The handgun is interesting and immediately stood out to me. You must be 18 to get an RPAL (handgun licence, basically) in Canada. However, there's been a
national freeze on the acquisition of handguns in Canada since October of 2022, which means the suspect was never old enough to legally acquire a handgun before the ban.
Therefore, there's two logical conclusions I can think of:
1) The gun was stolen
2) The gun belonged to someone they know
In a community that small and that rural, I'd be willing to bet it's the latter. I'm sure this will come out early in the investigation, if it isn't already known by LE.
