George W. Bush has a brother named George who is a senator? It must have been a long day 'cause I'm getting confused.

I thought the brothers were Gov. Jeb and Neil(?).

Are we talking about George, Jr., who's the son of Jeb?

It's starting to sound like the Bible, or something. :)

Lubbock is a WHOLE different place from the Texas I grew up in. Kind of like the Sahara desert vs. the oasis. Actually I have to say I've NEVER been to the valley, and I'm not sure I've been to the Panhandle. I have been to west Texas and some parts of East Texas.

Basically, Texas is a big place, and one part is as different as another.

If you say it ain't Texas, Martha, then it ain't Texas in my book neither. I already noticed it don't fit on the same page of the Road Atlas.

Not a real senator brother. Remember the Newhart show with the stupid brothers 'and my other brother George'. My senator, Geroge Allen, reminds me so much of the President I refer to him as the 'other brother George'.

I did not know Bush was born in New Haven, CT until just now.

Ah, I see. My condolences. Of course, we have the Terminator as governor, so it's always something.

Well, to be fair, I've never been there. It's probably just fine if you like F L A T, and Nothin' to do except go to church...

Oh well, it may be just a fine place to raise children and all. But I'm telling you, we've never heard anything about the trouble George W. Bush got into in Midland, because, well, there was nothing to do.

I'm sure his daddy had something to do with the news releases there.

P.S. Read Annie Proulx "That Old Ace in the Hole", if you want to read a satirical book about the Texas Panhandle; (she wrote Brokeback Mountain) it's quite entertaining and gives you a feel for :

I think Midland is a really nice place. A good wholesome place to raise a family. They also have a great Jr. College. JMO

It probably is, if you like flat. I have this thing; once you're used to hills you have to be in the hills. That's just the way I am and the way my father was. It's hard to get used to flat. I went up to Chicago 3 weeks ago, and I was like, "Is there a hill anywhere?"

I have begun to think a smaller town is better for raising a family in many ways. George W. was in Midland 20, 30 years ago? It's just too "homogeneous" for me; I like diversity.

Well here I was thinkin' I know stuff :p ....I thought GW's brother was Jeb?

<<Are we talking about George, Jr., who's the son of Jeb?>>

And I always thought GW was from Midland too.
So, he wasn't born there, but grew up there...
I had an online friend once who lived in Midland and made a big point of telling me GW was from there so I had just assmued he was born there.

I might also take this opportunity to apologise for calling GW names.

Jeana, I promise you I get no pleasure from saying things that upset young heros. So what do you propose instead? Do we simply accept dishonest and immoral wars to avoid upsetting those who are most hurt by them? Don't we owe public servants better than that?

As for the Chicks, when they say something in Britain (our closest ally), they are inappropriate. When they say something here at home, they are whining. Can we establish the correct (and apparently very narrow) forum for their speech?

I think about our Vietnam Vets and the home coming that they received. I listen to them talk about it. The way that they were treated was something that will never be forgotten. There is no way that our troops should receive the same treatment...while they are over their fighting for our rights and freedom or when they come home after this whole thing ends. It wasn't the President that was treated like crap when Vietnam ended...it was the troops and they took the things that people said very personally even though they may not have agreed with that war. I still believe that our purpose here is to support our troops and we aren't doing that by acting like many people are acting and talking like they are talking. If we know it affects our men and women over their then we should stop it. What is more important...voicing our opinions because we have the right to do that or standing behind our troops and helping to keep their morale up? We have the right to speak out about anything we want to anyone that we want about anyone or anything that we want. Do we always do it? No, we don't because we know what the consequences could be in some situations. If you think your boss is wrong about something that you think is important do you stand on your right to speak your opinion to him or do you zip it up because you know that he will point you to the door if you voice your opinion because you have the right?
Sometimes we just need to use some common sense.

It's interesting that nobody here has suggested Toby Keith and Charlie Daniels shouldn't air their views from the concert stage. And why shouldn't they?

