Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia: 10 confirmed dead, 25 injured in mass shooting (2/10/2026)

  • #61
I did not see this massacre in the news. That is terrible.

This is one of Canada's deadliest mass killing and school shooting. It is the deadliest school shooting since Montreal École Polytechnique Massacre in 1989.

See up thread #7, NS shooting was worse than polyT.

" 'We will get through this',

town mayor says.

Tumbler Ridge Mayor says
his main priority now is to make sure his community gets the support it needs.

Speaking to Canada's CBC Radio show,
he describes the community in Tumbler Ridge as 'one big family'.

He says health workers from other communities are coming to support local health workers,
in addition to mental health councillors.

The mayor adds
he's 'overwhelmed' by the support shown nationally and internationally.

'I think that will help the families here.
We will get through this'."

" 'Tumbler Ridge is the best of Canada' - PM.

Carney explains how Tumbler Ridge is a town of only 2,400 people,
and one of the youngest towns in British Columbia.

He says it's a town
of miners, teachers, conservation workers and families who've built their lives there.

'Tumbler Ridge represents the very best of Canada.
Resilient, compassionate and strong',
he tells Parliament."

This is all I have seen ... no real specifics on that yet.

Two firearms were recovered at the scene – a long gun and a modified handgun. Police are still working to determine their origins and role in the incident.

The suspect had a firearms license that had expired in 2024 and did not currently have any firearms registered to her.

The handgun is interesting and immediately stood out to me. You must be 18 to get an RPAL (handgun licence, basically) in Canada. However, there's been a national freeze on the acquisition of handguns in Canada since October of 2022, which means the suspect was never old enough to legally acquire a handgun before the ban.

Therefore, there's two logical conclusions I can think of:
1) The gun was stolen
2) The gun belonged to someone they know

In a community that small and that rural, I'd be willing to bet it's the latter. I'm sure this will come out early in the investigation, if it isn't already known by LE.

snipped from https://people.com/family-identifies-12-year-old-fatal-victim-canada-school-shooting-11905067
"One teacher and five students — three 12-year-old girls and two boys aged 12 and 13 years old — were found dead inside the school, according to a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) press conference.
One victim was found in a stairwell, said RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, adding that he believed the rest of the fatal victims were found dead in the library.
Two additional people, the shooter's mother and 11-year-old stepbrother, were discovered dead at the home."
11,12, 13 years old... babies. I'm so heartbroken for these poor children and all the kids at this school who are going to be haunted by this for the rest of their lives. Things like this shouldn't be happening in 2026. Also sounds like the total number of deceased has lowered to 9, it seems.

The actions of the young female who went to the neighbours probably saved several additional lives from being lost. Thankfully her life was spared and the neighbours were home. Sounds like a remarkable quick reponse by police. It’s always so heartbreaking why the desire for the shooter to destroy other innocent lives in situations such as this.
JMO

“A family member to the shooter told the neighbours about the initial killings, prompting a call to police.

“We were called because a neighbour – there was a young female at that home that went to the neighbour’s – and that’s how we learned there were two deceased at that residence,” RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said.

“The incident at the home occurred first, and from there our suspect attended the school and commenced their criminal activity there, and that’s how we learned there were two deceased at that residence,” McDonald added….

…..Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, commanding officer of the B.C. RCMP, said local Mounties arrived at the scene within two minutes to encounter “active gunfire” on the property.

“As officers approached the school, rounds were fired in their direction,” McDonald said at a news conference Wednesday.

“Officers entered the school to locate the threat. Within minutes, an individual confirmed to be the shooter was located deceased with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Community residents were told to stay inside and lock their doors for hours as authorities worked to confirm the threat had ended…. “

Moo.. my brother went to Sturgeon Creek High School. Winnipeg 1978. He befriended him, because the shooter was very emotionally, socially isolated...

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed>

Any firearms she possessed at the time would have been borrowed or stolen. She was a minor, which does not allow lawful acquisition or ownership. Someone allowed this person to have use of their guns, or at the very least did not realize this person stole their guns.

[Minors]
Allows
  • borrowing non-restricted firearms for approved purposes (for example, learning about the use of firearms, organized shooting competitions, hunting, or target practice)
  • purchasing ammunition (unless there is an age restriction under provincial or territorial law)

See up thread #7, NS shooting was worse than polyT.
There were more fatalities in 1989, but yesterday's shooting did have more victims.

The thing that's always gotten me about the 1989 shooting was that one of the police officers called to the scene showed up knowing that he might find his own daughter dead, and he did.

Purely speculation but yes, it’s possible the shooter stole the guns from the home. JMO

“Police had visited the family residence of the suspect in the deadly Tumbler Ridge shooting on numerous occasions before the attack that killed at least eight people and injured dozens.

“Some of the calls were related to mental health issues,” Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told a news conference on Wednesday.

Two firearms, a long gun and a modified handgun were recovered by responding officers, McDonald said.

“Police have attended that residence in the past, approximately a couple of years ago, where firearms were seized under the Criminal Code. I can say that at a later point in time, the lawful owner of those firearms petitioned for those firearms to be returned, and they were,” the deputy commissioner added…”

"The victims found in the suspect's family home were a 39-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy. The woman has been identified as Jennifer Strang, the mother of the suspect. It is believed the other victim was the step-brother of the suspect.

Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, the commanding officer for the RCMP in B.C., identified the suspect as Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18, of Tumbler Ridge. McDonald said police had responded to Van Rootselaar's home for mental health-related calls over the last several years. He said some of the calls dealt with weapons.
...

McDonald said Van Rootselaar identified as female but was assigned male at birth. McDonald said she began to transition about six years ago. The officer said police have not found any note yet from Van Rootselaar but it's possible one was written.

Hugs to you and your brother. My son was a 'collector of outcasts'. He tried to help those who were struggling. Sometimes it worked out well, and other times not. We all want to help those in need. I'm sorry that your brother's actions weren't 'enough' but he tried to be a good person. You can't ask for more than that.

Re mental health calls

I wonder if the perp was under the care of a psychiatrist??
I mean
was this person psychiatrically diagnosed and treated?

And what does it mean
this person dropped out of school at 14??
Does it mean this person was individually taught by school teachers?
Maybe online lessons?
(I ask as where I live education is compulsory till 18)

Hmmm.....
So many questions 🤔

I just heard on CBC TV that the family lived a somewhat nomadic existence as the suspect was growing up, living in various locations. There was an ex involved. The mother wanted to move to Newfoundland. Powell River, BC and I believe Alberta were also mentioned. Guns were in the home, as is often the case with mass shooters.

3D printer is also a possibility.

Home schooling is a possibility, but I haven't read anything beyond: the shooter dropped out of school at age 14. There were mental health issues, so perhaps there were struggles with learning. Hard to say, all speculation at this time.

Dropped out usually means quit school.
