Tuesday night, an advocacy group announced that Karmelo Anthony, the teen accused of fatally stabbing Frisco Memorial High School athlete Austin Metcalf during a track meet in early April, will get his diploma.

According to Next Generation Action Network, Anthony will not be allowed to participate in senior graduation activities. However, the organization said his 3.7 GPA and completion of all graduation requirements mean he can graduate without attending the final month and a half of the academic year.

I reserve the deepest sympathy for the victim and his family.

That said, this vulture is pretty much ensuring that a seventeen year old first time offender isn't going to get a fair trial, but a circus. There's no justice in that for anyone. And the only reason I can see for it is this individual is using this child as a platform for his own ego and, first and foremost, to make himself money.

Several items:

In the state I live in, if the incident (alleged crime) appears to be a felony, a grand jury must meet to return an indictment, “true bill” or state there’s not enough evidence to indict.

Granted, this is hind-site & old school & not knowing all the facts, but it seems like the prime time to understand/help KA would have been when he had the knife at school. I can’t help but think because he was a good student & athlete, he may have been given a break instead of help. Maybe the track incident wouldn’t have happened. Now he is being told he is an innocent party, who acted in self defense. It sounds like a bunch of mind games BY ADULTS to me. I don’t think this will end well for him either now or in the future.

Was school trying to show that the vid had no evidentiary value?
To show whom? MSM, the general public, Frisco parents & students, other district's parents & students? IDK.

I wonder if vid may be enhanced sufficiently to be of evidentiary value at trial.

One kid brings a knife to a track meet, the other does not.

IMHO, the law does not allow you to use lethal force on someone who just pushes you or even punches you.

The prosecution will show the one kid had some intent by (illegally) bringing a weapon to a track meet. He had it close by and therefore had at least thought of using it.

If it strictly from a legal standpoint, this one is pretty straightforward... murder or at least manslaughter.

I don't think anyone here disagrees. We don't need video proof of what happened. There were plenty of witnesses.

No reason to be carrying a weapon to HS sporting event except for bad ill intentioned ones. Period. He was there that day for one purpose and one purpose only. He sought out a confrontation and excuse to use the knife.

In multiple interviews with people like this that happened to bring weapons to regular events, they always say they were thinking about the weapon all the time while they were there. Fixating on it. So it makes sense you would instantly drag it out if any conflict arises.

This was the video released by the school district. I am interested in the numerous videos taken by spectators at the track meet. That may show something completely different, and possibly even audio of the conflict as well.

Unless the kid that was killed repeatedly punched the accused over and over (and his mug shot looks like he doesn't have a scratch on his body), this case seems pretty straightforward. The only question will be 1st degree or 2nd degree or manslaughter.

I would like to see more movement on this case, with hearings dates. I keep checking and have not seen anything.

Can't bring a knife to a (potential) fist fight. Touching someone does not give you any legal right to kill them. Even if he warned him, IMO doesn't fly in the court of law.

Especially in a weapon-free school zone.

Nobody wins in this scenario. The victim is dead with his family in mourning. The perpetrator will likely spend years in prison and ruin his chances for success in studies or sports. His family is under public hatred forever and they have lost their son to incarceration.

Young people... PLEASE THINK before you do something stupid like putting a lethal weapon in your gym bag.

One thing I noticed in the articles I’ve read, KA’s parents do not say AM’s name. Maybe it is only the articles I’ve read, but it seems dehumanizing to me.

So much has changed in athletics since my day. Kids that participated in athletics from other schools seemed to know each other & although competitive were somewhat friendly to each other. I remember parents complimenting kids on other teams if they did something truly amazing. I know some kids were on county All-Star teams & knew kids from other schools in the city or county.

Approaching and getting in the opponents tent was an act by itself of intimidation. The alleged suspect knew he had a knife in his gym bag and it looks like he was more or less egging them on and spurring a fight so he could use it.

Of course, I can be very opinionated and wonder if the shoe was on the other foot, if I would be so inclined to see it the same way. We've all seen behavior like that and I jsut hope I am not bias racially...which usually I am not.

But the gist of it was that the reporters could see no visible altercation beforehand at all.
Makes me wonder if Austin just mentioned that KA was under the wrong tent and KA decided he felt disrespected ?

The witness' testimony will be vital here.
Hoping KA will get first degree murder charges. I believe they're warranted.

Not sure exactly how you are responding. . . I think it was inappropriate for KA to be in another team’s space & I couldn’t see that happening in my day because of mutual respect.
