You think he left identifying plates on the car he used? I assumed he likely had scrubbed the VIN number and swapped plates. But I think they can run an engine serial number and get a VIN just takes longer to get there.
He’s incredibly stupid if I’m wrong. Also don’t think they would have let her leave the home. Surely they were there immediately, not just a phone in to her?
Turns out he put fake paper plates on both front and back that said "POLICE."
You can see a clear shot of the front "plate" in this news video at 2m 47s.
At first I thought that was dumb because who would think a plate without numbers was real. But apparently in Minnesota, police cars that have clear police markings on them don't need to display a plate. So, it would pass at first glance if any of the victim's glanced out their window before answering the door.
However, his manifesto was in his car. While I didn't see any article say his name early on, none of them said anything about an unsigned or anonymous manifesto either. While a few people like Dylan Roof have posted their manifesto online anonymously, I can't think of any examples of people who left unsigned written ones.
While his name didn't start coming out in media until later in the day, at that point they were keeping A LOT of details close to the vest, not even releasing the door camera image of the shooter at the victims' doors to say "keep an eye out for this mask--if you see it in a park trash can or remember selling one like this to someone recently, call the police."
But, I could easily be wrong. This is all JMO, IMO, etc. Police didn't use a battering ram on the house where he rented a room until around 1:45. Why did it take that long? Had they really not talked to VB's wife before she would have had to be leaving home around 8? If they didn't talk to her until they stopped her in Onamia between 10-11. Maybe they didn't know about the rented room in the house until then?
