South Dakota AG Jason Ravnsborg loses prosecutors' support to Jackley

Group of Attorneys Generals supporting JR's rival for attorney general post. But "Among state's attorney's who aren't publicly voicing support for Jackley's campaign are Sully County State's Attorney Emily Sovell and Beadle County State's Attorney Michael Moore."

"Sovell is also the deputy state's attorney in Hyde County overseeing Ravnsborg's prosecution with Moore's assistance."

Slightly off topic... but, not really:

Ohio State Senator Drives While on Video Call
When I saw your post, at first I was just thinking of the hypocrisy & how the rules are just glaringly applied subjectively. But then I thought- wait- how many people were on that call & why the F didn’t they disconnect his arse? If he had pulled a Ravnsborg & killed someone, shouldn’t they all be charged with aiding & abetting vehicular homicide? It’s incredible.

From your link:
the nearly 13-min videoconference — much of which overlapped with Brenner’s drive — showed the seat-belt-using senator repeatedly glancing in the direction of his phone, which had been placed to his right. Images of passing trees and utility poles could be seen poking through imperfections in the computerized office background he had switched on ahead of the journey.”

Stunning. PLUS the video call was for “his legislative colleagues… to tighten rules on using smartphones behind the wheel”. JUST NO WORDS.

I had on my calendar that he was supposed to have some kind of hearing today. I guess I was incorrect and mixed up.

From links:

Nick Nemec, cousin of the victim, questioned the defenses request for more time after the brief status hearing wrapped up.... Nemec also said that a civil trial would be unable to proceed until the criminal one wrapped up. Sioux Falls lawyer Scott Heidepriem is representing Boever’s widow in the civil trial.

The charges Ravnsborg faces stem from the September 2020 crash where he struck and killed Boever just outside of Highmore. The three charges Ravnsborg faces are careless driving, operating a motor vehicle while on a mobile device, and driving outside his lane. (e.d. SMDH ) Each charge is punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. Ravnsborg pled not guilty to all three charges in March.

Ravnsborg claims he did not see Boever when he hit him, and maintains he thought he hit a deer. However, in videos released in March, officers interrogating Ravnsborg say that Boever’s reading glasses were found in the car.

Very glad there will be a civil suit. Unfortunately, JR is a high-level expert on legal proceedings, loopholes & delay tactics. IMO he will delay the criminal misdemeanor proceedings as long as possible, which will also delay impeachment proceedings & civil case as well. Plenty of time to shuffle assets & stash cash. Zero accountability, zero remorse, zero compassion, zero integrity. And the public loses trust every day that disaster remains in office. Moo

AG position in SD is a 4 year term. Ravnsborg was first elected in 2018. It is possible he’ll finagle delays long enough to dodge impeachment until the next election 2022, then step down- by not seeking reelection. This may allow him to keep state pension income & other benefits intact. He’s all about JR, imo. Every move will have an endgame goal. Opinion…

Does anyone know what the statute of limitations are in that state for the family to file a wrongful death civil suit?

No cameras to be allowed during Ravnsborg’s trial

No cameras allowed during trial.

So sad: "Nick Nemec, a cousin of Boever and former Democratic legislator who has served as the family spokesman, said he is disappointed that the trial won’t be held in [as] open a fashion as possible."

"The case remains based in Hyde County, but all hearings and the trial are set in Pierre for the convenience of Moore, the lawyers, and Ravnsborg. Boever’s widow and other family members must drive to the state capital to attend."

Unlike Ravnsborg, Inattentive Aberdeen Driver Kills Groton Motorcyclist, Immediately Faces Manslaughter Charge

"Nine months ago, Attorney General Ravnsborg killed Joe Boever of Highmore through inattentive driving. The state’s attorney in Hyde County took five and a half months to figure out a way to see the evidence of Ravnsborg’s inattentive driving didn’t support manslaughter charges.

Either the Brown County state’s attorney is quicker on the uptake, or Maunu must not be friends with the sheriff."

Hmm... I'd go with the latter...
