Sky News understands two others on board the vessel are French submersible pilot, Paul-Henry Nargeolet, and chief executive and founder of OceanGate Expeditions, Stockton Rush.

Interesting article from a journalist who did the trip last year.

They had bad weather, and bad communications and lost contact with the ship for several hours. They never actually found the Titanic wreck on that trip.

This video was mentioned in the article

Per CBS News
OceanGate's submersible, The Titan, is the only five-person sub in the world capable of reaching the Titanic wreck, which sits 2.4 miles below the sea surface. CBS News "Sunday Mornings" correspondent David Pogue joined the crew of the vessel, along with a small group of intrepid tourists, for a journey to see the world's most famous shipwreck last year.
As he got situated in the vessel, which he said had about as much room inside as a minivan, Pogue said he "couldn't help noticing how many pieces of this sub seemed improvised, with off-the-shelf components," including a video game controller that was used to pilot the sub.

Are you kidding me? A video game controller was used to pilot the submersible. This is unbelievable.

This is so heartbreaking! Whatever happened, happened fast. I wonder how long it took for them to start looking for the sub.
Yes, I think, if they are no longer alive, that it happened instantly to all of them at the same time. Can you imagine 2 miles deep of water on top of you? The pressure..

The vessel operates by pinging back a message every 15 minutes to signal to those ashore that it is safe, however Sky News understands that those pings have not been heard from this vessel for more than seven hours.

Sky News has located the Polar Prince tugboat that is on the water around 700m away from the Titanic wreck site, via the website MarineTraffic.

Here are the gps coordinates, fwiw:

They lost track of a jetliner in the Pacific Ocean with hundreds of satellites out there. The ocean is vast.

Yep, you’d think it could never happen again! This sub is carefully monitored and it’s gone into the water from a floating platform in the ocean, on a directly programmed course to Titanic. It shouldn’t have gone astray.

I’m hoping the pilot and passengers (aka crew) are blissfully unaware they’re lost and it’s just the tracking that’s stopped working. Seems unlikely though.

Per CNN (TV), The company waited for two hours before reporting it to the Coast Guard.
Contact was lost 1:45 hours after it started the dive.
As of approx 2:00 CST today, the submersible has been missing for about 24 hours.

And I’m not claustrophobic but I’d be claustrophobic! That space is tiny.

Interesting account here from someone who’s done the trip:

The disclaimer “This experimental vessel has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body, and could result in physical injury, emotional trauma, or death”. Yeah I’ll pass, thanks. Crikey.

Currents in the sea, who knew? I’m honestly gobsmacked they’ve lost track of it in this day and age. Ridiculous.
Emphasis mine.
THIS ^^^ !

Since I'm unfamiliar with subs and submersibles such as this tour craft --- so from a layman's pov : wouldn't there be a plan laid out such the the ones planes use, except showing the area they descended and the palce they planned to view ?
I realize an unexpected current could sweep them from the planned path.
So sorry for the worried families of the missing !!

Praying for a miracle; let them be found alive.
