As Ukraine crisis deepens, China lifts all wheat-import restrictions on Russia | South China Morning Post (scmp.com)
  • Agreement reflects deepening ties between Beijing and Moscow while addressing China’s need to enhance food security
  • China could provide a lifeline to Russia’s economy after the United States and its allies imposed swift economic sanctions on Moscow this week
China has announced it is fully open to Russian wheat imports, in the latest sign of their strengthening bilateral ties as the Ukraine crisis is unfolding before a global audience and in the wake of fresh sanctions being imposed on Moscow.

The announcement by China’s General Administration of Customs was made public on Thursday, hours after Russian troops launched a wide-ranging attack on Ukraine. However, the agreement was part of a package of deals made during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Beijing early this month.

Jimmy Carter says Russia's invasion of Ukraine 'threatens security in Europe and the entire world' - CNNPolitics
"Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine using military and cyber weapons violates international law and the fundamental human rights of the Ukrainian people," Carter said in a statement posted on Twitter. "I condemn this unjust assault on the sovereignty of Ukraine that threatens security in Europe and the entire world, and I call on President Putin to halt all military action and restore peace."
The US and allies, the former President said, "must stand with the people of Ukraine in support of their right to peace, security, and self-determination." Carter

"The American government and people must stand in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people as they seek freedom and the right to choose their own future. We cannot tolerate the authoritarian bullying and danger that Putin poses," Bush said in his statement.

Obama called for bipartisan support of Biden's sanctions, saying,"There may be some economic consequences to such sanctions, given Russia's significant role in world energy markets. But that's a price we should be willing to pay to take a stand on the side of freedom."

Clinton said that "the world will hold Russia and Russia alone accountable, both economically and politically, for its brazen violation of international law."

On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump called Russia's military operation in Ukraine "a very sad thing for the world" and claimed in a Fox interview that it wouldn't have happened during his administration. But speaking to a conservative radio show on Tuesday hosted by Clay Travis and Buck Sexton, Trump had hailed Russian President Vladimir Putin's dismembering of independent, democratic, sovereign Ukraine as an act of "genius."

Ukraine: Air raid sirens blare out as explosions rock Kyiv, where a mass exodus is underway | World News | Sky News
[...]

Despite the explosions and flashes in the sky, we could see commuters making their way into the capital as normal, across bridges and on motorways.

It was surreal. But it wasn't normal, and within hours that traffic had stopped.

People were suddenly aware of the magnitude of what was happening as air raid sirens blared out across the city.
[...]

Within hours of the explosions that rocked the city at dawn, it started to become clear a mass exodus was underway.

[...]

The main roads heading out of Kyiv towards the west were jammed with traffic.

Miles and miles of queues.

[...]

Nobody knows what the next few hours, let alone days, will bring here.

Informatie over sancties Rusland | RVO.nl | Rijksdienst

The European Union has imposed several sanctions against Russia. These have consequences for entrepreneurs doing business with this country.

What sanctions are there?
The EU has imposed economic sanctions against Russia. These have consequences for various parties and sectors. An overview of the EU sanctions against Russia can be found on the EU Sanctions Map website .

In summary, you should consider the following points:

  • Financial restrictions are in place against a number of Russian banks, the Russian government and against large Russian state-owned companies in the oil and defense sectors. For example, you may not lend money to them.
  • There is an export ban on certain equipment, technology and services for deepwater oil exploration and production, Arctic oil exploration and production and shale oil projects in Russia.
  • There is an export ban for weapons and related products. Technical and financial support and services related to these products are also prohibited. There are exceptions for existing contracts prior to the introduction of the sanctions.
  • There is an import ban for weapons and related products from Russia.
  • There is an export ban for dual-use items and technologies to Russia if the goods are exported to military end-users or intended for military end-use. Dual use or 'dual use' means that the goods usually have a normal (civil) application, but that they can also be used for military purposes.
  • There is a visa ban for persons on the EU sanctions list.
  • You are not allowed to do business with persons, companies and organizations on the EU sanctions list. Their assets in the European Union are frozen.
  • Extensive sanctions are also in place restricting trade with Ukraine's Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea regions .

EU adopts package of sanctions in response to Russian recognition of the non-government controlled areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine and sending of troops into the region

The package agreed today <23-2-2022> includes:

Targeted restrictive measures
Within the existing framework for sanctions, the EU will extend restrictive measures to cover all the 351 members of the Russian State Duma, who voted on 15 February in favour of the appeal to President Putin to recognise the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk ”republics”.

