Oh my this is truly horrifying.
Atleast this genius managed to completely thwart any chance at trial.

The evidence against him is absolutely staggering.

He’s done.

Actually, to massacre 4 local people says RAGE to me, and nothing about money. MOO
Agreed.

His rage might have had to do with money, but the motive almost certainly wasn’t robbery or anything like that.

This was overkill.

Shooting AND stabbing says rage. It could be he was there to only kill one specific person and the others just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I am really curious to see what it was that led him to do this. Sometimes people snap over the dumbest things.

@smiley4642 - welcome to WS! It's always good to have locals join a case and provide valuable information.

My post was a direct response to member citing 20 years experience in real estate/property management-- who was surprised by reported cash around RJR.

I also have family in Carson, and closer to Mandan, and yup you still have to drive a couple miles from home to clear "no service" message on your phone. And on the first of the month, you'll find Uncle Monte with much more cash on hand than I'm comfortable with collected from his tenants. I don't believe I implied anybody "backwoods" - just offered possible explanation why property management firm might have cash around on April 1st. MOO

With your statement that we do not have the service that others would and reference cell and internet services, it sure felt like a "backwoods" comment. I personally do not know anyone across the state who can't get service unless they have some carrier like AT&T. Other than on or right near a reservation I do not have cell service problems.

I would be surprised that RJR would have cash on hand, especially on that day. Most places here the rent is due around the first (technically the first but there is a "grace period" typically)- and most who would be paying cash (i.e. the very low income) would be paying when they got their money- usually comes on or after the 1st. RJR has been very good at working with those who need that flexibility (I know as I work with very low income individuals). So I would expect them to have that type of cash on hand around the 3rd or 4th of the month. Not the early morning of the 1st.

Lots of people use "headgear" to mean just a hat. However, it does seem a strange word to use here, so I am curious if it was some sort of helmet or mask.

McDonald’s employee said ski mask.

So did I read that correctly? He shot and stabbed the men but didn't shoot Mrs. Cobb? If so, he probably knew he didn't stand a chance against the men with just a knife IMO.

NM I see she was shot to.

It could be headgear with a bright light that makes it difficult for the victim to see properly.

He may have run out of rounds.

Some magazines only hold 9.

No, I think he shot her also, but she died due to a knife wound to the neck.

Edit: I just reread 3 or 4 articles and they all say different things! Imagine that!
One of the articles says three were shot and Falker was just stabbed.
Go figure! We need to find a copy of the Complaint and Affidavit.

Complaint: Mandan murder suspect Chad Isaak tried to deceive surveillance video

[...]
Court documents allege that after shooting and stabbing the victims, Chad Isaak, 44, stole one of the company's vehicles, drove about 1,000 feet (305 meters), then ditched the vehicle and set out on foot to his own truck, parked less than a mile (1.6 kilometers) away at a McDonald's. Authorities were able to trace his steps with help from surveillance video at businesses along the route, the documents say.

The affidavit and complaint filed Friday offer the most details yet on a mystery that has gripped the area since authorities found the bodies of four people at RJR Maintenance and Management in Mandan, a town near the state capital of Bismarck. But the documents do not reveal a motive for the slayings.

Isaak, a chiropractor and U.S. Navy veteran, faces four counts of murder and other charges in the attack. The victims were RJR co-owner Robert Fakler, 52; employee Adam Fuehrer, 42; and married co-workers Lois Cobb, 45, and William Cobb, 50.
[...]
The police affidavit portrays a grisly crime scene in which the Cobbs and Fuehrer were shot and stabbed several times. Fakler had multiple lacerations and stab wounds, and first responders tried in vain to resuscitate him. Fuehrer and the Cobbs were all dead when officers arrived; Lois Cobb's death was attributed to a cut of her neck, though she also had been shot, according to the affidavit.

Surveillance video shows the assailant entering RJR. wearing brightly colored clothing, then leaving in dark clothing less than 15 minutes later, the documents say. An employee at the McDonald's told police that she saw a man wearing camouflage ski mask, dark pants and dark shoes get into a white Ford F-150 that morning.

Police later linked the vehicle to Isaak, who lives in Washburn, about 35 miles north (56 kilometers) of Mandan. At his home, they found clothing matching what they had seen on the videos, spent shell casings, and a knife and gun smelling of bleach, court documents say.

He had to be pretty smart to go to all of those technical schools and graduate.

Apparently patients liked him.

So how could he be so stupid when it comes to security cameras? He seems like a child trying to fool people.

Even in the cities there are still lots of people that pay rent in cash. So I wouldn't be surprised if they sometimes had a lot of cash on hand at the END of the day on the 1st, but I wouldn't think they would on a Monday morning. Regardless, I don't think robbery was any kind of motive here.

There are not a lot of people in the big cities that pay cash to a fairly large property management company. Maybe to someone who rents out a few places... but not a large management company... or at least an honest PM.

gotcha! I use headgear to describe helmets, not a hat but I see what you mean. Thanks!

In the article I read is jsut said her throat was cut but no mention of gunshot wound to her. They said its all caught on video. Good God that must be awful.

ETA: NM, Seattle I see you had that quote that said she had been shot as well. I just didn't read very carefully I guess.

Yeah I guess we know now why they called in the counseling team for first responders.

Ok, fellow Web Sleuthers, I am sorry I am so ignorant of computer skills,
However, the Order for Bond is $1 mil cash.

  • #938
Bond at $1 mil or $1mil cash?

Prosecutor asked for $1 mil cash, but judge only said $1 mil.

I noticed that too. A big difference.
