Police said Emanuel Kidega Samson, 25, of Murfreesboro, shot and killed a woman in the parking lot of Burnette Chapel Church of Christ on Pin Hook Road in Antioch as the church dismissed at 11:15 from morning services.

An usher confronted the shooter while inside the church and was violently pistol whipped, Aaron said. During the confrontation with the usher, the gunman shot himself in the left chest, Aaron said.

After killing the woman in the parking lot, the shooter entered the main sanctuary door, which was at the rear of the sanctuary, Aaron said at a later press conference.

"After doing so he began indiscriminately shooting," he said.

A church usher confronted the gunman, Aaron said, and was "pistol whipped" by the man.

"There was a significant struggle between the two," he said, adding, "During the struggle, the gunman shot himself, probably not intentionally, in the left pectoral muscle."

Aaron later identified the usher as 22-year-old Robert Engle.

"He's the hero, he's the person who stopped this madness," Metropolitan Nashville Police Department Chief Steve Anderson said at a news conference Sunday afternoon.

The usher, who was a licensed gun owner, went to his vehicle and retrieved his own fire arm, returned to the church and "made sure that the gunman didn’t make any more movements until the police department arrived," he said.

It's not that unusual to hear gunshots from hunters and such (it's mostly woods and lake out here), but once we heard the sirens we walked that direction. Old reporter habits never die. Once I saw the sheer number of units responding, though, I briefly talked to a neighbor outside and went back home and locked the doors.

Also we have photos of him in a bullet proof vest where friends previously asked him “who you about to go kill” (though not recently)

Law enforcement confirmed Samson, a legal U.S. resident, brought two guns to the church Sunday. They said he immigrated from Sudan in 1996.

Police said that Burnette Chapel churchgoers recognized Samson as attending their church one to two years ago, but noted he hadn't attended services "in quite a while."
