When Metallica Took Moscow
''As the post-Soviet era seems to come to a close — with Starbucks and Coca-Cola joining McDonald’s in shutting down their businesses in Russia, the regime cracking down on the remnants of the country’s free press, and sanctions cinching around the economy like a noose — other artifacts of that false dawn are circulating on social media. Perhaps none are as arresting as an absolutely massive concert that Metallica headlined in Moscow in 1991, mere months before the official collapse of the Soviet Union''

''What is “Enter Sandman” compared to the heady claims of national glory? Or, for that matter, a genuinely fair and equal society, which is what Russians wanted and deserved? Not a lot. But it’s not nothing, either. The tolerance for certain rights and privileges, the prevalence of western products and services, the sense that Russia was connected to the wider world — these all surely made the Putin regime more bearable, and their sudden disappearance will be felt as an imposition. It’s worth remembering that while the sound of freedom is no doubt different for everyone, for those Muscovites in 1991, it was this: “Exit light! Enter night!”

Facebook and Instagram users not allowed to call for death of Putin
''Facebook and Instagram users are not allowed to call for the death of Vladimir Putin, according to an update issued by their parent company.

Meta had issued new guidance on Friday allowing content that condoned the harm of Russian soldiers, with media reporting at the time that it also permitted content urging violence against the Russian president.

However, Meta’s president of global affairs, Nick Clegg, has clarified the rules on posts, stating that “calls for the death of a head of state” are banned.

Clegg said in an internal post to staff on Sunday, first reported by Bloomberg, that the new moderation rule “is never to be interpreted as condoning violence against Russians in general”.

He added: “We also do not permit calls to assassinate a head of state.”
Reuters reported last week that calls for the death of Putin, and his Belarusian counterpart and ally Alexander Lukashenko, would be allowed on Meta platforms in a limited number of countries, unless they contained other targets or have two indicators of credibility, such as the location or method.

The posts would be permitted in countries in eastern Europe and the Caucasus including Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Poland, according to internal emails to Meta’s content moderators, Reuters said.''

BREAKING: Fox News reporter Benjamin Hall seriously injured after incident near Kyiv, prosecutor says

BNO News on Twitter
Anti-war protester runs onto stage of one of Russia's most-watched news programs, telling viewers: "Don't believe the propaganda. You're being lied to"

Fox News correspondent hospitalized after being injured in Ukraine - CNN
"We have a minimal level of details right now, but Ben is hospitalized and our teams on the ground are working to gather additional information as the situation quickly unfolds," Fox News chief executive Suzanne Scott said in a memo to employees.

Hall's injury comes one day after Brent Renaud, an award-winning American journalist, was killed in the Ukrainian city of Irpin.
Andriy Nebitov, the head of the Kyiv region police, said that Russian forces shot Renaud, adding that "the occupants cynically kill even journalists of international media, who've been trying to tell the truth about atrocities of Russian military in Ukraine."
Another journalist, Juan Arredondo, was also wounded in Ukraine on Sunday.

London — Over 40,000 Syrians have registered to travel to Ukraine and fight for Russia, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Syrian non-governmental group. The group said Monday that no fighters had left Syria so far.

Among those being targeted for recruitment, SOHR said that a notice had been sent out to members of the Al-Qatarji militia — a group that has been sanctioned by the United States for serving as an intermediary between the Assad regime and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) — letting them know that they could sign up to be "mercenaries" for Russia in Ukraine.

Payment for the work was rumored to be between $1,500 and $2,500, SOHR said, though no figure had been confirmed.

"A brave protester interrupted an evening broadcast on Russian state TV network Channel One on Monday with a sign blasting President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine.

“Stop the war. No to war!” the woman shouted as she lifted up a sign reading, “Don’t believe propaganda. They’re lying to you.”

A clip of the broadcast quickly went viral on social media, where multiple journalists identified the woman who stormed the studio as Marina Ovsyannikova, an editor at Channel One. She’s reportedly already been detained by police."