Moreover targeted restrictive measures will be imposed on additional 27 high profile individuals and entities, who have played a role in undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. These include decision makers such as members of the government, who were involved in the illegal decisions; banks and businesspersons/oligarchs supporting financially or materially Russian operations in the Donetsk and Luhansk's territories, or benefitting from them; senior military officers, who played a role in the invasion and destabilisation actions; and individuals responsible for leading a disinformation war against Ukraine.

Restrictive measures include an asset freeze and a prohibition from making funds available to the listed individuals and entities. In addition, a travel ban applicable to the listed persons prevents these from entering or transiting through EU territory.

European Council conclusions on Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine

European Council conclusions, 24 February 2022

Militaire verplaatsingen, extra hulp voor Oekraïne: dit doet Nederland

More trips

In NATO member state the Netherlands, now that the war in Ukraine has broken out, more military movements will be visible, Prime Minister Rutte said today. This mainly concerns logistical preparations related to NATO, says Frits Wester about Rutte's comments. "It concerns, for example, opening airports in preparation for foreign NATO troops. But also material transport over Dutch territory."

The Netherlands is a transit country, says former Army Commander Mart de Kruif. "For example, American NATO equipment enters Europe via the Netherlands. That is why you will see that equipment driving through the Netherlands in the coming period."

Send troops

NATO will not fight in Ukraine, says former Armed Forces Commander Dick Berlin. But the military alliance could send more troops to NATO member states near Ukraine.

The Netherlands also supplies NATO's so-called Response Force, says De Kruif. "It concerns a battalion of 800 men. They must be ready if they are sent out. And that is why we will also see more military movements here. Because those preparations take time. They also just have to check whether everything works. Rutte does not mean that they are already driving to the east of Europe."

show muscles
Today it has become clear what Putin wants, says Berlin. "Putin is now showing his true nature. NATO must now also flex its muscles. So NATO's preparedness must be increased." This should be done on Europe's eastern borders, with NATO member states around Ukraine. "NATO must send a strong signal that it disagrees. That they are determined and willing to escalate with it."

Hundreds arrested as shocked Russians protest Ukraine attack (yahoo.com)
Shocked Russians turned out by the thousands Thursday to decry their country's invasion of Ukraine as emotional calls for protests grew on social media. Some 1,745 people in 54 Russian cities were detained, at least 957 of them in Moscow.

Hundreds of posts came pouring in condemning Moscow’s most aggressive actions since the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Vladimir Putin called the attack a “special military operation” to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine from “genocide” — a false claim the U.S. had predicted would be a pretext for invasion, and which many Russians roundly rejected.

Tatyana Usmanova, an opposition activist in Moscow, wrote on Facebook that she thought she was dreaming when she awoke at 5:30 a.m. to the news, which she called “a disgrace that will be forever with us now.”

“I want to ask Ukrainians for forgiveness. We didn’t vote for those who unleashed the war,” she said.

Gasprijzen door het dak: 'Nog geen alternatief voor Russisch gas'

This is said in an interview with Hans Grünfeld, director of the Association for Energy, Environment and Water (VEMW) on 2/24/2022

Fifteen percent Russian gas
An estimated fifteen percent of all gas in the Netherlands originates in Russia. "We are therefore one of the EU countries that is least dependent on Russian gas. But it is still a substantial share." In comparison: Germany is about thirty percent dependent on it. "Some Eastern European countries are even 100 percent. They have no alternative."

Sanction
If the EU were to decide to stop buying gas from the Russians as a sanction, that would mean that Europe would have to get the gas from somewhere else. "For example, from the Middle East, Africa or the United States. There are talks about this, but it will not work in the short term. Extra gas cannot simply be produced."

He cannot therefore imagine that this sanction will come. "We mainly affect ourselves with this. In that case, an acute shortage will arise in some countries."

This was said by Ursula von der Leyen European Commission President in a press conference

"Vladimir Poetin moet de gevolgen dragen": verregaande sancties van EU, VS, VK en Japan tegen Rusland

The sanctions will have a massive impact on Russia, according to both the US and Europe. "Russian President Vladimir Putin must and will fail," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The United Kingdom and Japan have also announced measures.

