Here it says from police sources that a witness saw him walking towards the sea, thats why they are currently searching the sea and that they dont believe a crime was commited.

I wonder if the witness its his date, the american woman.

It was WAY too cold that night for a voluntary swim.
Shockingly cold- not comfortable.
I don’t think his wallet fell out.
It was likely stolen and emptied of cash then dumped into the water imho
I was in Spain over the Christmas period and I saw a lot of people in the sea at night times despite pretty low temperatures.

Large amounts of alcohol & being on holiday does strange things to people.

Come on, he got drunk, walked off with a lady, maybe still with her. This was last night?
It would be a wonderful outcome if this were the case, but his phone and wallet have been found so my guess is he's not hooked up with anyone.
Update wallet found floating at sea.

If it's empty then it could have been tossed along with his phone, but where is Jimmy? Wish we knew if there was money in it or not. Fear he's going to be found in the same area in a few days.

The water temperature in Barcelona now is 14° Centigrades (57°F), and that's warmer than the average water temperature in Helsinki, Finland, in July/August.

I wonder if Jimmy had his location sharing turned on and that is how LE found his phone and who had it? Losing his phone could have sent him into panic mode. He may have not known how to get back to his airbnb nor been able to reach his friends and family.

Sadly I think that the phone was either found and taken, or even if his phone was taken from him, it was a separate incident from him going out to have a swim after drinking or whatever… The alcohol probably made him feel like he could be enjoying a time in the water, probably made him feel happy to be somewhere new and different… His life seemed fairly full, so hopefully it wasn’t an intentional self cancel, but my thought is that he got swept out after going out there… In college sometimes after drinking, your mind gets very philosophical and you start thinking about things, and if he was alone on the beach at that time of the Morning, he may have been soaking it all in… I hope his passing was peaceful, but that’s what it sounds like happened in my opinion… In Austin, Texas, there’s a big conspiracy of a serial killer because they keep finding young men in the lake by a street of bars… I think in Chicago as well but for whatever reason, the water draws folks after a night of indulging. I think the same thing happened here. Hopefully since his wallet was found, they’ll be able to find him too.

I agree. Jimmy and a friend go to the beach (maybe to make out) he loses his wallet or phone, panics as you say, tries to find it, and gets caught in a riptide? Jmo

Yes, Barcelona has been like it for years. Prague is another one.

We were in Barcelona about 15 years ago. I was already a young grandma, don’t drink, and did get ripped off there but by a restaurateur on Las Ramblas.

It was in Tunisia that I was almost pickpocketed.

There are certainly many places where nefarious locals prey on unwitting tourists. (I guess here it would be Times Square).

When it’s a young college kid, at a club, probably drinking, and near a body of water——-unfortunately, we have seen this endless times. Especially so when they disappear with someone they don’t know.

I agree, so far it seems to have echoes of Natalie Holloway. I would say females are typically more vulnerable but we’ve all seen cases of missing young men after a night of partying.

Praying for a good outcome but sadly don’t expect it. Surprised actually that his phone was recovered and hope it’ll help somehow.

ETA:
Oh, just now saw above his wallet was found in the water. Uh-oh.

JMO and experience.

IF he did go to the beach with the woman he met, and he disappeared into the ocean, why would that woman not immediately call for help or the police.

What is the tidal situation there? It's hard imo to imagine him going into the water with the wallet intentionally, but would it have been washed in overnight if he left it in a pile on the shore with perhaps his shoes, phone etc to take a quick plunge? Other non-nefarious option imo is that he left it, didn't come back, and someone opportunistically went through it later for anything of value and then pitched it. I'm assuming that imo at least his ID was still in it since it was identified as his, unless he had such an unusual wallet that it was readily apparent without -- monogrammed or something like that.

(NewsNation) — Spanish police say they cannot confirm reports that the wallet of a missing University of Alabama student was found in the water near a club where he was last seen.

James “Jimmy” Gracey, 20, from Elmhurst, Illinois, hasn’t been seen since the early hours of Tuesday. His mother, Therese Marren Gracey, said on social media that her son was in Barcelona visiting friends who were studying abroad.

Chicago news station WLS-TV reported Thursday that police revealed they found Gracey’s wallet floating in the water near the beachside club Shôko. Investigators were reportedly seen searching the perimeter around where the wallet was found on Wednesday morning.

But later Thursday, the Spanish police released a statement saying it “cannot confirm” that detail:

At the moment, we have little new information to share. We can inform you that investigators are pursuing several lines of inquiry, one of which focuses on the search at sea.

Today, the search at sea is being conducted by helicopter and the maritime unit.

We cannot confirm the information regarding the wallet.

The investigation remains open, and we have no further information at this time.

It’s a pleasure to be of assistance.

We are assuming that she's been found and interviewed. I think LE must know what happened with her or they would be asking the public to help identify her or find her. The video that alerted them to foul play may have her on it.

She may have left and he may have decided to go swimming if water appeared calm

I get that inebriated people and young people do wild things, but it was pretty chilly this week, it's not 'beach' weather. When we were there last week we were in sweaters/jackets/pants the entire time. The weather looks similar this week.

That said, in the last known photo he does appear to be wearing a tshirt and pants. Maybe fine for the club, but he would have been chilly outside.