The source believed Russia may be able to garner up to 50,000 fighters — if they're willing to pay, or at least offer citizenship to the separatist Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics now recognized by Moscow.

The politician argued that, rather than believing in this cause, such fighters may ultimately be seeking refugee status in Europe.

"Moreover, like in Libya, most Syrian rebels who went there for Turkey ended up in Italy," the politician said. "They wanted to go to Europe. Many of them will escape from Poland to Germany now."

Musk challenges Putin to ‘single combat’ over Ukraine, Russia responds: 'Weakling'

Madness abounds.

I am grateful that Musk did send the Starlink technology to Ukraine.

Challenging Putin to one-on-one combat with Ukraine as the stakes---unique idea from a brain that thinks differently and has the money to prove it, but would never happen.

Then Russia responds to him, calling him a weakling. Which we know is, to Putin, the lowest a man can be.

'Russia is the global enemy': Fallout from Ukraine invasion could last for years
WASHINGTON — When he invaded Ukraine, Vladimir Putin almost certainly expected a quick, decisive conquest that would restore the Kremlin's influence in Eastern Europe and burnish his own status as a Russian leader on par with Peter and Catherine the Great.

Weeks later, Russia is a hobbled pariah, while the dogged Ukrainian resistance — led by charismatic President Volodymyr Zelensky — has attained admiration in much of the world.

Fearing Fallout From Putin's War, Russians Flee Abroad (rferl.org)
[...]

Many say fear of the economic and political fallout from the war and the prospect of men being sent to fight in Ukraine were the primary reasons they decided to leave everything behind and flee the country.

But due to an ever-increasing number of crippling sanctions piled upon Russia, they don't have many destinations to choose from, with many Western countries restricting visas for Russian citizens. Meanwhile, thousands of international flights have been cancelled, as Russian airlines are barred from flying over many Western countries.

[...]

Many new Russian emigrees told RFE/RL that they had only a few days, if not hours, to make such a "life-changing decision" and leave. "We bought tickets at 7 p.m. on March 2 for the flight at 2:30 a.m. the following morning," Marina said. "In two hours we packed and headed to the airport with two suitcases."

[...]

Rumors of martial law being imposed by President Vladimir Putin in early March caused more panic. Martial law would mean a military mobilization of men, the closure of borders, and various restrictions on people's everyday lives and activities.

"We were afraid that the borders would be closed the very next day. So, we left everything -- our apartment and cars -- and jumped on the plane," Marina said.

'Choose dignity': Zelenskiy urges Russian troops to surrender

Here is the first part of his speech.

Free people of the free country, the 19th day of our resistance has come to end. Another hard day that made us closer to the victory and peace for Ukraine. As before, the enemy is perplexed. They didn’t expect such resistance. They believed their propaganda that lied about us for decades.

They still can’t recover but have begun realizing that they won’t achieve anything by war. Their soldiers know it. Their officers understand it. They flee from the battlefield, leaving behind their vehicles and equipment. We take the trophies and use them for defence of Ukraine. Russian forces have de-facto become a supplier of equipment for our army. They couldn’t imagine it in a nightmare.

[In Russian] I want to tell Russian soldiers, those who have already entered our lands and those who are only being sent to fight against us. Russian conscripts, please, listen to me attentively. Russian officers, you have already understood everything. You won’t be able to take anything from Ukraine. You will take lives – you are many – but yours will be taken too.

What are you dying for? I know, you want to survive. We hear in your intercepted calls what you really think of this war, of this shame, and of your state. Your conversations with each other, your calls home to your families, we hear everything. We make conclusions. We know who you are. That’s why I offer you a choice: On behalf of the Ukrainian people, we give you a chance to live. If you surrender to our forces, we will treat you as humans have to be treated: with dignity. The way you have not been treated in your army. And the way your army doesn’t treat our people. Choose.
