this is a huge operation, run by the government and paid for by the King.
He who has the gold, makes the rules. I guess he's made the rule.

If there were any SNAFUs, it would be a huge embarrassment for the Thai government and that won't be allowed to happen. Hence, tossing the media away from the cave entrance. (which I agree with, totally)

It will be a huge PR thing if it all works out, tourism is their major source of money, so they want the world to see a 'good outcome'. PR.

Hate to quote myself, sorry. Just wanted to clarify that 'good outcome' doesn't necessarily rule out any more deaths. It means 'appearances' and optics are good.

I hope there are no more deaths but one cannot rule it out until this is over.
They are not responsible for people dying but they are responsible if doesn't look like a very good attempt to save them. I think, given the weather etc, they have all done a wonderful job so far. Maybe, they could have tried earlier but I wasn't at the strategy meetings so cannot say.:p

I hope that so! The twitter post said testing in pool in LA.

I cannot see these being used this time for rescue of the boys.
But after testing in a cave environment maybe. Perhaps try them out bringing out the equipment.

Such fantastic news about the four getting out! Amazing. I will say I feel nervous about one of the four. I know the reporter recanted his original post, the one saying one of the four was not in great condition upon getting out. I have a feeling this is actually true. I hope it is not. But I wouldn’t be surprised if authorities were not happy with the release of this negative news and had him say it was inaccurate reporting.

I am very concerned with the new rain. I am frightened the water will rise, conditions will decline, and that currents that are dangerous will develop. I also see the importance of taking the time for the conditions to be as ideal as possible in order to most safety carry out rescue. But should monsoon season get into full swing I worry they won’t have time to dry out areas etc. I am really hoping they can do this!!!!

They're still pumping out water. Hopefully there isn't more rain than pumped water.

To be able to start weeks ago, they would have to be psychic.
No, this has been going on for 15 days, already. They have only gotten involved in the last couple of days. But more important, if they were really concerned about cave rescues, they should have been developing the equipment before this. You don't develop rescue equipment as it is needed, because that is too late. This is nothing but a publicity stunt.

Daily Mail has identified the rescued boys. Hope this isn't a repeat.
Wish I could make a link.
Luddite here.

It would be great if FIFA extends the invitation to the boys and the coach to the next World Cup final. I don't think they can make it to Russia in time.

For this year, I'm rooting for England to take the title. Divers from UK found them after all. Go Harry Kane, especially for the boy named Pong.

It looks like it was being tested or used in a cave dive here, this was on Twitter this morning but I hadn’t had enough coffee that I remember where I saved it from. I’m wondering if the Thai government is allowing “their” people to take photos to release as the govt wishes.

Awesome!

I don't get the hate. He didn't have to do this. He could have sent in some engineers and some batteries and left it at that. Publicity with far less effort and expense .

How many other billionaires and companies have created a completely custom piece of equipment, from initial design to build and testing, in a couple of days, for the express purpose of rescuing these kids?

I don't get it either.

I love the end of the video when the guy pops out of the rocket pod dry and in perfect condition and the science nerds woo-hoo and clap :) No doubt they love their job.

4 boys rescued from Thailand cave as next phase of mission to begin in hours

At 10 a.m. local time Sunday, 13 foreign divers and five Thai Navy SEALs entered the cave to begin the operation. Ten divers headed to chamber 9, where the boys are located, while the others took positions along the difficult route out of the cave system.

According to the plan that was successful today, rescuers and the four boys were given one hour of rest in the third chamber before they set out on the last part of the underground odyssey on foot, walking through muddy areas or floating in areas.

Osatanakorn said that the oxygen level inside the cave needs to be replenished before rescuers embark on the next phase of the mission.

Thailand cave rescue: 4 boys successfully rescued from cave -- live updates
Engineers sent by Elon Musk remain on standby
The California tunnel company run by Elon Musk is continuing to maintain a presence at the Thai cave. Sam Teller, spokesman for Boring Co., said Sunday that the company has four engineers who are "offering support in any way the government deems useful."

Musk tweeted early Saturday that he was working with a team from his SpaceX rocket company to build a "tiny, kid-size submarine" to transport the children. But Saturday night, he tweeted that the cave was now closed for the rescue by divers. "Will continue testing in LA in case needed later or somewhere else in the future," he wrote.

Musk says the sub would be light enough to be carried by two divers and small enough to get through narrow cave gaps.

The SEALs say five of the 18 rescue divers were Thai, with American, Australian and Japanese divers assisting in the effort.

I am pretty sure most believed them to be drowned once they went missing.

Hope for the best, expect the worst .

Aren't they going to have to refill the oxygen canisters after the next group? If they could only do four today before having to rest and refill, how can they do 9 tomorrow?
Refilling tanks isn't the problem. Limited number of skilled divers is the problem.

I'd don't know for sure, but maybe the other divers are for back up and support. Normally in any rescue operation there will be a back up team on standby, to rescue the rescuers, if necessary. It's usually called a Rapid Intervention Team, or something like that.

You're right, KaaBoom. only some went all the way to the boys (I think 10, but can't remember definitively) and the rest are stationed along the way for assistance. Maybe to have extra oxygen ready, or if they needed other aid, I really don't know their exact duties.

FIFA should really offer an all expense paid trip to the group of
British Divers. they are the true heroes in all this, IMO.
