Thailand cave rescue begins with four out of 12 boys freed in day of drama

An elite group of 10 international cave divers, working with five Thai navy Seals, entered the cave at about 10am, with some heading for the boys’ chamber and others stationed a few hundred metres away at an area called Monk’s Junction.

A second group of three foreign divers entered at about 2pm “to support diving efforts”, according to a statement issued by the command centre, with additional rescuers in place helping operate a rope system in a difficult middle stretch of the track.

[Richard Harris, an Australian doctor with extensive cave-diving experience, ,examined the and approved the operation]

On Sunday morning, Osatanakorn said the one-mile path from the cave entrance to the third chamber that has been a staging ground for the operation was not completely dry but mostly walkable. “Yesterday the water levels were the lowest they had been,” he said.

“Although there are some slightly difficult parts [where] we have to bend or crawl, we can say that we can just walk through it.”

He declined to say whether the boys would need to dive at all in the 1.1-mile journey from where they are sheltering to the third chamber. “What I can tell you is that there are many parts that they can walk,” he said.

A 25-year-old Thai navy Seal, who declined to be named, described one of the most difficult parts of the journey. “The hole is really small, I have to take off my air tank to crawl through it. As I do, I feel the edges of the hole on both my back and chest,” he said.

So that little sub looks pretty darn slick, but they need to rush as it will take time to get to Thailand unless it goes on a Concord. I would also hope it is equipped with emergency communication in the event the oxygen fails or whatever. Go Elon!

I didn't think the boys were being given tanks, but were sharing an air-line with the accompanying diver. Would the diver be likely to have both oxygen and air? In any event, I feel a bit better knowing they would be sharing a line - it sounds a bit safer.

It is my understanding that the boy's tanks are being carried by the rescue diver, with a line to the boy's full-face mask.

I thought they were already in Thailand.

(I don't really like Elon Musk because of reasons, but I'll respect him for life if his contribution expedites the rescue)

Even if it doesn't help with this rescue, maybe the technology can be used in future rescues.

its just past 2 AM there now. I hope the divers go back in around 9 AM as they did yesterday, maybe a bit earlier. So, approx 7 hours until the next 'rescue operation'?? Fingers crossed.

What is the rationale for not allowing the rescued boys to be with their families or not tell their families they have been rescued?

It could stir up a hornets nest with the other parents of the children still in the cave; explaining why the children that went out first were chosen, etc. That's my speculation.

I hope that so! The twitter post said testing in pool in LA.
I think that was taken at another time. There is another pic I saw somewhere of them either loading or unloading several boxes on or off a plane.

Grateful they're not showing the boys.
I felt really bad earlier today after someone posted a video of one boy being taken on a stretcher to a helicopter.
Please... they said no photos or filming for a reason =(