I've never heard of Toby Keith using his concerts to get up on stage and make his political views known. He has written many songs on his views and he sings them at his concerts but I highly doubt if the people who paid to go hear Toby sing want him to stand up there and talk about his views. When people go to a concert they want to hear the music and that is all they are there for. I've been to numerous country music concerts from Brooks and Dunn, Brad Paisley, Martina McBride, Alan Jackson, Reba McIntyre, Kenny Chesney and on and on and NEVER once have they mentioned their political views. We pay to hear them sing and they sing. I for one wouldn't appreciate their taking my time to present their political views.

Why shouldn't Toby or Charlie Daniels air their views from the concert stage? Maybe they are just using common sense and know that people pay to hear them sing and that is what they do. They leave their views at home.

We're talking about kids here. Most of these guys are between 19-27 years old. Many are away from their families for the first time (at least for this period of time).

My baby brother is 22....:( He knows what he signed up for. But he is also scared to death. It makes me ill to think of what he is going through...Thank you Jeana for your support and everyone else.....:blowkiss: It really means alot. When my brother came home for leave last year he came to my house and I took him out to lunch with my son and while we were there 2 different couples came up to us to pay our bill at the restaraunt, of course only one could but they were so nice and my brothers face just beamed with pride. He was so proud at the response he got from all the people coming up to him thanking him for him serving Our Country...I was a proud sister too....:blushing:

I have to disagree. When people write and sing songs, they very often are expressing their feelings and views on many things. It can be love, past experiences, about war, about peace. John Lennon wrote a famous song - Imagine _ it expressed his views about peace, religion, material things, and many other things.

Some parts of it are controvertial, but it is played and loved to this day. Toby's song also very much expressed a "view", a feeling about what we were going through at that time and being patriotic. Most were inspired and wouldn't oppose that view, but it was still a view.

No, they shouldn't be hurt.

(a) It's like saying some people hated Abraham Lincoln or John F. Kennedy or Jesus Christ. It's a mark of their superiority relative to the small minds of their times. (No, I'm not equating Holly with Jesus. But no Christian is offended if you say the Pharisees hated Jesus. Given the NT view of the Pharisees, it isn't an insult.)

(b) Buddy Holly has been the subject of numerous books, many TV shows and an Academy Award-winning film (all highly laudatory, by the way). He's public domain.

No need to bring it up? Why not bring it up? (See (b) above.) The songwriter is making the point that sometimes a public figure is reviled by some in his own time, but respected at some point in the future. No doubt she hopes time will look favorably on her.

Well, the brothers WERE hurt, so I suppose you should tell them they're wrong.

Absolutely not. But pretending a war of imperialism is somehow noble got tens of thousands of Americans killed to no purpose in Vietnam.

Let's don't make that mistake again.

What are you talking about?!

Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)
Toby Keith

American Girls and American Guys
We’ll always stand up and salute
We’ll always recognize
When we see Old Glory Flying
There’s a lot of men dead
So we can sleep in peace at night
When we lay down our head

My daddy served in the army
Where he lost his right eye
But he flew a flag out in our yard
’til the day that he died
He wanted my mother, and my brother, my sister and me
To grow up and live happy
In the land of the free.

Now this nation that I love
Has fallen under attack
A mighty sucker punch came flyin in
From somewhere in the back
Soon as we could see clearly
Through our big black eye
Man, we lit up your world
Like the 4th of July

Hey Uncle Sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
Started shakin her fist
And the eagle will fly
And its gonna be hell
When you hear Momma Freedom
Start ringin her bell
It’ll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Ahw brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue

Justice will be served
And the battle will rage
This big dog will fight
When you rattle his cage
You’ll be sorry that you messed with
The U.S. of A.
'Cause we'll put a BOOT in your ass
It's the American way

Hey Uncle Sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
Started shakin’ her fist
And the eagle will fly
Man, it’s gonna be hell
When you hear Momma Freedom
Start ringin’ her bell
And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you now
Haw brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue

That is a song though, its not like he gets on stage and says what is right or wrong as far as he is concerned, He is singing music. I think there is a bit of a difference. Natalie gets on stage and flat out says she is embarassed to be from Texas or whatever the heck she said and is bashing bush. I have not heard TK every do anything like that....

Actually, I don't know the brothers were hurt. I suspect they were responding to some reporter who gave them a quotation out of context and then demanded an immediate response.

But if the Holly family actually looked at the lyrics, thought about them and THEN decided they were offended, they are morons.

Feel free to pass the word on to them.
