Every now and then, we see a real hero. This is the last photo taken of Sgt. Saman Kunan before he lost his life on Thursday while returning from delivering oxygen to the boys trapped in the cave. He retired from the Thai Navy, but volunteered to help.

That obviously contradicts many other articles stating this was a planned trip and this coach frequently took them on various adventures, to the point that some of the parents thought it was too dangerous and one parent even said they tried to get their child to quit the team over these type of trips.

I suspect this particular article misunderstood which coach was called. precious reports say the HEAD COACH (diff. person) was called by parents and he/they went to the cave to look for the adventurers. "coach Ek" was always with them. That's my understanding, anyway.

Watching BBC live fro the scene, he confirms one boy and the coach are still at the field hospital and will be on the way to Chiang Rai soon.

Hearing applause in the background so I’m hoping one of the rescuers is out.

Many different languages all singing the same song of love risking their own lives for 12 little boys and one beloved coach.

These heroes wore flippers.

My heart has been humbled to witness the 4 corners of the earth joining together to save these blessed 13.

WOW just WOW!
A lesson learned.

“Thailand will now cheer for the England football team because of the help from the English divers. I am very happy. The whole of Thailand is happy.” 64-year-old Manop Suksaard came to watch the boys arriving at the hospital tonight. #ThailandCaveRescue #worldcup pic.twitter.com/srbUlW3Zmc

The search and rescue effort was described by the mission chief and Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn as a "United Nations team".

It involved personnel and volunteers from the UK, China, Myanmar, Laos, Australia, the US, Japan and many other countries.

Locals near the cave complex cooked food for those on site, cleaned divers' clothing and ferried others around for free.

Specialist divers from around the world risked their lives to enter the cave system in search of the boys.

The atmosphere now at the cave site is one of joy, but many will be thinking of Saman Gunan, the Thai ex-Navy diver who died while on a re-supply mission in the cave.

He will be honoured with a state funeral

All boys and coach rescued from Thai cave
