SUSPECT IN CUSTODY MN - 2 Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses were shot by someone impersonating a police officer, JUNE 13,2025

  • #1,001

Yes, he was targeting two other legislators, one of whom wasn't home.

There seems to be a problem between the federal and state prosecutors. The feds are demanding to try their federal charges before the state is allowed to pursue murder charges.

I hope the state ignores the DOJ head and proceeds with their own murder cases, as they're much more likely to result in the killer actually staying in prison and not being pardoned. Blathering around in the news media about the death penalty doesn't mean anything if the POTUS ends up pardoning him.

JMO, its possible Boetler was inspired by POTUS, so not appropriate for them to take the lead on this case.

Trump has expressed support for some of the extreme, violent evangelical Christians who Boetler was affiliated with. It's a conflict of interest.

Moriarty should ignore Bondi and proceed. Otherwise, the case will get bogged down. They might even let him out of jail.
I have full confidence in Attorney General Bondi, and our current administration that the case will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Per usual, the murder and attempted murder charges should proceed first. The federal charges in this case are secondary. JMO

It's common knowledge that its harmful to any state's murder case if details of the evidence are dragged through the news media to taint a potential jury pool before the trial. Good prosecutors don't try their case in the news media, nor should they allow another prosecutor to do the same.

Normally, professional federal prosecutors would know that and respect the need to get a conviction in the murder trial first before broadcasting the details of evidence to the public.

There's no doubt the details of evidence in this case, particularly digital and DNA evidence, will be taken apart by conspiracy theorists and other nutjobs on podcasts and social media. It begs the question whether this information should be given to these vultures to distort and propagandize prior to the murder trial.

Ms Bondi's insistence on pushing the murder trial aside is evidence of her lack of experience in these matters. JMO

Right wing conspiracy theories being spread about the tragic, terrifying murders

Within hours of the shootings, rightwing social media accounts with millions of followers manufactured false conspiracy theories about the suspect and his motives, falsely portraying the man whose friends say he is an evangelical Christian Trump supporter as a radical leftwing assassin and attempting to paint him as a political ally of Tim Walz, the Democratic governor and former vice-presidential candidate.

Even Elon Musk was tweeting conspiracy theories

RSBM for focus

Not to argue or nitpick, but just to point out that he shot 8 bullets and 9 bullets respectively into the surviving wife and husband, and I don't know how many into each of his victims who died, as well as one or more into the dog in one of the homes.

And on that point, I am astounded that those 2 had any chance whatsoever of surviving, having been shot THAT many times each!! I admit I thought if you were ever shot 8 times, you died. But both of them are expected to live, I believe. Is that unusual?? Is it a record??? Seems like that would be rare to happen. Maybe medicine has just gotten better at saving GSW victims.

You’re not nitpicking at all— if anything, your accuracy only further emphasizes the extent this terrorist went through to try to make sure his targets were executed. It’s astonishing that they survived, and a testament to the strength of love and resilience in the face of ugliness and hate.

Actually, the prosecutor in the state case against VB is on board with the feds' taking the lead right now, as the state wants to pursue first-degree murder charges but in order to do that, they need to impanel a grand jury to hear the evidence and return a bill of indictment. In the meantime the feds are moving forward with their case. The state and feds are working together on this, as they normally do (e.g. the case of Mangione in New York).

Attorney General Bondi has extensive experience as the former Attorney General of Florida, having worked extensively with state prosecutors and federal prosecutors as the head attorney for the state. She's eminently qualified to serve as head attorney for the nation.

Maybe, just so long as VB hasn't made any big donations to Bondi. moo

Not really.

On Wednesday, Moriarty said in an interview with The Associated Press that she told federal prosecutors that she wants her office to try Boelter first. But she said she came away with the impression that the U.S. Attorney’s Office intends to exercise its legal authority to go first.

Moriarty said she wants the first chance “because this horrific crime happened in our community” and the lawmakers represented parts of Hennepin County. And she pointed out that her office tries murder cases all the time, and that it is the largest prosecutors’ office in the state.

“We have all the resources and experience to handle these cases because that’s what we do,” she said. ”We feel that we owe it to the community to prosecute this case, and we would like to go first.”

A crime like this should be a wake–up call in the sense that violence against women, and misogyny as whole, should be taken more seriously. It infuriates me to think this isn’t being viewed as hate crime against women: we are talking about a man, fueled by religious extremism, who centered his violence around women who made it into the upper levels of government, and various groups who supported women’s health care. I would love to hear any of the people involved in this prosecution justify why this isn’t an act of terrorism against women.

I agree that resentment of certain kinds of females might have been his underlying psychological motive.

<modsnip -off topic>

I don't believe there is a legal basis for tailoring criminal charges for extremely subtle emotional/psychological underlying motives for crimes, and I don't see why that should infuriate anyone.

The whole business of 'hate crime' is, in my opinion, an ongoing experiment in social engineering using the legal system, and I'm not convinced it's actually working, since it seems to incite as much anger and hatred, as reduce it.

It seems recently media is afraid to call out crazy. We see it every day.
"Sanewashing" is a word I've heard a lot recently to describe a status quo that in reality is anything but "sane." If the person acting irrationally or inexcusably is part of a powerful/dominant group that the media is afraid to question or criticize: sanewashing.

So this guy has the video of VB smashing the passenger side front window of his vehicle parked in the back of the house….with cowboy hat and jacket on.

The quote from the local prosecutor that I linked earlier in the thread read differently. Perhaps she changed her mind? The last I heard, she planned to wait for the grand jury to meet .

LE is still gathering evidence in their investigation. There’s a lot to gather and process, new video and other digital evidence coming in. They don’t know if others were involved yet. There’s no need to rush, he’s in custody and isn’t going anywhere.

Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette released this statement tonight about the night they survived multiple gunshot wounds in their home. Prayers for their family…

What wonderful people they are. I’m so glad they’re improving and their daughter wasn’t seriously harmed. She was a brave young woman who helped save many lives with her quick thinking.

I hope they’re improving and can fully recover and return to happy, productive lives. Prayers for them.

MOO He is all dressed and cleaned up ready for the media.
Must have been traveling with a shaving kit.

He doesn't look the least bit bothered.

Which I find atrocious.

He is taking this case to the media, expect a lot if justification for his murders as in killing the enemy is not murder.
