet dancer -- was serving a 12-year prison sentence in a penal colony, having been convicted of treason in August 2024. She was accused of organizing fundraisers for Ukraine's military, attending pro-Ukraine rallies and posting social media messages against Russia's war in Ukraine.

Her boyfriend, Chris Van Heerden, spoke to ABC News Live hours after her sentencing, saying she did nothing wrong. He said all she did was donate $50 to a Ukrainian charity.

The U.S. delegation had left the Russian Consulate in Istanbul, TASS reported. The consultations between Washington and Moscow were held in a closed format and lasted around six hours.

Details of the meeting and possible conclusions have not been disclosed at the time of publication.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on April 9 that the talks would focus "solely" on embassy operations, "not on normalizing a bilateral relationship overall."

When U.S. President Donald Trump paused military aid to Ukraine last month, the man described as his "spiritual advisor," Pastor Mark Burns, backed the decision.

This week, Burns is urging him to send Kyiv more tanks, fighter jets, and air defense.

"I now believe that supporting Ukraine is America first," he told the Kyiv Independent in an interview on April 9.

Burns's dramatic shift in stance comes after a trip to Ukraine where he witnessed the atrocities committed by Russia first-hand, visiting the site of a missile attack in Kryvyi Rih, which killed 20 people, including nine children.

The effort of the British- and French-led "coalition of the willing" to provide security guarantees to Ukraine faces delays due to missing commitments from the U.S., Bloomberg reported on April 9, citing undisclosed sources.

The coalition of European and other partners is meeting at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on April 10 to discuss a path toward a safe and secure Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, with the deployment of European peacekeepers floated as a possible part of the plan.

U.S. President Donald Trump has yet to offer any clear security guarantees to Ukraine and the coalition as Washington signals a reduced military presence on the continent.

Republican Congresswoman Victoria Spartz sparked outrage among Ukrainians after suggesting they “must accept” ceding territory to Russia and elect a new president instead of Volodymyr Zelenskyy if “they don’t wish to lose their entire country,” according to The Telegraph’s reporting.

Her comments in a Telegraph interview prompted fierce reactions from Ukrainian officials, activists, and even her former teachers, who called Spartz a “traitor” and a “turncoat.”

Ukraine is now significantly less dependent on foreign weaponry, yet its military success could be further enhanced with greater involvement from the EU, The Economist writes.

“Contracting with Ukraine and setting up joint ventures with its firms would be a cost-effective way to mitigate the end of American assistance. Individual European countries, led by Denmark, have already started down this path. These efforts need to be built on. Give Ukrainian defense firms more money, and they will make their own tools to keep Russia at bay,” the report says.

Ukrainian drone operators from the Madiar’s Birds 414th Regiment of Strike Unmanned Aerial Systems took out 522 Russian soldiers over a 22-day operation in Russia’s Belgorod Oblast.

On 5 April, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported that over 77,000 Russian targets were struck and destroyed by various types of Ukrainian drones in March—an increase of 10% compared to February.

While the purpose of the tribunal is to investigate and prosecute Russia's war crimes, Putin will not be tried in absentia, according to two European officials who spoke with Euronews.

The same condition will also apply to other high-level Russian officials, including Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Putin, Mishushtin, and Lavrov will only be put on trial if they are physically present at the tribunal — an unlikely scenario, given Russia's continued attacks, disregard for international law, and lack of cooperation with the West.

Prince Harry made a surprise visit to Ukraine on April 10, meeting with soldiers and civilians injured in Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, according to a statement from his office.

Harry visited the Superhumans Center, a facility in Lviv that provides prosthetics and rehabilitation to Ukrainians wounded by war. The tour of the center came as part of Harry's broader work with injured veterans, a press statement said.