Europe: 'Putin must and will fail'
The European Union agreed last night on "heavy and massive" sanctions against Russia. The heads of state and government approved measures that will "maximize" the Russian economy and the elite. President Vladimir Putin "must and will fail," said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after the crisis summit.

It concerns a broad package of sanctions, the details of which will be worked out in the coming days:

  • The financial measures will affect 70 percent of Russia's banking system and major state-owned enterprises. “This will increase borrowing costs, increase inflation and gradually erode the industrial base,” said von der Leyen.
  • The EU bans the sale of aircraft and parts to Russian airlines. That too will hurt, von der Leyen said, as three quarters of Russia's current commercial fleet is produced in the EU, the United States and Canada.
  • It has also been decided to restrict Russia's access to crucial technology, such as semiconductors and advanced software.
  • Russian diplomats and businessmen will lose their privileged access to the EU through visa policy interventions. Measures are also being taken so that the Russian elite can no longer hide money in safe havens in Europe.
  • An export ban for Russia will eventually make it impossible to upgrade Russia's oil refineries, von der Leyen said. After all, these are parts that can only be made and supplied by Europe. That should also have an impact on Russia's income.

The Russian army may be moving very quickly through Ukraine, but the Ukrainians are also hitting back: Friday morning they bombed a military airport on Russian territory.

The Russian air base in Millerovo is located about 16 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, near the economically important city of Rostov-on-Don. On Friday morning, Ukrainian missiles hit the air base.

Zelenskiy Says More Than 130 Dead In Russian Invasion And That Ukraine Has Been 'Left Alone' To Fight.
“They’re killing people and turning peaceful cities into military targets. It’s foul and will never be forgiven,” Zelenskiy said.

The president said all border guards on Zmiinyi (Snake) Island in the Odesa region were killed. All of them will be posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, he said.

Ukraine’s border guard service earlier in the day reported that the island was taken by Russian forces.

Zelenskiy said despite the losses the armed forces of Ukraine were “brilliantly defending the country against one of the most powerful nations in the world.””

Fighting reaches Kyiv suburbs as Russian invasion of Ukraine intensifies

Fighting has reached the northern suburbs of Kyiv after a night of missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital to prepare for a major Russian assault, as president Volodymyr Zelenskiy pleaded for more international help and tougher sanctions.

(...)

Pre-dawn blasts in Kyiv set off a second day of violence after Putin on Thursday defied western warnings to unleash the biggest attack on a European state since the second world war. It has so far claimed at least 150 lives and displaced more than 100,000.

(...)

Witnesses said loud explosions could also be heard in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-biggest city, close to Russia’s border, while air raid sirens sounded over Lviv in the west. A resident told the Guardian the eastern city of Sumy had been taken

In the Ukrainian village of Starognativka near the frontline where separatists have faced off against Kyiv’s forces for years, a local official, Volodymyr Veselkin, said missiles had been raining down all morning and the power was out. “They are trying to wipe the village off the face of the earth,” he said.

(...)

Zelenskiy said in a televised address early on Friday that Putin was targeting civilian as well as military sites. “They say that civilian objects are not a target for them. It is a lie; they do not distinguish in which areas to operate,” he said, vowing to continue defending his country.

The president, who also criticised world leaders for “watching from afar”, spoke after large explosions were heard in the capital, and after a warning from the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, that “all evidence suggests that Russia intends to encircle and threaten” the city. Zelenskiy has vowed to stay in the capital.

The UK defence secretary, Ben Wallace, has said it is the view of British intelligence that Russia intends to invade the whole of Ukraine, but that its army failed to deliver on the first day of its invasion.

The international criminal court said on Friday it might investigate possible war crimes, though did not provide any further details. Putin says Ukraine is an illegitimate state carved out of Russia, although his ultimate aims remain obscure.

Blinken told a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on Thursday that the US believed Moscow had “developed plans to inflict widespread human rights abuses – and potentially worse – on the Ukrainian people”.

Blinken says Putin has his sights on countries beyond Ukraine

SECRETARY BLINKEN: Is it a possibility that Putin goes beyond Ukraine? Sure, it’s a possibility, but there’s something very powerful standing in the way of that. That’s something we call Article 5 of NATO. That means an attack on one member of NATO is an attack on all members of NATO. The President’s been very clear that we will defend every inch of NATO territory. I think that’s the most powerful deterrent against President Putin going beyond Ukraine.
