My mother would iron her sheets, too. I think that was because, back then, sheets were not "permanent press" and were very wrinkled when they came out of the dryer. My mother also ironed dish towels, undershirts and underwear (her mother ironed socks :floorlaugh:- I draw the line on socks :scared:). My mother said she wanted her clothes drawers to look nice and organized (as if everyone was going to look in them :floorlaugh:- "what would the people say" was her motto).
I'm the same as my mother now (I'm turning into my mother as I get older  :giggle:), God love her and rest in peace.

This is so sweet. There are things I do now in my daily life and I think to myself "Ugh...I'm turning into my mother."

I love reading posts by you and others about your moms!

well, my mom didn't do housework as she always had a "maid". I remember as a child when mom left to go somewhere, me and the "maid" played Monopoly and had a good time. :floorlaugh:

Wow. Your mother was lucky to have a maid. My mother always had someone come in twice a year to have the windows and venetian blinds cleaned, but she did the all housework (and she was a fanatical cleaner).
What did your father do?

I cut my nails when they get too long and then file them so they are smooth and have no ragged edges.
When I worked on Wall St., I always went for a manicure and kept them longer, but not too long. Always like beige/rose nail polish.
It was part of "the image", to be polished and professional ("what would the people say" :floorlaugh: :floorlaugh: ).

YESorNO, you made me laugh. I used to get my nails done every week when I worked on Wall Street. Who did you work for? I was at Salomon Brothers, back in the good old days (1980s). I date myself with my preference in colors for nail polish; I've always been one for reds, pinks and corals.

My nails are way too strong and grow way too fast, unlike my hair. In June, I was doing a ton of work in the garden, digging in the ground with my hands and my nails still would not break. I finally cut my nails the other day because they were getting in my way when I type.

The life of a city girl is such that she can get a manicure and it won't get ruined before it wears out. With the work that I do with my hands now, a manicure would not last a day before the polish was chipped or peeling.

I used to love pedicures until my foot got badly sliced with one of those tools for shaving callouses. I had to have the wound cauterized and that was the end of my pedicure days. To me, the best part of a pedicure always was the foot and calf massage. Ooh, yes!

Broke the bank today for a nice dinner to celebrate my dad's birthday and mine tomorrow.

My birthday was on the 20th, but we were at the tail end of a heat wave and it would have been brutal here without air conditioning.

Menu

Hors d"oeuvres:

Guacamole and chips
Deviled eggs
Olive tray

Steamers

Caprese salad

Boiled Maine lobster
Grilled eggplant, zucchini, valdivia onions and portabella mushrooms dressed with rosemary and lemon vinaigrette
Rustic bread

Pineapple gingerbread upsidedown cake with whipped cream

Dad will be 81 years young tomorrow. :bdsong:, Daddy!

Omg, Happy Belated Birthday to you, my dear! And Happy Birthday to your daddy tomorrow! 81...how awesome is that! Sounds like a wonderful evening and SO worth it.

I'm suddenly starving after reading your menu...I LOVE guac and chips! Never had lobster... It all sounds phenomenal.

I want a maid!

I don't want one- it would be more work for me- "what would the people say"-:floorlaugh: I would clean before she came. I get crazy cleaning when someone is coming to fix something in the house :floorlaugh:. What would they say. My mother drummed that in my ears :floorlaugh: I remember when she came to my first apartment after I was married- she said the kitchen floor had a dark ring around the edges (because of the wax build-up). We use to wax the floors back then and had to take the old wax off with ammonia. Guess I didn't do a good job :floorlaugh:

I'm almost 34 and I've never had a pedicure! My feet are so ticklish...I'm afraid I'd kick someone in the face if they touched my feet. And i have such ugly toes...my second toe is longer than my big toe and curves funny lol.

Feet are not pretty!

A pedicure just helps make them prettier:) it's relaxing, the foot massage is to die for....

When I first started on Wall St. (back in the 70's), I worked for a small muni bond co- Barr Brothers. Then went to Bache & Co (now Prudential, I think) and also, Carl Marks- the foreign co. and National Financial. Left Wall St after I had my last son.
Never had a pedicure- I did my own toenails. I have pretty feet :floorlaugh:

Once upon at time, a very long time ago, my mother used to iron. I remember her putting our dresses, which had been starched and rolled up, into the fridge, to prepare them for ironing. That was when either spray cans had not been invented or we could not afford them. Starch used to be mixed with water and put into a bottle with a shaker top and then sprinkled on the clothes. Not sure why they went into the fridge.

That was when I was a little girl. I don't remember my mother ironing much other than a table cloth for a holiday dinner once we got older. With five kids, she tired of all that and who could blame her? Permanent press and clothes dryers really liberated women.

I seem to remember that my father liked his boxer shorts ironed. My liberated mother probably told my dad what he could do with his ironed boxer shorts.

Lost my mom less than two years ago. Miss her, but I will always have her love and memories.

I used to have a housekeeper come once a week. I found myself running around like a nut cleaning... I didn't want her to think we were slobs... was a waste of money...

I remember the shaker! My mom ironed boxers too!

I don't even know where my iron is or if I actually own one. I think I got one as a wedding gift?!

I live in an apartment and the handle on my toilet broke this weekend. I SCRUBBED my bathroom before I called the maintenance team to fix it. I could never have a maid.

BBM My mother did the same thing. The clothes were rolled-up wet and put in the fridge so they wouldn't dry-out before she ironed. I learned how to iron my father's white shirts (I was proud because my mother said I ironed them better than my older sister did- she burned one of them- :floorlaugh:). I liked to iron listening to the radio.

Bless you, Linda! :floorlaugh: You have beautiful toes! I'd post a pic of mine that I found on my phone but the stupid attachment feature isn't working for me. Probably just as well lol.

I know you are adopted. Did you ever want to find your birth parents?
Are you close to your older siblings?
